From our webhosts

Dear Customer,

This evening at 4:55 pm CDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.

We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.

This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.

The DNS was also affected by this. We are working to correct this but it will take a few more hours. Please look for more updates on this situation at forums.theplanet.com.

Thank you for choosing The Planet!

How do i do that on firefox? Can connect on my phone but not the laptop
Dave
f you are using Windows, use "Start", "Find", "Files and Folders" to find a file in your windows directory (or WINNT\system32\drivers\etc) called "hosts".

edit that in notepad

Good to be back!

Odd both cpfc.org and Homlesdale.net were/are out at the same time.

I was beginning to think it was sabotage!

I'm having to go through SmartHide to get to the BBS. My ISP DNS is still reporting that cpfc.org is unresolved.

A cold Guinness is yours one day…
Dave
Thanks dude.

I think I must be getting older, I was a lot less freaked out this time by the downtime than ever before.

Sadly this also means that the server we are moving to on Friday will be temporary as I am going to look at colocating our own servers here in the UK. Other people can't be trusted.

For some reason I can not get on the BBS unless I go through www.vtunnel.com

Is this because of the problems or is everything sorted out now?
Dave
It's sorted but the fix is taking a while to propagate

Thanks for the hard work Dave. On the upside, instead of BBSing I went and attacked the jungle that my garden has become. Found 9 red ant nests

I presume that this was it:

quote:
ThePlanet based in Dallas Texas, suffered a major setback yesterday as an electrical fire allegedly caused an explosion, knocking out around 9000 of their customers hosted websites.

Marcus Langenveld writes: "Apparently there was an electrical fire at ThePlanet’s H1 data center in Houston Texas. According to some sources there was an actual explosion powerful enough that it knocked down walls in an equipment room. So far there are no reports of damage to servers or networking equipment but power is offline at the facility and approximately 9000 websites are affected. This will surely be all over the tech news websites by morning.

'Someone flicked the wrong switch, and we're now shitting ourselves that we've lost loads of data and are consistency checking around the clock... but we couldn't tell customers that. Explosion sounds much better - even if it was only in our pants.'

Janet could get it on IE and not on firefox on my laptop. We wondered if it was to do with the fact that we were logged in on firefox (and IE in my case) but not the other browsers?
Dave
The browser caches the dns

It's better that you don't ask, because we won't understand the answer.

If it's any consolation my wife is on the Donny.Com site all the time and that is still down, they haven't got a Dave at hand.
