OK, I am almost out of space on my hard drive and to be honest I've been wanting to get an external drive for a while now (so when I upgrade my computer in a year or so I'll have all my media ready to plug and play into the new machine!)

Now, I want at least 500gb but what's making it difficult is that I want firewire (for myself) and a USB2 connection (for if I have to hook it up to anyone else computer, which may not have firewire).

What are the good makes of external hardrive? Looking at reviews almost every model I look at has someone complaining about their drive failing (which would be gutting).

So far I have the LaCie d2 Quadra and the Seagate Freeagent Pro as two possibilites, but both have their critics. Is there a good website to look at to search for this type of thing?

On a side point while searching I found this Disgo Media Bank which looked good at first, as you could hook it up to a telly as well and play stuff from it on that, as well as record from the telly, but it's scart only when I'll want to get a HD at some point and no firewire. Nice idea though, for those of us with no capability to stream to our tellys!

Archive your donkey porn, you won't need one. Worked for me.

Looks good, but I don't think I have an eSATA connection :(

And Nork, I am afraid I am committed to my donkey porn. I will share it with you if you like :)

eSATA connections do look the best. Is it easy to put one in? Or is it really worth the effort? I just want this external hard drive to have all my music and video on it, I won't really be running any programmes off of it.

Any suggestions people?

Firewire is fine

I have a Iomega 500GB and it's the best I have used

I have both a Lacie and Seagate freeagent.

The lacie 500gb was about 50 quid delivered from Scan using the free delivery offer for avforums members, the seagate is a similar price at ebuyer.

The seagate offers esata, firewire or USB. The lacie was USB only.

Both been switched on for months with no problems.

look at the istar mini for streaming. I have my esata drive plugged into that, it acts as network storage aswell as a local drive for the istar.

Does that have a firewire connection dude? Spec only seems to say USB though perhaps I'm looking at the wrong one!

Mr Statto
I got a Western Digital 500Mb drive a couple of months ago for the same reasons as you and have had absolutely no trouble with it. Mine doesn't have Firewire, but the USB2 connection seems to be perfectly adequate. I'm sure they do one with Firewire as well.

One thing you really ought to do (considering how many people do seem to have problems with external drives) is backup onto DVD everything you're copying onto it.

Well, I've plumped for the Seagate Freeagent Pro. It seems to get fairly good reviews, I don't have to reformat as I would for a Western Digital (not a huge issue), it has firewire for now and esata for when I upgrade and the free six months of online storage will be handy in case I have a duff drive and it fails!

Hope it's a good choice :) Thanks everyone for your tips
