something queer has happened to my home puter.

certain applications have just stopped working.
(notably Firefox, and Sonicstage for my mp3 player)

they both open for about 3 seconds before shutting down.

They both were working, then my computer downloaded some virus definitions and now they don't work.

I have tried doing a system restore back to before the definition was updated, but it fails with "unspecified catastrophic error" which is a shame.

I really need sonicstage up & running as I'm doing the choonz for a birthday party on Saturday.

Any suggestions on what else I can do?

Uninstall your anti-virus program and see if the other stuff works again. Or go with Dave's suggestion.

Re-install the anti-virus.
PalaceMonkey
oh yeah, that sounds like a plan.
shall try tonight!

Add the programs to the 'data execution prevention' list. To get toit in xp right click my computer. Then properties, advanced, performance options and then dataexecution prevention.

This is a list of programs that are allowed to start. Windows sometimes decides that a program should not be allowed to run as it may be a virus. You may have had a windows update as well.

I've got Vista, so don't know if that'll be the same, but I'll have a look, thanks.

Haven't had any windows updates, I checked the log, just the definitions update.

Try system restore in safe mode?
PalaceMonkey
still failed in safe mode :(

none of the diagnostic tools can find anything wrong either.

What anti-virus programme are you using?

Have you got a hijackthis logfile?
Dave

People like me who are a bit thicky and incompetent ;)

Mac's don't seem to have any games, which kind of puts me off, and I just don't understand Linux :(

I'd love one! Can't afford one at the moment, but would like to get a Wii when I have a spare bit of cash. But I really really like PC gaming. I know it's a personal point of view, but I just don't think any console comes close to a PC for First Person Shooters, which I love, and also the way in which you can customise your games so easily. Oblivion is a great game, but the original version annoyed me from the off, as it is so structured that rather than immersing yourself in the game you get distracted by trying to level up the right skills all the time. It's a pain in the arse, and the way as you got stronger your enemies just increased to seemed very contrived. Having a PC, rather than a console version, enabled me to download a mod that I feel made the game fantastic and let me lose myself in it.

After years of not being able to play games on my PC I love having a graphics card capable of doing a job again!

How does Linux work for games?

Why not try a Live linux CD or DVD on your desktop

Although if you have a shitty ATI card then maybe not...

have uninstalled most of the CA security system, though it refuses to uninstall the firewall. so I just turned that off.

have installed latest version of Firefox, and that now works.

have reinstalled Sonicstage, but that still doesn't work.

I am at a loss.
If I can find the power supply for my external HD, I might just put everything on that, and start afresh with an entire system restore.
