Jeff Hopkins. What a Donkey.
Thats the first time I've seen that since I was in the County Ground. It just confirms what a crap defender he was. If he hadn't got injured and replaced by Gary O'Reilly in the FA Cup run, we'd never have got to the final. |

| Swindon had compounds 2 and 3 of the holmesdale for the second leg of that play off semi - the 1st compound by the main stand was rammed with Palace! |

Interesting stuff. That's the first time I'd seen the 1st leg since being there. Surprised to see us wearing white; I'd totally forgotten that.
There were hardly any other matches that season when we wore those shirts. Why were they used that afternoon ? I'm guessing that it was because the last league match we'd lost had been the league fixture at The County Ground a month earlier when we presumably wore the usual all-yellow kit. It strikes me that we don't have a very good record with these superstitious kit changes.
I'd totally forgotten White hitting the bar and the disallowed goal. My general recollection was that it was a terrible performance but seeing that makes me feel we were very lucky to get away with just 0-1. What with our lame display at Ewood Park 10 days later, it's a miracle we made it up with those 2 awful performances away from home when it mattered most. |

Indeed, Swindon could have virtually made the final in the first leg, we were dead lucky to escape with just 1-0. Besides our dire display, all I can really recall is it being a really warm day and the away end being packed solid big time. |

and despite the fact we had our biggest away following for years, the atmosphere from our end was crap. We made up for it at Selhurst admittedly! |

About 3 months after this game in a pre-season friendly at Farnborough, I had a row with none other than Ron Noades in their main stand about Hopkins.
The Farnborough striker was given him the runaround so I had a go at him (I was young and drunk) and the next thing Ron Noades was behind me saying something like "if he could head a ball, he'd be playing for Spurs or Liverpool" which I always thought was a bit of a strange thing to say.
Credit to Noades, he was no shrinking violet but it was funny as other Palace fans in the stand started to all have their say about him. |

The second leg atmosphere was great, "Holmesdale Holmesdale gissa song..."

That's a bit harsh. He was no Baresi but his last ditch block in the dying seconds of the 2nd leg got us to the final. Can't ever forget the incredible own goal against Millwall some months later though.
My memory of that 1st leg is a bit hazy but I remember it being stupidly hot & also Rudi Hedman being absolutely hopeless & both were confirmed in that video.
2nd leg was amazing in the Arthur enclosure. One of my greatest Palace memories. I too miss those Arthur days. |

It was in the early days of the play-offs and there was a two-legged final then.
Blackburn Rovers were the oppo and we lost 3-1 at Ewood (McGoldrick), but turned it round with a 2-0 win at home (Wright, Madden pen) in 90 minutes and Wright nodded our third in extra time to take us up. |

Super footage ... great memories.
Swindon away always stands out for me. Remember the day being blistering hot (the home leg the following week was a balmy evening too), remember sitting on the green outside the ground drinking beer and getting sunburnt.
Due to a harmless ale-induced 'incident' at a combined stag-night/leaving do for a mate going to Oz the previous week which ended in a night in the cells at the (now long-gone) Caterham nick at Timber Hill Park ... we were called back to answer bail by the Police on the morning of the away leg in Swindon. Remember the copper asking us "not going any special are we lads, you're gonna be a while", while we sat there in our Palace gear  :p |

| It doesnt show it on the video , but the stand where the camera was looked liked it would fall down at any minute . I thought we had the whole of the away end but looking at the footage looks we we had two thirds . It was packed though |

Was a great day out - Stopped a station or two before Swindon (Didcot Parkway) for a beer for the best part of the day and then can remember it only being a poor atmosphere because the end as open and the noise didnt seem to travel at all.
Only other thing I can remember was being herded back to the train statuion and the surges to get into it.
I got thrown out about 5 mins into the second leg for shouting at Swindown supporters in an agressive manner by a copper who'd spent his life looking for a reason to eject me :D so gutted I missed it but the rssult was still sweet (and copped a £100 fine for it as well, gutted) |

| Brilliant footage especially enjoy the home leg, i wish there was some Palace videos from that time I remember we were on the LWT Sunday morning highlights program loads around that time v Man City (88) blackburn (88) & (89 p/off final) Brum (89) but I cant find anything on youtube and my original VHS tapes were lost years ago. |

Without doubt the hottest game I have ever been to.
The Palace end was so muted by the heat it was almost eerie. I remember that I couldnt even lean on the crush barrier as it was so hot.
Got back to the car to find that my bag of jelly babies had all melted into one big pile of syrup which had slid out all over the back seats.
The second leg back at Selhurst still goes down as the loudest and fiercest crowd I have ever seen and heard at home. I vividly remember seeing virtually half the length of the AW enclosure surging due to wait of numbers, rather than by the usual deliberate bundling. |

Does anyone know if the following seasons zds/simod cup game was shown on sky ? Making it the first ever live game .
Nigel Sands has the Chelsea game as the first , but elsewhere its shown as the Swindon zds/simod game |
