Hello
I'm thinking of buying a new PC for my new flat. I'm currently looking at a Dell. The Specs are;
Intel® Processor Q6600 Quad Core™ (2.40GHz, 1066Mhz FSB, 8MB cache), 4gb Memory, 750gb Hard drive, 20 inch wide screen monitor, 256mb graphics card, Wifi compatable....
Price is £807 inc which includes delivery.
Is this a good deal or can i get a better elsewhere?
Thanks |

Look on Dell Outlet for a better deal.
Plus, consider what you are using your PC for... a Quad Core isnt that much use to you at the moment. |

You can get better at www.pcspecialist.co.uk. I got a very similar spec
Q6600
4GB RAM
250GB Hard Drive
8800GT Graphics card (a very good card plays all the latest games at high spec)
Wifi
And a very flashy 19" widescreen LG monitor (very impressed with it)
for £770 inc postage and delivery
Only downside maybe is that the case is quite large |

Cheers for the advice so far.
I'm not a gamer. I'll be using it for internet, sorting out my music collection and using photoshop on it. |

Then you don't really need to spend £800....you can get a PC for £300-400 that will do those jobs. |

| Only buy a Dell if you are not into upgrading as when it is out of date or broke you will have to buy a new one. Build your own it's more fun. |

I have actually looked at the Imac. It's a lot of money for not a high spec machine. Am i wrong? |

They are fan-fecking-tastic. Imagine a world where you can install a new software package ( in seconds) and nothing breaks. |

You won't be needing a flashy graphics card or even a quad core then. If you want to save a bit of money go for a Dual Core which is still very powerful. I have the Revometer up on the quadcore and even with multiple proccesor heavy programmes and windows running I have never seen it go over 40%. You could get somethin that will run everything you need like a charm for £500-600 |

unless it's going to be a server for 30 users thats way ott.
Dell as someone else said. The software needs to be written to use quad core and at the moment very little is. |

Takes a while to get your head around it but you don't need all the Giga this and super flop that. For example a number of companies I know are moving to macs ( and still running windows !!) as they are faster for normal use. Why i have no idea. better quality components maybe. As you are not gaming you dont need all that grunt. Also you dont end up with all that "clutter" you get with PC's. Loads of arguments for and against but in simple terms they work they perform & ilife is great. You just drag and drop all over the place. I wouldn't go back now. |

I'm looking to get a new laptop. Need it for a bit of programming, video editing, photoshop editing etc. Not planning to play games on it, but I know video processing can require a bit of power.
Any recommendations? Ideally, don't want to spend over £500. |

How hard is this? I've never done more than upgrade a memory chip before, but I'm more than capable of following instructions - is there a good website with a step-by step guide? |

Pretty straight forward, mostly just plugging things in, if you can read a manual you will be fine. Take care when installing the processor but apart from that nothing is particularly fragile. |

| The actual building is pretty simple, the tricky bit is buying all the parts that will actually work together in the way you want. Eg how many PCI-E slots on the motherboard? IDE or SATA? What memory speed, how many channels? If you want to overclock, will the stock cooler be enough? Will the CPU fit into a socket 775 motherboard? Is a 300w PSU enough? Is there physically enough room in the case for the GFX card you want? Is the motherboard RAID compatible? And so on. |

Disagree, just bought a Dell laptop, the outlet looks great but bearing in mind what you're getting isn't strictly brand new their prices are pre VAT and they charge £60 for delivery the end price is as high as just getting it brand new (after you negotiate price)
I rang the actual Dell people and haggled them down on an XPS 1530 laptop from £780 to £650 delivered (and brand new of course), had a good spec as well. As soon as I mentioned the outlet store he dropped the price
This was my spec if it's of any help (outlet spec was same apart from 2.5Ghz processor and ended up at £730 delivered)
