Recently I decided to back up my DVD's, and had been doing so simply by copying them onto DVD (DVD5 or D/L depending on the size) but obviously this entails buying blank discs, which even in bulk still adds up.
However, I have now just bought a brand new 1TB external hard drive and it's got me thinking maybe this isn't the best way? I don't have a media PC at the moment, but in the future it'd be nice to be able to stream my media to my telly, and for that I'll need it saved somewhere. Is it worth just saving them onto my hard drive? If I do, what is the best format to save them on? Is mpeg4 ok, as that also allows me to watch them on my iPod, or does that not translate well to a larger screen? Should I save them as DVD files (with separate video and audio folders) which means I could always burn them to disc if I wanted to go round to a friends house to watch, but can you play a file saved like that easily (I watch most stuff on my computer at the moment, don't have a separate DVD player)
Any advice welcomed :) |
