Went a couple of years ago. As a non-racing person it opened my eyes.
As far removed from the "Sport of Kings" as it's possible to get. |

Unlikely to make it this year as I didn't realise it was so early.
We've had some cracking days at the Derby, Wednesday or Saturday. |

We live about half a mile from the course and it's really awful on the Friday and Saturday.
I'll be spending it in, painting the fence, or the like, while my youngest will be running his lemonade stall outside  |
|
|

Lemonade stall :D
I always used to go when my parents and my dads best friend used to have a beer tent and everything setup and loads of people we knew came with a BBQ and that.
But my dads friend and my godfather died at the age of 40 a few years back (2002) and I havent enjoyed it since then. |

Bolger has finally declared New Approach - despite his constant denials he would run. 6/1 I think - he'll probably be my bet as he looked more of a stayer than a miler in the two Oaks
I've gone to the Derby most years - it is chavvy but if the weather's good its still a decent "free" day out, trains from EC are quick, not too crowded an hour before the first race and well organised at the other end on the way back, service in the beer tent on the Hill is remarkably quick usually - once you know where the toilets with the shortest queues are its pretty much hassle free.... (i'm not telling!) |

Sod the sun - the one time it tipped down was the one time I backed the winner (Oath in 1999)
Used to love my Derby Days in the '90s. That said, given my different outlook towards drinking and drunks these days I guess I wouldn't enjoy it much if I went now. |

I remember the 99 one, that was my tip :D. It was my communion the next day which is the main reason I remember it.
Always been good at tippin horses for some reason, I think I chose the Oaks winner that year as well.
I'm 7 from 11 so far at the Derby :D |

the year that annoyed me the most was when horatio nelson? with keiron fallon on board died during the race despite it being known that he was already injured.
One of only a few years where I have lost :( |
|
|
| palace & proud |
Epsom clerk of the course Andrew Cooper believes the worst of the rain has passed and is expecting a largely dry week in the build-up to the Derby meeting.
However, after more rain the going has eased further and is reported to be soft, good to soft in places.
Cooper said: "We had 10 millimetres of rain overnight and earlier this morning (Tuesday). It is still overcast and we are getting light drizzle, but it is forecast to move out to the east and we are not anticipating much more rain for later in the week."
He added: "There is a chance we may get a shower or two, but nothing major and the ground at the moment is probably as soft as it is going to get. ---> perfect for New Approach :p |

Epsom going now good to soft
New Approach :lux:  :p
EPSOM dried out to good to soft on Wednesday and officials expect the Classic course to quicken even further ahead of Saturday's Vodafone Derby - even though further rain is forecast to fall on Friday.
Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper changed his ground description on Wednesday from soft, good to soft in places, and issued a GoingStick reading of 6.8.
Cooper said: "It has been a warm, sunny day, a bit breezy at times, with temperatures in the low 20s.
"It is no surprise we are drying out and it's easy to forget just how quickly this place settles down."After walking the track, I didn't have much hesitation in describing the ground as good to soft. There is still ground that's onthe slower side, but there are also bits that are almost good.
"I would be reasonably confident that we will go into Friday on ground that is on the slow side of good.
“Where we end up on Saturday depends on what happens on Friday, as the forecastis for us to get some light and patchy rain at some point, totalling 2mm to 5mm.
"If that comes, it should be enough to hold the ground wherever it is at that stage. There are no plans to water." |
|
|

Ive backed Kandahar run at 18's
Followed a quite similar path to that of Oath alos trained y henry Cecil when he won it back it 99 i think. Will go on any ground, should travel well enough and its a nice price.

Can't do the Derby this year as at a wedding. Thought about doing the oaks (first time) but don't think I'll be going now.
BTW - the grandstand is no-where near finished. I'm sure it was supposed to be. I've been saying for weeks that it wouldn't be ready in time! |
|

I think it was never going to be finished and that from the outset there were going to be less tickets than usual, pretty sure that's what someone said last year anyway.
Can't wait :lux: |

Will be there both days as myself and a couple of pals run a book in Tatts which we have been doing for the past 5 years.
From a bookmakers persepctive I think the winner will come from one of these three: Casual Conquest, Tartan Bearer or Tajaaweed.
Casual Conquest has the most likely improvement to make up into a top class horse. A pal of mine saw him win the trial at Leopardstown and thought he looked an exceptional horse. Only reservation is his huge frame which may not be suitable for coming down the hill and round Tattenham Corner.
Tartan Bearer is following the same path as his trainers previous winner (North Light), winner of the Dante and only run in a couple of maidens as a 2 year old. Gradually being stepped up in class rather than the highly tried 2yo career that used to be popular. Has the best jockey riding (Ryan Moore), will be suited by softer going and will certainly stay 12 furlongs.
Tajaweed won well at Chester last time given a good ride by his much maligned jockey (R. Hills). Keiron Fallon who rides out for the trainer has said that he prefers this horse of the 3 Stoute runners.
Of the others......
New Approach will not stay the 12 furlongs (look at the dams previous sons and daughters) and will also struggle with the noise and general atmosphere of Epsom. He is very highly strung and can see him boiling over in the prelims.
Curtain Call looks more of a St Leger horse and as such expect him to be beaten for a turn of foot duing the last 2 furlongs.
Aidan O'Brien / Johnny Murtagh has done us bookies a favour by indicating his best chance is King Of Rome, a former pacemaker for his better thought of horse. This means we can discount all 5 of Aidan's.
Of the remainder Kandahar Run looks the only one who may run into a place.
If you go to Epsom enjoy the day out and hopefully win a few quid but not from us!!! |
|

Correct!
I don't have any tips I'm afraid ADE, but I did read in the paper this week that Tajaaweed had seasoned watchers 'gasping' and 'running for the nearest bookie' after a piece of work on the gallops.
If you can get 9/1 put £5,000 on (after downing a bottle of Smirnoff first, obviously) |

I was put off by New Approach when looking on this thread, I blame you all :D
Although tbh, I would have backed Casual Conquest anyway.
If I had my wallet nearby I could name mine as I have all the losing slips in there still.
If I remember rightly though I had:
1.40 Conduit which was 6/4 when I got it
2.10 Smokey Storm which was 2/1
2.40 Jamboretta which was 6s
3.15 Strike up the Band or Safari Mischief and I managed to choose SutB, idiot. As the e.w choices.
4.00 Casual Conquest £5 win, and Tajaaweed £2.50 e.w 3rd and 8th respectively.
4.45 Bandama which I had 9/2 win. Lost by a head :(
5.20 Done the usual mistake of backing 2 horses. Gift Horse 7/2 £5 win and Idle Power 12/1 £2.50 e.w, when IdlePower was miles ahead I thought the luck was in but oh no when does anything ever work out for me.
So I didnt do too badly looking at it.
2 winners, a 2nd, 2 3rds 5th, 2 7ths and an 8th.
From my limited view on the hill I couldnt see too much of the racing on the screen although I could see from 1st Furlong to 5th Furlong.
So,
Did Casual Conquest get blocked in through bad riding which is why it only seemed to move way too late.
Same with Bandama, it looked like my Dads horse blocked and slowed right in its path which caused an argument :D
I was sort of brought back to earth with a bump after spending 20 mins winding the family up with Worlds best Tipster comments and then having 7 non-winning horses |

New Approach was always going to be suited by further than a mile, he's come up short for pace over a mile twice, and if you look back through his form as a 2YO, he was always a battler with not much speed, so 1M 4F in wet conditions would have been his forte, also not much opposition to him to be fair, there's not been an outstanding 3YO female or male to get excited about. Fair play calling the other two though. |

Just wondering but how much of a hammering did the bookies take on the other races, as the first 2 were won by the favourite so it must have looked pretty bad at that point. |

How could you have got hammered at Lingfield?! I went tonight and a 66/1, 20/1, 33/1 aswell as an odds on fav couldnt have cost you that much?! I think the last race will have been very well backed although it did drift out at one point when Prince Of Delphi was backed in.
What name do you trade under?
Btw you must have backed Borrowdale back after laying it ?!?! I heard a few palace fans backing it purely for the name! |

£20 on the winner of Derby at 5.2/1 on Betfair,£5 on winner of race 4 at 8/1 and £5 on winner of first at 6/4, £10 down on the other two races so not a bad day out - we left after the Derby as the Hill was getting really crowded and very hot.
Also they had place a huge Household Cavalry marquee and compound slap bang in the middle of the hill which caused a lot of crowding and made finding a spot where you could see a decent amount of the course and a screen next to impossible. Ridiculous |

My mate missed the jackpot by one leg which was won by Soldier of Fortune, he put in the 5/4 fav rather than that which was 9/4, it paid £84k, he also missed the £540 placepot for the same horse, ok would have paid less had the fav been in there but probably not a lot less
My nap won, Little White Lie at 12/1 and also had Emirates Skyline at 4/1 so was well up on the day
Just watched the Derby, my horse was bashed all over the place by the winner, convinced it will pay to keep following Rio De La Plata |

Yep, the write up I read said that it lost all chance after those shenanigans. I have liked that horse ever since I saw its facile win at Glorious Goodwood last year and will keep following it too. |

Just wondering but how much of a hammering did the bookies take on the other races, as the first 2 were won by the favourite so it must have looked pretty bad at that point.
The first race was a bad result for most bookmakers with Conduit winning. Ladbrokes were making sure the price was as short as possible by backing it in the ring. This ripples down the line as most firms would then hedge by backing back with other firms and thus causing the price to contract. Ladbrokes would keep backing it until they are sure the SP will be the price they want to return in their shops.
For us Conduit was an opportunity to try and get off to a good start as the form and ratings had Midships and Tajweed quite close together. If you get a good few quid on the first race it allows you to then be a bit more aggressive in the later races with your odds.
We had Conduit losing us our maximum amount as we felt the true price was 2-1. As it turned out Conduit was most impressive and had improved vastly from its previous run.
The second race would have been ok for most bookies as although the favourite won it drifted from 5/2 out to 4/1 at the off. We took most money for Indian Art, Fivefootnumberone and Our Wee Girl against the favourite. So it actually ended up being a winning race for us.
We won small on the next 2 races but the amount bet was paltry. Then on the Derby we had the front 3 as losers (a shade of odds on when coupled) hoping for a result!!!! New Approach was one of our losers.
Because of the crowd limit of 5,000 in the Grandstand business was not very good with 57 bookmakers playing. There were only 39 on Oaks day. So what business there was spread thinly. It is strange but the amount bet per ticket is always higher on Oaks day than Derby day. Another factor is money is tight with the economic downturn plus touts charging £80 for a £32 ticket for the grandstand. Hopefully the new granstand will be open and ready for next years race and the crowds will return. |

Overall 4 favourites won out of 6 races. The 66/1 deadheated with the 10/11 favourite in the first. You pay half the odds to the original stake so in effect people backing the favourite get there money back and the 66/1 pays out at 33/1. Race was only a small winner.
Yes Borrowdale and Foxtrot Alpha were both good results although the places were bad on Borrowdale race with many punters backing names (Millie and Sam). If we get liabilities on the outsiders we always back them back usually via Betfair/Betdaq to enhance the value in the book, if we need cash we will do it on course but it can be a struggle to get on each way for trade bets.
Odds on Navajo Joe race was not good as again the 2nd was a bad each way horse for us. The last 2 races went to 2/1 and 3/1 favourites with all the placed horses being well backed each way as well.
The business at Lingfield on Saturday night was far better than Epsom in the afternoon and our turnover was more than double that of Epsom. |
