| One of the most skilful players I have ever seen in a Palace shirt. I had such high hopes for him. What a waste of talent. |

He was never going to replace Wright or Bright , but this is interesting about him off the pitch
After a series of injuries and loss of form David Whyte hung up his boots in 1999 after a short spell at Southend United. Another factor in his decline can be seen in Garry Nelson's book Left Foot Forward.
On the journey back from an away match Charlton stop to buy some fish and chips. Charlton Athletic were a financially tightly run club at this time, and the players were asked to pay for the fish and chips themselves. David Whyte refused and demanded the club pay for his, whilst all other players chipped in. This caused some consternation within the team, and eventually the board paid for his fish and chips. Garry Nelson's description of this incident hints at what the squad and more importantly Alan Curbishley thought of the player, talented but difficult and not a team player.[citation needed] Once David Whyte suffered his loss of form, his contribution to the team was negligible and his work ethic more apparent. An exceptionally talented player, who even when the goals and form dried up offered some excitement for the Charlton fans in a period of anemic attack for the Athletic. |

| Everyone thought he was going to be a Palace great, then completely faded away and never made it. Bostock be aware. |

Had a great first season at Charlton 94/95 then faded badly. I remember on the video “pictures of the palace” (91/92 campaign) he openly admitting in his early days as a player, he used to eat two much junk food, most notably KFC. His early days at Palace were blighted by niggling injuries.
Just think we could have had a forward line consisting off: Wright, Bright & Whyte! |

Not sure why 'never'. He really looked like he had the potential to be the next Ian Wright. |

Yeah, I remember that game at West Brom. Top come back, went from a defeat to a riotous romp. And Whyte scored an absolute screamer. |

| Remember seeing a game on TV against Chelsea where he ran them ragged and scored. He also got a decent tally in the promotion season if I recall |

Remember that game; was it him setting up the goal for Bright or visa versa? He was good that day. Also remember Steve Kember saying he had high hopes for him. Shame it didn't happen.
Sure I've seen him on a few occasions back at the club, watching :p |

Remember that game as well, he was amazing that day. Graeme Le Saux simply couldn't cope with him.
We all obviously thought at the time that he was going to go on to great things but it never happened. |

| He started really well at Charlton and for a while it looked like they'd got a real bargain. I remember there being a story in the local news about how a group of Charlton fans had come up with the hilarious idea of sending Ron Noades a Thank You card for the 'gift' that we'd given them. This did of course end up being vaguely amusing but not in the way they'd initially intended I suspect. |

Would you have played him instead of wright or bright ? He was like moraled wrong time wrong place . Them two together could have been a great double act at palace but it was never going to happen |

No I wouldn't. But they weren't in competition for a place - I'm pretty sure both had left by the time Whyte made his debut. No way was he wrong place wrong time in that respect - he had a great chance to establish himself at the time we had Chris Armstrong and precious little else up front. |

Bright left in September 92' Whyte had a run of games at the back end of the 91/92 campaign. |

| Fair enough (to both Mark and Stu). Clearly he would not have displaced Wright or Bright while they were in their pomp. But he was very young then - and he really did have a chance to establish himself as a successor to Wright, in particular around the 1993-94 promotion season. |

They'd scored first and were boing boinging madly. 4 goals later they weren't so bouncy. It was a brilliant individual goal by Whyte. On a par with Steve Galloway's corker at Cardiff in a 2-0 victory back in the early to mid 80s. Doubt many people would have seen that or possibly remember him. |

I remember a hearty section of the Holmesdale singing for him to come on for Mark Bright when Brighty was at (literally) the worst point of his goal drought. Then he scored and the song was subtly changed. So there would have to be at least a few people on here who would have to say yes in answer to your question.
I sort of remember him being the driving force behind a John Salako hattrick against Charlton. Is that right? |

Would have been mid 80s I think (Galloway was a Coppell signing I think). I remember him, but wouldn't have been at an away game at Cardiff then. Galloway was, according to Coppell, the 'longest in the shower'. |

Pretty sure it was. I met him at a party once. He was mates with Lenny Dennis, Sutton Utd, who I knew from a lads' holiday to Greece. |

| Apparently he ended up playing in Sweden (Coppell suggested his other 'talents' might have fitted in well there) but perhaps we should save this for a Steve Galloway thread! (Oh - and I'm sure you're right about the goal - just meant I wouldn't have seen it.) |

| I remember him putting in one of the best displays I've ever seen from a Palace player in a 1-0 win over Grimsby in 1993-94 season. He scored once but should of had about 4. Even his name rhymed with Wright and I think we all thought we had a ready made replacement. However, that a player with such a talent and skill should of ended up at Charlton (who were far from the club they are now back then) and then Southend makes you wonder about his attitude, application etc. The story about him refusing to pay for fish and chips may give some insight into his attitude etc. |

Sorry misread. Yes a separate thread would be good. Back to David Whyte. :o |

Steve Galloway. I remember the Cardiff game thought it was 3-0 but might be wrong.Last game of the season around 84/85ish. Remember it was our first away win for ages.

David Whyte is without doubt one of the most talented and athletic players Palace have ever had. Tragic that he didn't fulfil his potential.
We played Forest away in a league cup game, Whyte was up against Des Walker at his best and made him look like a pub player. I remember us chanting "You'll never beat Des Walker" mockingly (one of Forest fans' favourite chants at the time) after Whyte had rounded him for the umpteenth time and scored. We still lost (4-2 I think) :( |

quite agree,.
i rememebr seeing his first team debut..alan smiths first era ( i think)
he was great apart from scoring a goal - nealry got one from a over head kick - similar to pele's goal in 'escape to victory' (bar the editing)
also remeber sheff wed was due to bid 3.5 mill for him in his charton days.
always though he was due to be a Palace legend !! but never happended ( like Grant watts etc ) |

You're thinking of Steve Galliers - one of Ron/Dario's imports from Wimbledon back in 80/81. About 2'6" in his socks. |

As for Whyte, he had bundles of potential but like many others, didn't make the most of it. |

have to disagree , he played great in every game for england . he had pace , could cross the ball and could also score . at the time we had nobody better on the left wing for england |
