but we certainly didn't get to the cup final until about 11 months later

remember blackburn away - how we got away without being beaten 9-1 is a miracle - thank god for howard gayle's inability from the penlaty spot

no , but everyone says that it always hard for the team that comes up from the play off finals to do well and get players in , our season ended June 3rd .
The following season we got to the fa cup final and was way clear of any relegation fight , must clubs now are fighting relegation let alone going on a fa cup run .

Yes, but we were dire at the start of that season (9-0 at Anfield).
Was only when Sir Steve got the chequebook out in November ( Nige, Thorn, Ninja) that we picked up. No transfer window to worry about then. Now if you don't buy well in the summer, no one decent will join in Jan if you're down the bottom of the league.

And agree.

We didn't actually sign anyone until the week before the season started when we bought Andy Gray and Mark Dennis.

It was only after buying Nige and Thorny, coupled with Johnny Salad and Richard Shaw coming back from loan spells with Swansea and Hull respectively as stronger players, did our squad really improve.

Jeff Hopkins getting an injury in January, however sad, probably helped as well.

Bloody hell, I remember it as if it were yesterday.

I almost passed out when Wrighty scored the 3rd.

There with my dear old Dad (RIP)

Went for a quiet drink with him and Paul Rodger in the Parchmore after.

Then we made our way down to Fornton Eef (or Tornton Heat if you prefer) to see a Palace fan being paraded around aloft in an armchair nicked from the pub on the corner of Whitehorse Lane, whose name always escapes me.

True, we were hopeless in the game up at Ewood and didn't start playing till about last five minutes. Then Hoppo got up superbly to a header (and very bravely) which dropped to Eddie to prod in. There we were, all happy thinking 2-1 is great away after this. Then they went straight down the other end and went 3-1 up.....such typical Palace!

Was really blue travelling back, especially when we saw a bunch of the team at a service cafe looking equally crushed.

Coppell did a stunning job inspiring those players over the next few days to turn over that deficit against a good team.
ReadingPalace
I think it was much easier to stay up in those days. I remember a mate of mine betting me £50 that we'd go down after the 9-0 mauling at Anfield. I was very quick to take him up on it as, even then, I had confidence that we'd be OK.
I'm still waiting for him to cough up, by the way.
These days in the top division, you don't need to be rubbish to get relegated but it helps (eh, Derby?).
CP Satellite
There were some great memories from that game. The Blackburn fans stuck in the far corner of the Holmesdale, all looking up and pointing to the Concorde that used to overfly Selhurst - as if it was a good omen!

Perry Suckling's wonder save from Simon Garner. Dave The Mod Madden scoring that penalty after Eddie McGoldrick did his Charlie Chaplin drunk routine in the Blackburn area. The crowd incircling the pitch before the end of extra time. They had some real bruisers in the Rovers side as well, Howard Gayle and Colin Hendry spring to mind!

I will always remember the Rovers fans waving us off after losing at Ewood Park, but their was an air of confidence amongst alot of Palace fans - I'm pretty sure I can remember somebody putting up a poster somwhere near the old Club Shop that Palace would win 3-0 in the home leg a few days before the game!

I still can't figure out whether the penalty was for the tackle on McGoldrick or the following one on Bright.

I missed it live cos I will getting a burger. I was quite relieved it was just a penalty, having missed one of the goals against Swindon for the same reason!

I've recanted my memories of that day many times on here before. I was 15 at the time. One thing I remember is the air of optimism around the place. We shouldn't have really expected to overturn a 1-3 deficit but from my memory pretty much everyone in the red and blue ends of Selhurst knew we would win. This was back in the day when you could fit 30,000 in Selhurst and when you EXPECTED to be allowed to run on the pitch after the last game of the season. I was at the front of the Sainsburys end that day - who else had a restricted view from the edge of the pitch and thought the ref had blown for full time when Wrighty's goal went in and everyone invaded the pitch? :D
cantspell
Great day. In the Arthur for the match. I just thought we would win - 30,000 at selhurst well we re going to give it a go.
Away Day Eagle
Indeed there were two pitch invasions.

As you correctly say the first, when Wright scored at the Sainsbury's end, we thought the ref had just blown for full time. People were literally on the touchline by the time the pitch was cleared and the actual FT whistle went.

You're quite right in what you say that we 'knew' we'd overturn the 1-3 defecit. It wasn't arrogance. I can't quite describe it. I suspect we knew we'd got lucky up there and our home form was good that year (only two defeats IIRC, Bournemouth and ??? )

Swindon in the Semi-Final was the same. The atmospheres were amazing on both occassions.

Happy Days

Agree how we were totally outplayed at Ewood Park yet had little doubt we would do enough in the second leg. What a bloody fantastic day. After half a dozen or so trips to the likes of Grimsby, Shrewsbury and Barnsley we had a few new grounds to go to.

My Mum (RIP) sent me the video of the game.... trouble is, bless her heart, it was not compatible with the American VCR's.

I missed my brother's engagement party in the Isle of Wight that evening

I remember going to a party in Old Coulsdon and whilst walking back with my mates, singing Palace songs absolutely rat arsed at the top of our voices. I seem to remember singing "Stevie Coppell's Red and Blue Army" walking down tho OC side of Farthing Downs, and then there was a reply from the other side of the valley! About twenty people turned up in my house that night probably ten I didn't know. One of them answered the 'phone to my pissed brother and father who phoned to share in the celebration.

What a fantastic memory that day is - the (slightly) older generation's Burnley game - It's hard to get across to some of our younger board contributors how emotional it was, bearing in mind we had gone through a decade of crap games with crap crowds. The thought at that time that we would get 30k in the ground, and Croydon would be red and blue again.. wow!

That was Gary O'Reilly who had been out injured for a few weeks. Gavin Nebbeling replaced him for a couple of games but was sent off v Forest, forcing Steve Coppell to use Rudi Hedman at centre half in the games v Swindon (where he was faultless in both legs). Nebbeling had finished his suspension by the time we played Blackburn at home, but Steve Coppell opted to bring back O'Reilly despite him not being fully fit and having little match practise. Nebbeling and Coppell fell out over this and he joined Fulham in the close season.

the entire run in to the playoffs that season was great - i remember us being rubbish and losing 1-0 away to oxford in march, which was followed by a 3-2 defeat to bournemouth, trevor aylott and all..and being about 15th in the league

queue about 14 games with 2 defeats - away at shrewsbury and swindon midweek - and we almost went straight up at man city's expense

great season

My abiding memories of that game?
- A blow-up doll wearing a palace scarf round its neck being chucked around the Sainsburys end.
- Queuing for a burger, missing the start of the second half, hearing two massive cheers and thinking i'd missed two goals.
- Being amazed at just how loud the Arthur Wait enclosure was from the other side of the pitch
- Perry Suckling saving us at the death

Great, great day. Was it early June because of Hillsborough and so many games being postponed that season ?

Much as I think Ben's a great player, he's got a bit of a way to go to be as good as David Madden. Madden was pure class. One of the most composed midfielders I've ever seen in the red and blue.

I'm repeating myself from a similar recent thread, but if you watch it again, Suckling's save wasn't exactly the Banks-esque miracle that some people seem to recall.

It was certainly a dramatic moment with the game so finely balanced but even though the shot was on target (it arguably might have hit the crossbar), it was pretty well straight at Suckling. No way was it heading for the top corner like some people remember.

It's easy to say, but it wasn't much more of a question of tipping it over the crossbar. Undoubtedly a worrying moment but if that shot had gone in, straight through him, almost dead-centre we'd have been absolutely fuming.

Hmm, that save looked pretty spectacular from where I was standing. Maybe it's rose tinted specs.

I agree with this. Ben could go on to become quite a player, but, at the same level (albeit only for 15 games or so) Madden was in an incredible vein of form. About 2/3rd of those games, he completely dominated with his passiing and physicallity.

I guess I'll never know what truly happened to stop him having an influence the next season (urban myths excluded).

I will also give a little bit of credit there in the centre of midfield to Pardew. They made an excellent midfield partnership and, given the way Geoff played, I'm not sure that Madden would have looked as good alongside GT.

Madden himself confirmed that he'd had an injury, and because he didn't get on with Alan Smith, Smith was reporting back negatively to Steve Coppell with regards his performances in the reserves. Another thing to blame the cyclops for.

Also, he struggled with injuries throughout his career, hence only making 68 league appearances. But bloody hell did he have a presence. Biting tackles, pin point passes, he had the lot!

Agreed. Compare it to what happened the following year where we all made our way to Villa Park. That day we just thought we were going for a day out. None of us expected to win but as it was our first appearance in the semis since the mid 70s we packed out Villa Park simply for the experience. But in the build up to that Blackburn game at Selhurst there was just something in the air. Something that gave us all complete positivity despite starting the game with a two goal defecit. The moment Dave Madden's penalty went in we'd won it. Wrighty's goal just put the icing on the cake.

A few memories of that lovely day :

* It rained, a horrible drizzle rain

* It wasnt full - despite the 30,000 official crowd it was only around 26k

* I was selling Palace news and for this game was allocated a ticket in the left hand Holmsdale. Usually I could choose where I wanted to go - they used to give us an access all areas pass that made the job more than worthwhile.
Not being able to get in the Arthur enclosure left me somewhat miffed.

* I'm still amzed that Simon Garners shot didnt blast into the top of the goal at the Holmesdale end - nice one Perry.

* John Henty (I think) kept us waiting for ages after the game with a lengthy intro track beofre playing GAO - worked perfcectly as the crowd exploded when it finally came on.

* I missed the penalty incident as I was queuing for a dog burger near the Holmesdale bogs.

* As a 16-year-old I was convinced that we would now be in the top flight for keeps

I was a wee bit sceptical about that too. The seats and the AW Enclosure looked virtually full, but there were some areas, particularly at the front of the middle Holmesdale compound where there was so much space, you could almost see the terracing between the fans.

I always thought that that exact 30K figure was a bit suspect.

Interesting, because as I recall no more tickets were available. I heard about someone paying - shock horror - £30 for a ticket because it was sold out.
ElwissAtMemphis
I'm sure the seats were all sold out but if you watch the coverage again, it's clear that at the front of The Holmesdale nearest the away supporters there's loads of space. I'm only talking about a relatively small area of the ground but it was far from full.

That's not to say that there weren't 30,000 people in the ground but such a precise figure always sounded a wee bit suspect. Anyway, my recollection was that tickets were still available that morning if not actually at the turnstyles.

It was more packed in the Arthur Wait Enclosure for the Swindon Semi Final and for the Liverpool (0-2) game the following season than it was for the Blackburn game.

And that was a nice link to the Burnley match, almost exactly 10 years earlier. The same chant had gone up after the 2nd goal/pitch invasion that evening presumably because people were worried that things might spiral out of control and our prize would be taken from us, just when it was in our grasp.

It wasn't all plain sailing for Salako. I remember when he first game back that season, he was brought on as a sub vs Arsenal...played so badly that he wasn't actually taken off again. He seemed to only start playing well right towards the end of that season.

This is true. Barber was preferred to Salako on the left for most of that season. It took a while for Salako to find his feet at that level. If you look at Sean Scannell now and compare him to Salako at that age I would suggest that Scannell is better, let's hope he goes on to achieve what Salako did at Palace.

My Arsenal supporting friend referred to Salako as Palace's version of Gus Caesar. A little harsh perhaps but well reflects how he was rated at the time.

Gus Caesar was a centre half though wasn't he?

The loan spell at (?) Swansea seemed to be the making of Salako.
