This time of year is the most beautiful in Vermont. People from all over the country, and all over the world, come to see the show that we know as foliage season. We call these people leafpeepers and have to endure driving behind them while they drive through the state at 20mph, gazing at the hills. Foliage season is quite a show and this year is no exception.
mrgins
The sumacs are the first to change color, their leaves turning bright red while the clusters of bitter tasting berries stubborning hold on while changing to a deep red. The aspens are next, turning yellow, while the stars of the show, the maples, turn yellow and red and every hue in between. Sometimes the sugar maples and the red maples are so dazzling, they look like they're on fire. The oak trees turn golden and then brown and refuse to let go. We will have deep snow and the oak leaves will still maintain their grip on the branches.

Lake Champlain, briefly designated the sixth Great Lake for a two month period several years ago, seperates northern and central Vermont from New York state. The lake covers 500 square miles and provides recreation of one sort or another all year long. I live near the shores of the lake, which keeps my area cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, than inland areas. It also keeps the snowfall in our area less than the higher inland towns. Right now, there is a smattering of snow on the hills and it won't be long before the mountain passes are closed for the next six months. In January, the entire lake will freeze over, the ferries will shut down except for the shorter distance one which runs three ferries 24hours a day, and breaks the ice. The ice remains thick for at least four months, thick enough for trucks to drive across the lake. Many people take small sheds known as fishing shacksand park them on the lake all winter. They sit in these shacks with an appropriate supply of alcohol, drill a hole through the ice (which can be 2 to 5 feet thick) and drop a fishing line into the water. Not my idea of fun but a popular sport nonetheless.

Anyway, getting back to my very serious thread...Vermont's population is about 600,000 people, fewer than just about any other state. Many of the native Vermonters are of French Canadian descent. The indigenous native American tribe is the Abenakis or Abnakis (no one knows for sure as they had no written language) who just last year received state recognition as a tribe. The Abenakis are part of what is known as the northern woodlands tribes (as opposed to the plains indians etc.).

Never been in the autumn but springtime 4 years ago was beautiful. Burlington is a cool place I could live in and UVM is somewhere I'd send my girls to; if I could afford it.
Unfortuneately, for every Burlington there's a White River Junction!

Its about a group of snooty college kids, who study the Classics and murder people.

And the BBS connection is that one of the characters reminds me of Croydon Exile.

Unfortunately, this past week a female UVM student was abducted and murdered. They found her body yesterday. Very sad.

Today I have a team cookout (its 40F outside) and then a game this afternoon, in Milton. Out team will set a school record if we win this game and the next one. The towns around here are mostly named after English towns, Burlington, Essex, Milton, St Albans, except for Winooski which is an Indian name for Onion. The Onion or Winooski river runs through the town. Winooski, a blue collar town, was recently renovated and a roundabout installed to keep the traffic moving. Now traffic is backed up every day while people scratch their heads wondering whose turn it is to yield and who should enter their lane!

Vermont has many mountain ranges, in fact, Vermont means green mountains in french. The highest peak is Mount Mansfield at 4393', next is Camels Hump at 4083'. Before sophisticated instruments were manufactured, the taller of the two peaks were in question. The mystery was finally solved in true Yankee style when a hiker stood on the peak of Mansfield, lowered his musket to take aim at the peak of Camels Hump...and the bullet rolled out of the muzzle. I've hiked Camels hump but only driven to the top of Mansfield. The mountains are heavily wooded but the peaks are above the tree line. Hikers are warned not to step on even a blade of grass on either peak, as it takes decades to grow under such adverse conditions. Mount Mansfield has the Stowe ski area on the southern slope and Smugglers Notch ski area on the north slope. It boasts some of the finest ski trails east of the Mississippi.

Vermonts mountains at one time were the highest in the world, at over 30,000 feet. Over the ages, erosion reduced their size dramatically. Lake Champlain used to be a sea at one time.

the birds are heading south. Thousands of ducks and geese have been flying overhead. The snow geese from Canada can fly 100miles without stopping. Over here, you'll never see a robin on a xmas card as they too fly south. Much too cold and snowy for them
