Couldn't see a thread, am off there today (first of 6 days over the fortnight).
Who's going to win this year? I think Federer may just do it again, but Nadal could well overtake him having won Queens. Am also conscious that I'm a bit out of touch as didn't recognise some of the other seeds' names! Think it might be a bit too soon for Djorkovic (?sp) to do well this year, but wonder if any other dark horses might appear! |

I can't see past Federer, though I saw Nadal beat Roddick and Djokovic and he was very impressive. Non seeds to maybe look out for are Ancic, who is coming back from injury and Cilic who to me looks like a top 20 player of the near future and who also has a fairly kind draw. Nadals second round match could be intresting. Both Isner, who has a gigantic serve and Gublis (who beat henman at the french last year) could test him.
As for Murray, he has got a pretty tough draw. He will probably have to play (and beat) Santoro, Malisse, Hass, Gasquet, Nadal, Roddick and Federer to win. |

I am going for Federer, but only just. Think he will be determined to prove everyone wrong right now. |

No chance - I had to go at 6am to get in the queue for tickets and only then got No 2 and the other outside courts. |

Thanks, I thought they should go earlier. I don't think they really mind which courts they get on, it's more for the experience having never been before, well her and Emma haven't. Whereas her boss is a bit of a regular each year and has advised the time to meet. |

I went a few years ago to camp outside the night before. After an evening in the pub and a crate of beer to keep us going in through the night, I had spent most of my money. When we got to the front of the queue and were offered Centre Court or Court 1 we had go with outside court tickets as we couldnt find the cash for the good seats.
They thougt we were mad and told us for outer tickets all we had to do was turn up at 9am on the day of play and queue for an hour or so. |

I've queued before, from about 8am and got in, but they'll only get ground tickets and won't be in until about 12 ish I'd reckon, but they should be ok. Earlier would guarantee, and possibly get them a court 2 ticket at least. |

The price varies depending on which day in the fortnight it is.
We paid £38 for a Centre Court ticket today.
It is around £20 for a ground ticket, where you can watch any of the matches on the outside courts. |

They got in without a problem. She really enjoyed the day and wasn't at all bothered about just being able to get into the outside courts, they watched a few matches, had some Pimms, ate some strawberries & cream and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the whole experience.
I'm not sure what time they got inside the grounds but it couldn't have been too late as they were able to get some photos inside court 1 when it was virtually empty. |

Really enjoyed the Ivanovic match earlier. I mean, I don't even watch tennis. I got in from work, flicked the TV on and thought 'ooh Ana Ivanovic, let's have a quick perv', then ended up watching the whole second half of the match and really feeling tense about the result.
The French woman did brilliantly to keep it going for so long, really give Ivanovic a huge scare. If anything it was Ivanovic who looked most jittery, especially when she finally got to match point. Win one game, lose the next one, back to square one. But I was glad she got through, cos she's a hottie:D
p.s. and a very talented player. yes. |

It won't be announced till later but my money would be on:
Federer vs Gicquel (near certainty)
Mauresmo vs Serena (very likely, Ivanovic vs Zheng possible but that's more likely to be on court 1)
Ancic vs Ferrer (Safin vs Seppi also possible, Hewitt vs Bolelli and Baghdatis vs Stadler sneaking in as outside bets)
These are all guesses though - no inside info, and therefore probably not much help! |

bagdahtis to make the semi is a good bet. I'd say he is favorite for his part of the draw. Lopez plays a serve-volley game and can be difficult but i think a bagdahtis playing at 80% will be able to beat him.
Wawrinka has been playing well this year on clay and safin is ...safin. on his day he can beat federer (or djokovic) but you never know with him. despite his 2 grand slams he is probably the biggest under achiever of the last 15 years. If i was betting I'd still go with Safin.
2nd monday is for me the nest day of the tournament. you always get a plenty of good matches giving 7 hours of top class tennis. |

Is Wimbledon the biggest slam of them all?
Im a fan but my access to the sport is generally restricted to Wimbledon.
Every year you hear players say 'this is the big one' or 'every player dreams of winning Wimbledon more than any other'. Do they say that at every slam to the local press. I hear most commentators say similar things but is this just our media preserving national pride. Do all the slams claim the same thing? I'm sure they dont concede their own slam to Wimbledon, imagine the French doing that! Are we just biased...
Anyway, when I head such things each year I naturally think, yep this is the big one!!
But is it? Any tennis boffs who follow more than me know the objective verdict and why? |

Yes, it's the biggest. manily because its the oldest tournament. Second oldest is the US, then french then ozzie, though the sydney invitational and the toronto tournaments are both older than the US. I'm 90% sure that Wimbledon also has the most overall prize money, though i think the US gives more to the winners.
From a players point of view I'd say most players would pick wimbledon if they could only ever win one slam. The exceptions to this rule would be French players who would always pick Roland Garros, as would many southern europeans and south americans. Some ozzies and americans would probably pick their own tournament to win, but not all. For example both McEnroe and Sampras have said many times they consider Wimbledon to be the number one tournament.
The Austrailian open is widely considered the 4th of the majors. until the 20's it was played all over australia and new zealand. it also suffered from many top players not competiting there. This was partly due to the travel issues and partly because the infrastructure was nowhere near the standard of the other slams. This changed in the 80's with air travel improvements and most imortantly the tournament moving to melbourne park. |

The move to Melbourne Park in 1988 (known as Flinders Park at the time) was important, but equally so was moving the event back to its rightful place in the calendar. Between 1977 and 1985 the Aussie Open was held in December instead of January. This meant that it became the last grand slam event in the calendar year, instead of the first. Many top players would consider it too much effort to trek down to Melbourne at the end of the year unless they'd already won the other three slam events (which none of them ever did during those years). When it was moved back to January in 1987, the top players started turning up for it again as they knew they had to play it to have any chance of a calendar-year grand slam. |

Have you heard the offending interview? I heard it for the first time the other day and I thought it was complete tongue in cheek with Henman sitting next to him. Is no different to any jokes I make to friends with foreign allegiances for a little bit of banter.
