Open letter to the CM Community - by Oliver Collyer
August 7th, 2001 @ 12:25
Dear CM Fans,
I'm writing to tell you that, as from today, I am leaving Sports Interactive (the company I co-founded with my brother Paul many years ago) and will no longer be involved in writing Championship Manager.
Making CM has been pretty much an obsession since the mid-eighties, and I have devoted just about all of my adult life to making and improving this game. I have thrived on the feedback that many of you have given us over the years and I consider myself lucky to have been involved in what has been a hugely satisfying and unexpected adventure.
I certainly would never have considered for one moment that the game that Paul and I spent years writing in our bedroom, in a remote part of the Shropshire countryside, could end up capturing so much enthusiasm amongst so many football fans from around the world. I’m very glad – and proud – that it has.
Over the past year or so however, I’ve realised that I no longer get the same enjoyment out of writing the game; for me the halcyon days were probably when Paul and I were writing CM2 and the whole thing was a lot more personal. Although it’s been fun to work with such talented and enthusiastic people, being a smaller part of a bigger team just doesn’t give me the same creative satisfaction.
So, the time has come for me to move on and find new challenges in life and I felt it right that you, the people who have supported us over the years, should be the first outside the company to know. My immediate plans are to travel, to see (and learn about) some of the world. Beyond that, I have no idea what may happen. I do know, however, that I won't be writing any more computer games.
Rest assured that CM and Sports Interactive remain in good hands; we have assembled a wonderful team (largely comprising CM fans) who, under Paul’s guidance, are in the process of making CM4 better than any of the CM games to date, including the brilliant updates to CM3 (which I was not involved in). The future of CM couldn't be brighter.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who has bought a copy of the game or written to us about it over the years.
May you all continue to have enjoyable and successful careers in football management.
Cheers,
Ov Collyer
Hopefully Paul will keep it going for a long time to come! I cant imagine life without CM!!!!!!  |

Yep. Me too. I've always thought it was poo. Palace have 20 shots that hit the bar, stopped by the goalie, just gone wide, etc...
Macclesfield have one and... "Goal to Macclesfield!!""
Poo! |

'Palace have 20 shots that hit the bar, stopped by the goalie, just gone wide, etc...'
Realistic then! |

LADS! For some it is an institution, if you dont like it, dont post in the forum, dont just knock it for the simple reason that you can hit the bar a lot and not score. You cant expect it to be completely realistic ALL the time. After all, it is only a game, but a game played by many, and enjoyed by many.
:D |

The best game ever created could lose it's ID. I am sure ever since Eidos took over they have pushed things onto the brothers which they would not be happy with.
The talk of graphics on CM4 is not the brothers idea I am sure, this is to please the Eidos share holders to increase the market interest.
I hope this is not the start of the end of CM we know and love! |

Out of all the games I have ever played, the CM games are the only ones that I don't get bored of after a few weeks/ months. I just hope the new games will continue to be as good without Ov Collyer's involvement.
At least Paul Collyer will still be involved and I presume a lot of CM4 is already done by now - at least the design of the game anyway. |

| The birds eye view sounds SO much better than stupid fancy graphics that will just be repetitive and grate after a while. If they switch to the graphics I will be mad :grrr: |

Right, well as Ov has gone it means that the programmers and designers will take more control over the CM games, as they have been for a while actually. There will be more CM until people stop buying it, then it will cease.
Good luck to Ov though, it is his fault i have no life :) |
