I've only just noticed that ITV4 show `The Big Match revisited` every week, roughly 25 years after the transmission date.
I appreciate we were truly awful at this time, but as I was only 7 my memories of this era are a bit sketchy.
Can anyone remember us being on this programme at all during these dark days? |

From that particular season 82-83, our home match verses Leeds ( 1-1 ) was on the Big Match but that was in the early part of the season, when we hit the heights of mid table in Division 2.
I think Match of the Day covered both our matches against Wolves that season & the cup tie at home to Burnley. |

We were on it loads.
I just wish the re-runs would include games from the 70s. |

Sadly no more. He died in 2001.
I can remember seeing him and Jimmy Hill pre-match in the old supporters clubhouse behind the main stand. |

| It is a painful fact that we NEVER beat another London club on "The Big Match" until we beat Chelsea in 1973. |

| The Burnley 1992-83 cup match was MOTD (as was the Wolves 3-4). Both crap. |

Edited for additional accuracy - in our 32nd League encounter against London opposition in the top flight. |

Died on Sep 11 2001 - that's probably why a lot of people don't remember it happening. |

:D
BBD directed me to this the other week.
Glorious stuff - the only bit of Palace on there was a a brief comment about our 2-1 win at Carlisle with a brief picture of Mullery :hmph: :hmph: and Ally Brown (in a WBA top) who had scored the winner :( |

Edited for mischief quality.
Top list Jofon - it shows there's still a lot out there. Even though I consider '83 to be relatively recent times  there's a huge nostalgia value about The BMII. Watford were on it most weeks AND their football's hardly changed.
Love seeing it for the packed terraces, less continental but highly entertaining football and the quaint round ups of 'other' London teams with maybe a picture from a Sunday paper if you were VERY lucky. :bash: |

That Palace performance should be on a 'How to play beautiful football away from home, make your opponents look stupid and win 3-0' DVD.
Or was it the one year later?
I may have to get my Big Match - Palace video out again later.

The moderators can be a wee bit pernickety about posting YouTube coverage here, but this should be OK seeing as it looks like it was probably created by pointing a video camera at a TV screen (which explains the abysmal quality) and is over 30 years old now.
It shows the above match which finished as a 2-0 win for Palace. Amusing to watch George Graham getting sent off for nobbling Howard Kendall; it was his first match back from a suspension for getting sent-off a couple of weeks earlier which was a pretty good effort. Highlight of the footage is a superb 25 yard half-volley by Steve Perrin; hardly ever mentioned in lists of great televised Palace goals, but its a beauty.
Great to hear veteran ITV commentator Hugh "one-nil" Johns again ... "yes indeed; it's two-nothing Palace !" Anyway, it makes interesting viewing for those of us that recall it.
