I though he showed his class. He did far more in the short time he was with us than just score a great goal for f**ks sake!
I just hope Smith gets a decent left back pretty soon (Sun?), because Frampton & the long haired one are just not good enough for us. |

Well he completed most of his passes, crossed the ball well, just defended soundly really, didn't really do a lot wrong, unlike that long haired tw*t we got from Boro who cannot seem to do owt right and has arse/elbow location difficulties.

I'd agree he was average at centre-half, but at left-back he was superb at this level, name me one better we've seen this season.
Surely you can't have forgotten his performance at Bolton where he dragged us, kicking and screaming, back into a game that was lost. At Wolves, he created no-end of problems going forward and was solid when we were under the cosh. |

So why didn't we sign him on a free transfer then?? Maybe we would have if he hadn't gone of to Turkey?

Plain and simple, he didn't want to move his family down south.
However, he was quite happy to move them back to Birmingham. It all seems a bit of a waste, since Villa fans are moaning about the signing. |

Plus I don't think that £30k a week would be fair on all the other players who slog their guts out every week and get considerably less, and SJ would surely baulk at that wage - big impact on budgets and cash flows!

Steve Staunton joins Villa (BBC)
From BBC Sport
Steve Staunton has rejoined Aston Villa from Liverpool on a free transfer, according to Liverpool's website. It is the Republic of Ireland defender's third move between the two clubs and comes after he was told he had no future at Anfield by boss Gérard Houllier. However, Aston Villa fans have not exactly welcomed Staunton back with open arms. Supporters claim the move represents a return to the Dad's Army-style recruitment of the Ron Atkinson era which chairman Doug Ellis had vowed would not be repeated. In the past six months Villa have brought in Luc Nilis (33), David Ginola (33) and now Staunton, who will be 32 next month. However, Independent Supporters' Association spokesman Jonathan Collett insisted that Staunton would be given a fair crack of the whip by fans despite the anger generated when he left Villa on a free transfer in 1998. Staunton was greeted with virulent abuse on first return to Villa Park. It is a backward step and it looks as if Villa are becoming a club again who sign old players Jonathan Collett, Villa Supporters' Association But Collett was adamant that the anger over the signing will not be directed at Staunton or manager John Gregory, who is desperate to bolster his small squad, but at Ellis. He said: "Two weeks ago Doug Ellis called a press conference in which he promised that Villa would be making high profile, state of the art signings in the near future. "Instead we are signing Steve Staunton on a free transfer. It is a backward step and it looks as if Villa are becoming a club again who sign old players. However, Villa boss Gregory took a completely opposite viewpoint. He said: "I believe that it represents good business." "Steve has massive experience and can cover a range of positions. He has one of the sweetest left foots in the game and he has a positive presence in the dressing room. "He knows that he will come back with the task of trying to force his way back into a very strong defensive unit and he is prepared for that challenge." Staunton, who has won more than 80 caps for his country, originally joined Villa from Liverpool in August 1991 when he was signed by the then manager Ron Atkinson for £1.5m. Staunton spent seven years at Villa Park He spent seven seasons with Villa, helping them to win the League Cup in 1994 and 1996, and was quickly established as a crowd favourite. He made 31 appearances in his first season back with Liverpool but since then has only had limited senior action. The 1999-2000 campaign saw him restricted to seven league starts and this season he has not featured at all in Houllier's first 11. Now Gregory, who has worked with Staunton before as one of Brian Little's coaching staff at Villa, has offered him a Premiership lifeline. |

To be honest I am not too disappointed with this.
Steve scored a fantastic goal for us the other week but on the whole looked very average in the games he played for us. Also -you have to remember that he was not too keen on moving to London. On top of that he was costing us at least 30k a week and is the wrong side of 30, I really don't think we should be looking to sign too many players of that age, and on that salary. Frampton and Harrison have both done well the past few games, and if we are looking to sign another left sided player I've already suggested several reasonable ones of a younger age and wage ! (just to prove they do exist ;0 ). Good luck to Steve at Villa - hope he gets the football he wants and thanks for helping out our younger players recently. |
