You can bet your bottom dollar he wouldn't say the same thing if it was an English club trying to lure someone under contract from Madrid!!

Ronaldo: Platini backing Real

Manchester United have reacted angrily to the Spanish side's interest in their star man, even reporting Real to Fifa, who rejected their official complaint.

And Platini feels that the Primera Division side have every right to express their interest in the player, widely regarded as one of the world's leading talents.

Platini told a news conference in Vienna: "Every club in the world would like to have Ronaldo.

"It's part of the system we have today. Players move from club to club and I can understand why Real Madrid want him.

"They had [Alfredo] di Stefano and [Ferenc] Puskas in the past, and as Ronaldo is considered one of the best or the best player in the world it's normal.

"If the club has the finances they can do it, if they don't have the money they can't."

This could get very interesting. Pretty stupid thing to say

What a knob.

This guy is so anti English its crazy, what is it with the Europe hating us so much anyway?

Love the last line about having money just proves what football is all about now. Do hope United really jump down their throats on this one, Real have NO right to illegally approach a player which I think is a bit more serious then actually declaring an interest!

I've not bought this "Platini is anti-English" story, until this particular issue. It's disgusting.

who cares, I think it is quite funny to see Moan U getting all tantrum about someone tapping up their show pony, like they never ever.....

I think the Champs league final really ••••ed Platini off; a Russki club 500 mill in debt against an American club 650 mill in debt is not what european football should be about.

He hates the premier league, so do I
kolinkins
He doesnt like success. In that way, he is very British

If they have the money? What despite previously carrying the debt the size of several developing countries and manipulating their way out of it in a decidely dodgy way? Michel, I thought you stood against that too? You're advocating anti-copetitive practices surely?

All true, but maybe Platini should do just a little research into the finances of that paragon of corrupt practices Real Madrid. They were the pioneers of turning footy into a bent circus.

So someone's upset the poor little rich kids at Man Ure. Who cares. Perhaps someone would like to explain the difference between Ronaldo being courted by Real Madrid and Man Ure grabbing Paul Ince, Spurs turning Routledges' head and countless others.

Maybe because our fans are thugs?
Notice the difference between this European Championship and the others? How many arrests have there been? Why is it that this year, when England aren't in it, that the fans are unsegregated, and no fights?

I wonder...

I am sort of torn about this. It is really hard not to feel that there would have been more trouble if England had been there, & none of those incidents seem like the wholescale riot that England fans are quite capable of bringing to the table, yet have England fans not behaved pretty well at the last 2 or 3 tournaments ? i don't remember the full on carnage in Germany that many predicted.

Platini is clearly driving an anti english agenda. IMO he'd serve European football better if he concentrated on ridding it of the racism that still lingers in many parts of Europe, but amongst the major leagues, Italy & Spain in particular. Fining Spain £20,000 for racist chanting at International matches doesn't really cut it. Banning them from the Championship they look set to win would have sent out the correct & proper signal & presumably forced the Spanish into addressing the problem.
How business's run themselves is not really any of his business, nor should it be within his jurisdiction.

No SB. This is irrelevant. When Platini says if they have the finances, does this mean in ready cash. Or does this mean that if they can finance with debt then they can bid for the player. If that is the case, it goes against what he said about Man Utd and Chelsea only a week or so before. It shows him to be in favour of the Italian and Spanish leagues over the Premier. That would be fine if he wasn´t the President of UEFA.

If Real Madrid have to find say 60 million pounds to finance this deal, I would suggest that even they haven´t got it to hand.

Nicely balanced post. A lot of the trouble that has occurred with English fans abroad I seem to remember has been caused by the English thug reputation, and other fans wanting to take them on. Also by the 'labelling' of English fans as hooligans by zealous local policing agencies keen to make a name for themselves by lashing out at the smallest incident. That said, there are of course plenty of morons but none moreso than other European countries IMO.

As for Platini, I've said plenty about him elsewhere. If he does stumble upon a good point, it's pretty much lost amongst the hypocrisy of most of what he says.

I'm no fan of the way the prem is run but Real go beyond either Man Utd or Chelsea in terms of scumminess IMHO, even if you overlook the franco past you still have a club thats effectly funded by public money and sells its TV rights solo f***ing over every other side but Barca in the league.

There is I'd say very little chance his anti debt comments were anything other than an opportunity to take a pop at english clubs. In reality they'd actually be a good thing for the prem(other than maybe Chelsea and even then Roman is rich enough to just write off the debt) as it would put a stop to the exploitative leveraged buyouts that have happened at Man Utd and Liverpool. These were actually clubs who were run as sensible businesses in the past where as the likes of Real, Barca, Juve, Milan etrc have never been anything more than loss making PR exercises for local politicans and businessmen.

The fans are never segregated at tournaments, Henry Winter came out with the same point in this morning Telegraph, implying that the crowds were unsegregated because of England's absense. It's nonsense, the ticketing would of been exactly the same had England been there. Both sets of fans get an official allocation normally at either end of the stadium, the rest of the tickets are free for use for whoever hgets one.
Furthermore, there were arrests on the day of Poland v Germany and also bottle throwing and fighting between Croatian and Turkish fans. Croatia has also been fined for some racist chanting from it's fans.

Misreporting by the media. There was no trouble at the tournament, thanks to the absence of England. Let the magic wand also be wafted over Madrids debt, let their Iberian and Italian counterparts continue bribery of officials - it's the English that are evil.

Can't we, as outsiders to all this, continue a mutual loathing of both UEFA/FIFA, and their corrupt officals, alongside that of Manure and the Premier League?

To be fair abroad maybe, but domestically we have one of the best records lately. Take your average football related arrests in England on a Saturday and compare them to say Seria A and Holland and I bet its worse on the continent.

Serie A is far worse, they are having the problems now that we had in the 80's here.

Not at all. I thought he disappeared very quickly after presenting the trophy, and was an excellent 'host'.

I too am torn on a lot of what he says. He makes some good points - and to be fair it's not like Manure (wankers) haven't tapped players up in the past, so for them to complain about a business practice that they themselves have enjoyed is hypocritical to say the least. Perhaps that is what he is saying - this happens in football. The biggest clubs want the best players. And the foreign investment, and levels of accompanying debt, in the Premier League should be a matter of concern.

On the other hand though, with match fixing scandals in Italy and Portugal, and the downright underhand way that Real Madrid got their debts cleared by the Spanish govn a few years back, to name but a few issues, I think Platini would do well to look about him a bit more.

Absolutely, I bet he's on a personal mission to get us banned from European (club football) and thrown out of the next Euro's if we manage to qualify.

It must have half killed him presenting medals to the English players at the Champions League Final.

Plenty fights, well over 1000 arrest confirmed by Austrian Police - don't known if that was the tournament or just the Austrian part. After one match alone there were 200 arrests and a couple of police injured, but of course it wasn't widley reported, because the press, including the much of the UK press as it fills the inches, want the violence to be an English problem. Face it, in a number of places they tried to explain the violence at the UEFA cup final as being caused by the English. I'm guessing UEFA ignored the Euro 2008 violence in the same way as the UEFA cup violence - because it wasn't at the ground itself
