On the back of the successful IPL the ECB don't want to miss the boat clearly and a revamp appears to be on the cards of our own Twenty20 competition. They are in discussions Sir Allen Stanford to get it going by 2010 at the latest ..
But I say, what is wrong with the competition we have started here? It has taken the cricket season by storm since it started so why change a winning formula? It seems to be that money is the significant factor once again but will it be good for cricket in general in this country or not? I'm not that sure at this point ...

| As much as I hate the way football is going, some sort of Premier league cricket thing would be a good thing for the game imo. Cricket just needs a few more fans. |

| 18 teams is too many so I'd like to see a "franchise" type league but only for T20 |

Agree with that Saxon. If they had 8 or 10 teams split into two groups but having to play everyone else then that would produce some money for the County players as well.
Imagine a team with Ali Brown, Symonds, Trescothick, Jayasuriya etc etc. There would be some huge scores. But what would happen with Kolpak rules for this.
The franchises could be for London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester. I bet some of the football team owners get in on the act. |

See Cricinfo - it will be based on the current county system according to that - London, South, Wales & West, East Mids, West Mids and North. |

Surrey, Middlesex and Essex. Now that would be an interesting combination.
Kent, Hampshire and Sussex would be a big team as well. |

Joyce, Strauss and Shah from Middlesex. Cant see Strauss playing in a T20 competition although his innings the other day was brilliant vs Surrey.
Pettini, Bopara, Cook, Foster and Tudor from Essex.
How many overseas players for each team are allowed |

Ramps and Butch would have a payday for Surrey as well now I think about it. Then Benning, Brown, Jordan, Saqlain and Newman as well. I think you might have guessed that I know more about Surrey then other teams :)
There would be a lot of youngsters that would like to be involved in it as well. Laurie Evans from Surrey for one. |

| I'm really glad the ECB are putting together a rival competition, but something about this all doesn't feel right. Billionaires money bankrolling it then taking away the county names which in turn will weaken them. Players might find it a little confusing as well, potentially they could end up playing for 3 sides in a season - county, international and Twenty20. |

| They would have to hold the county game while this is taking place surely? And I'm not keen of moving away from the county names ... |

| What is the point in having 5 outstanding world class batsman if maybe only 3 get a bat? There should be a limit to the number of balls a batsman can face ie 30? |

I think this will be a good idea. I dont think that the county names will be taken away. It wouldnt be allowed by the ECB. It will be in addition to rather than against it. It will be more IPL than ICL.
The only problem is that it may cause problems within Counties. An example would be if Benning got 100k from Whoever sponsors him and Newman got 75k. Who would say that he is worth 25k less than Benno for example. |

Just not cricket I'm afraid. If someone's in for longer than 30 balls they'll either be doing a good job or otherwise they are causing their own team trouble in the long run. |

One thing i'm certain I agree with Stanford about is that as Twenty20 grows it'll be the 50 over game that gives way and the first class/Test will continue as the mainstay.
Unfortunately the Indians don't seem to agree with the schedule for our tour having 2 tests and 7 one dayers. |

Why? That's what is happening in India now - in fact, it is very funny to watch players being whistled at on their home grounds while Aussies and Pakistanis are being cheered! Usually, the Indians wouldn't dare do that to one of their heroes but it shows how the fans have really got into this. |

Because India are doing it doesn't mean that the ECB have to do it. Personally I feel they need to develop a Twenty20 tournament to rival the IPL that, like now, allows every county to enter - creating 6 new teams could potentially destroy the whole system. |

| I can't see it lasting any length of time. Having been up late enough to watch a bit of the IPL the thing which has struck me most about the game is that it is so one-paced. There's no subtlety and no ebb and flow to the game which quickly makes it tedious. If County matches are the staple food of cricket then T20 is the chocolate dessert - very enjoyable in small doses but rather sickening when eaten with any frequency. |

| I did a thread on here about 18 months ago saying that I'd like to see all cricket in england franchised. 7 teams playing 6 five day matches, and 12 one day and 20/20 games. teams/squads picked by draft. it would bring in more money, be better for the fans and help improve the english international team. |
