Well I wasn't expecting that....

Roberto Di Matteo has been named as the new manager of League One outfit MK Dons, replacing Paul Ince.

The former Chelsea midfielder, 38, has signed a one-year deal with the option of a further contract and will be officially unveiled on Thursday.

Di Matteo won 34 caps for Italy during spells with Lazio and Chelsea and retired from playing in 2002.

"Like the club itself, Roberto is young, ambitious and hungry to succeed," said a club statement.

"We are enormously excited about the team moving forward under his leadership," the statement continued.

Ince left to replace Mark Hughes at Blackburn last month after guiding the Dons to the League Two title last season.

Winkleman was keen to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible with the Dons players reporting back for pre-season training on Monday and said he had received 40 applications for the vacant post.

It is Di Matteo's first managerial appointment and he is believed to have beaten off competition for the position from former Leicester, QPR and Plymouth boss Ian Holloway and former Burnley manager Steve Cotterill.

Really hope he does well there. Big disappointment that his career was cut short early so hoping he has a long and successful stint in management

Nice guy. Strange move if Cotteril was in the frame etc. A real risk but I hope it pays off for Roberto's sake - not MK Dons sake!

This is either going to be a roaring success or a spectacular failure. Let's hope it's the latter.

I always liked Roberto, good luck at the Dons but it really is a risky move

I think MK Dons have made a good choice in appointing Di Matteo,
he has always come across as a nice guy and in my oppinion was a very good footballer (unfortunatley that was cut short).
Like most continental players he was very professional in his approach to the game and i'm sure that will be no different as a manager.
good luck to him.

You think appointing someone who has recently been involved in a chain of restaurants to a club who has just won promotion is a good move? Each to their own, but he's got this job on his playing reputation and it could well end quite badly.

I think it's nice to see clubs giving new managers a chance.

All too often, there seems to be a merry go round of failed managers who have almost guaranteed themselves managers jobs for life off the back of one or two good seasons - see dowie/taylor
