Wonder how many Palace fans will recall Jimmy Guthrie, who we
signed from Portsmouth in 1947, where he had the distinction of
captaining the only Pompey FA Cup-winning side that beat hot-
favourites Wolves 4-1 in the Wembley Final of 1939?
Remember him as a neat, constructive wing-half, who had clearly
left what pace he used to have at Fratton Park, which explains
why he made only 5 League appearances in Palace colours,
before he moved on to become a respected Chairman of the
