I have noticed that my pc has started to really slow down of late, but it is mainly affecting my web browser.

I had the beta Firefox 3 and it was running fine but over the last few days it has slowed to a crawl and barely manages to open a page without me needing to refresh it

Is there anything I can do to sort it out as I have checked with AVG for a virus and its clear and both spybot and Ad-aware have found nothing..

Thanks in advance.

Oh and before you say it Dave I don't think Ubuntu will work for me at the moment ;)

cut down ya music content, and also stop using limewire
klimskady
I don't use limewire?

Maybe do a system restore to when it was working ok?
Rock
I am finding that when AVG is running a scan my PC slows to a crawl. Perhaps see if that is running?
klimskady
Might well be my AVG but I will do a system restore just to make sure.

Cheers
klimskady
Right well it isn't AVG and the system restore hasn't done a thing to improve the speed of the browser, it is making going online a complete nightmare!
klimskady
Also my tabs are not loading which in turn is causing even slower browsing.

I don't think any of my programs will work with Ubuntu otherwise I would give it a go.

Ok seriously, Do most programs work with Ubuntu or is only the packaged software that will work?

If I can have guarantees that I shouldn't have a problem then I am more than willing to give it a go...

Trouble is I also need to stream my media to my media systems so can I still use TVersity?

The short answer klims is no. Ubuntu is good but don't expect your old windows software to work on it although there will more than likely be other equivalent programs.

As for your PC, is your disk filling up? How much memory have you got? What is loading at startup, try running it in safemode with Network and see if its any better, if so then you know its something that is being loaded. The windows registry doesn't get cleaned out very well and just gets really bloated over time.

Finally press ctrl-alt-del to get task manager up, look at the processes tab, is the cpu going to 100% a lot, if so what is making it go there? (Search by CPU usage to put it in order of what is being used).
klimskady
Ok then its as I thought about Ubuntu.

I have over 100gb left on my HD, although I am looking at getting a 1TB Seagate External HDD to store all my media on.

I think that I have 1gb of Ram, should add more really.

My CPU usage is hovering between 2% and 6%

I shall try the reboot in safe mode with network.

Have you much memory? 1Gb min really on XP and as memory is cheap as chips I'd go for 2Gb before you throw the PC out.

Oh and press-F8 whilst booting to get the safe mode options.

On the CPU thing, thats low so might just be while you are sitting there doing nothing. Watch it while you surf around and use it normally.

Have you also checked your internet speed? Is it as fast as you expect it to be, try www.speedtest.net

I edited my post to say that I had 1Gb of ram, I will definately grab an upgrade before too long.

CPU usage is now at around 25%

Just going to boot in safe mode now.
Ridcully
Who is your ISP?
klimskady
Sky Broadband.

Right so I am now on safe mode, no improvement on the speed of opening pages and loading them.

Just about to do the speed test.
Russ_uk
Grab a copy Of "Tune up Utilities 2008" that should help.

u can get a free copy 30 copy at there site - just google it ;)
klimskady
Right on speed test:

38ms Ping

298 Kbps Download

481 Kbps Upload

Now I know I am on Sky Max but how that relates I have no idea.
Ridcully
Download is very very slow, looks like your problem.
klimskady
Don't suppose the age old switching router off and on will work then.
Ridcully
On max, you can get up to 16Mbps or 16384kbps, you are getting 298kbps so are running at just under 2% of your max speed. Are you running any torrents? Is anyone else potentially nicking your BB? Are you running wireless

Yes, try it, often the easiest fix, then turn off your wireless and plug in directly to test
Ridcully
You haven't plugged any new telephone equipment in have you? You know you must have an ADSL filter on every socket in your house don't you. If you have one without make sure nothing is plugged into it.
klimskady
No new telephone equipment, although I did move my main phone line though as I have got an extension lead from main box which has now got a microfilter with my phone and the adsl cable in.
Ridcully
Ohhh, this is interesting. Seems they are playing with their lines, quickly skimmed through it and it seems others are experiencing the same sort of problems as you (eg post 416). Read through and see what they recommend, all sounds a bit naughty to me.

Sounds bang on like your problem...call Sky and mention your problems and reference the thread
klimskady
Cheers for that mate, I shall look at that.

I have just done the speed test again and it is as follows

Ping 46ms

Download 5689 Kbps

Upload 625 Kbps

Bit better than last time!

Sounds very much like my problem, I will ring them in the morning and see what they can do.

I wouldn't mind but its only been in this house for about two and half weeks! :grrr:

Do this...

I'm off now, sounds like the DLM problem the thread is talking about. Now you are back to near on 6Mbps it should be ok. If you are slowing down though refer to the thread for advice.

Final thing, if you can only get a max of 6Mbps then you might be better off with Sky Mid and save yourself some cash.

Will look into that and if its not worth having max I will lower it down, as there is no point paying for it if I can't get the max.

Cheers for your help tonight, its much appreciated. x

Any luck Klim?
klimskady
Well I phoned them up and discussed what the problem was, they did a bit of a fiddle around and I am now at 7616 Downstream which is a vast improvement.

I just hope they don't fiddle with my line again, and a little bit of advanced notice wouldn't have gone amiss!

Cool glad to hear and I agree with you on the other bit, appalling customer care...we'll balls up your line and assume you are OK unless you tell us otherwise. Oh and we won't even send you any notification to tell you it is happening.
