scanning some old newspapers reports from the palace youth cup winning side . A couple of names stand out

Stephen Leahy is one , hes mentioned in a lot of reports so he must have been half decent , in a swquad of Fry , Ransom , Dare, Gilbert , Brennan,Murphy,Walsh,Hilaire ,Nicholas, Fenwick and all I have never heard of him .

Did he ever make it into the first team ?
Psychokiller
I was only young at the time but I distinctly remember both he and Les Carter being awful and getting a proper slagging off from my Dad.

For some reason I picture Leahy as one of those white blokes with afro hair. Am I right?

I'll ask K Dare tomorrow if he ever kept contact
ian king
Made a handful of first team appearances between August 1980 and October 1981. Yes he sported one of those 'big hair' styles
of the time (got a pic of him somewhere).
TenEmBee
I remember him playing against Doncaster in the league cup, 81/82 season. True he was awful, didnt help with some oaf continuing to bait him every time he gained possesion of the ball.
tony 1947
Stephen Leahy went to Dartford March 1982. After that no idea

I don't know why PK, but that really made me laugh. I've never met your Dad in my life, but from the very little that you post about him,I reckon he must be a great bloke.:p

He is. And lifelong Palace :p

Your story about your Dad and John Lacy still makes me chuckle everytime :p

Leahy came on as a sub in the 5-2 mauling of Middlesbrough early in the record-breaking 80/81 season. I think they were our only points in the first 7 games or something. He was awful, kept falling over the ball, and I can indeed confirm that he sported a rather resplendent "white man's afro". Clive Allen scored a hat-trick in that game by the way.

what was the line up?

Normally when discussing Palace's worst ever players ,I usually make it a condition that they have to have played at least 20 games oyhrtwise you can mentio some real terrible players.

If this condition however didn't apply Leahy would be right up ther with the best e.g.Per Bartram , Borge Thorup, Les Carter that left back on loan from Ipswhich etc

Thorup made only one substitute appearance. Bert Head, (a bit like you:D ) clearly wasn't going to give him the benefit of the doubt!

Bartram scored twice in 9 games. I saw the one he squeezed past Gordon Banks running full pelt to slot in a cross field John Sewell free kick.:lux:

Definite re Steve Brennan, not sure [though sure someone will know] but I think it is Chris Sparks front left. What I do know is that 11 of the 12 in that picture all played for the first team; that must be some sort of record for a FA Youth Cup winning team. 6 of them became full internationals & 2 more surely would have if the team of the 80's had developed to its full potential.

Thought K Dare was part of that team

I sometimes get the two teams confused. There were slight diffences because of age. So Kenny Sansom, for instance was involved in 1976/77 team but not in 1977/78. Kevin Dare may have been just involved in the latter.

Programme photo was by Keith Payne, obviously taken after the 76/77 Youth cup final game against Everton. And this ties in with tony1947's line-up:

Just confirmed from this thread from last year.

Ian Hart writes:

I think you'll find the full backs in the first victory were Peter Ransom and Kenny Sansom. Both of these were too old by the following season, but Fenwick still wasn't switched to full back. I think the full backs the second time were Chris Sparks and Kevin Dare.

Yeah you must be right, as Kevin replaced Kenny at left back, K Dare was probably a member of the youth team squad and came in when Kenny went into the full team
tony 1947
His name was Peter Ransom. The first leg team was:Fry, Sansom, Dare,Fenwick, Gilbert, Nicholas, Brennan, Lovell, Walsh, Hilaire, Leahy.
sub Murphy. Played at Everton 5 May 1977
We retained the cup the following year. It was a one off game played
At Highbury April 27 1978 v Aston Villa, again 1-0 again Fenwick scored. Team was: Fry,Sparkes, Dare,Fenwick, Gilbert, Nicholas,Carter,Murphy, Lovell, McKenzie,Hilaire. sub Banfield.
That is possibly why Dare and Sparkes were remembered. Interesting to note that Fenwick scored for QPR in the 1982 Cup Final

There was a Peter Ransom knocking about in the Sussex County League back in the 90s. Played as full-back too, for East Grinstead and Ringmer amongst others. Presumably the same fella? He would have been a similar age to King Kenny.
tony 1947
I think you are right. Peter Ransom is now helping the youth team at Three Bridges, which is in the same area.
