Must say my goodbyes now as I'm off soon. A few pre match aperitifs are called for. I know you lot aren't at all excited by tonight as the rivalry is just so one sided; but we are buzzing about tonight. Enjoy and behave.

I must take umbrage with this ‘yawn’ comment Helmut.

If you are to remain as rivals to Crystal Palace then the comment ‘5 nil’ is to be kept as a weapon for every Palace fan when encountering a fan of Br*ght*n whenever and wherever they are.

Sure, intellectual and stimulating debate, or the occasional physical assault is preferable when conversing with one of you South Coast pub team supporters and indeed it takes more time, effort and energy, even wit, but when those opportunities are exhausted, then any Palace fan has the comfort blanket of the ‘5 nil’ comment.

Your surge up the divisions and long awaiting fixture against us on the 28th of October 2002 turned out to be wonderful day for those of us of a red and blue persuasion. The hilarious score line will live long in the memory of the supporters there that day. The 13 year wait was so long that some younger fans of both clubs knew nothing of the rivalry between us and what an introduction they were given.

Your subsequent fall from grace and continuing struggle in the lower reaches of the 3rd tier of football has seen your star fallen again from Palace supporters. You’re becoming a mildly amusing annoyance, a pesky little tyke whose only reputation in the game seems to be your hatred for the Palace. It was how we viewed Charlton for so many years but our recent clashes with them have seen the younger Palace fans make them the focus of their ire. Don’t let them take your place on our mantelpiece of hate as they just don’t do it for the older Palace support.

If I ever encounter a Seaweed on my travels I often have no call for a stop and chat, a reminisce of how football was or should be, or discuss the merits of players who’ve represented us both. I spy a br*ght*n shirt, or hat etc and upon passing this person/s I will say “5 nil” and continue on my way. If I’m lucky I’ll hear ‘Palace scum’ shouted back at me as I continue on my way and I smile. It is the most significant result between the two teams in recent history and more should be made of it.

Thanks for listening and 5 nil.

Thank you oh one to be feared. I bet you wrote twice as much for your History homework as other pupils did when you were at secondary school.

I don't go on about the 1-0 (11 against 11) at all, tis history and all. You can keep on about the 0-5 (10 against 11) or the 2-3 (10 against 11) if it pleases thee.

It's laughable to try and use the fact that you were down to 10 men as an excuse. Players getting sent off is part of football, and reflects the level to which we ran you ragged (certainley in the 5-0). It's like you are almost trying to say that your 1-0 win was superior to the 5-0 because we didn't have a man sent off. Only Brighton fans would stoop to using such embarassing excuses. :clown:

Why is that?

So in an unrelated example.

Defender gets sent-off for making a last ditch tackle in the first minute. Is that indicative of the attacking team running ragged the defending team? Really is it?

I do not honestly think we were being run ragged at the time that prune Brooker brought down the striker. We were playing shit mind but you were not running us ragged.

Of course I will get suitable retorts requesting that I have a tainted and biased view, but do you honestly think that you would have won 5-0 had we kept 11 men on the pitch?

I usually think your posts are well balanced and fair so come on pal, think about it.

Why only Brighton fans do such stooping. I am sure that Heerenveen, Exeter City and even Billingsgate Dynamos would proffer such a rationale given the substantive circumstance.

I thank you.

It's a pathetic excuse. We mullered you that day and the sending off was a symptom of that. What will you try and say next? That the true score was 3-0 because 2 of the goals were penalties?

Lets be honest when you beat us 1-0 at Selhurst we actually had a perfectly good Clinton Morrison goal chalked off at the death, yet did you hear Palace fans going on about how you shouldn't of won? No. We admitted that you deserved the victory.

You're bad losers.

True that.
After the 1-0 there was a 'Congratulations Brighton' thread on here very quickly, but apart from dougdeep it took ages for any such posts from Brighton fans after the 3-2. There were lots of excuses and complaints though.
Even Seagullette had a great big whinge first.

I wasnt a member of this forum then.
The 5-0 game ; we were played of the park.
The 0-1 (mcshane) was fully desrved.
2-3 (mcanuf or what ever his name was)was deserved on play even though it was in the 90th minute!

At the end of the day the result is what matters, in fact winning completely undeservedly against your rivals as we did at the Withdean last time for example is actually very enjoyable. Thank you for at least not embarassing yourself and admitting that the 5-0 was a comprehensive tonking for yourselves. Sometine you just have to hold your hands up and admit that you got done, like we have to Charlton fans on here.

In fairness I think most of our anger was directed at the manager and team for that pathetic excuse of a performance that evening. Of course Palace being Palace we then beat Liverpool a week later.

So its Ok for you to nominate a 'perfectly good goal'. I am not doubting the victory just putting forward a viewpoint about the number of goals as a factor of the number of players (I use that word lightly) we had on the pitch. That is all.

As you know I endeavour to keep my posts light hearted to the point of nonsensical. I will leave matters as they are rather than keep on an issue which we will not agree on, on the basis that I am saying as I am a bad loser. .

No worries, I respect you as a good poster Helmut. I just think that in football 5-0 is 5-0, sending offs etc don't come into it. That's the game in all it's cruel glory. England is the same, we can all talk about Sol Campbell goals being disallowed or controversial sendings off but the fact is that when it came down to it we lost. I was using the Clinton goal as an example because you totally deserved to beat us that night btw.
