Well for a start most corporate setups won't support IMAP. That in itself is reason enough.

Also, I don't think IMAP supports remote wipe, does it?

Works like a dream. The touch screen is dead easy to use if you don't have a phobia for it, and displays all text "conversations" in a great Ichat type mode.

Needs a new piece of software available via installer but easily done and used.

does this mean if I get an iphone I can check work emails in the same way as a blackberry? If I unlock it can I just put my workphone sim in there. Have you tried Skype from it (fring or iscoot or something) and is it any good? If I buy one in the US will it work ok? Should condiser buying a 32 gig I touch instead and unlock it and use it for Skype?

Probably not unless your company allows access to their mail servers on the internet. Blackberry's work differently.

Skype isn't available on the Iphone, in fact currently you can't install any software without unlocking it. This will change next month but I doubt there will be skype.

If you unlock it probably, I wouldn't risk it for the paltry saving

Tks. I'm still very tempted to get one unlocked and try and get it to work with my work phone sim card though. I need to use Skype for some conference calls sometimes and I'm the only one who hasn't got it, so need to figure out a mobile way of doing that. Also, my IPOD is dead.

does it matter what sort of sim you put in? Mine would be vodafone. Was it new? Have you invalidated the warranty by getting unlocked? Have you tried to use if for Skype? Was it a random punter or an ebay shop?

This suggests you can use Skype without unlocking. Any idea if it works?

Be a part of The Register's Security Seminar, Live & Online, 9th July 2008 iPhone fans are set have their wish granted, with the news that a German firm has developed an application that brings Skype functionality to the device.

One of the complaints that users of the hybrid phone and MP3 player had was relating to its instant messaging functionality, or lack thereof. German firm Shape Media has stepped in to fill the gap.

The application, dubbed "IM+ for Skype", transforms the iPhone into a Skype handset. The web application, which works through the iPhone's Safari web browser, allows iPhones to use the Skype messaging service along with its Voice over IP (VoIP) network.

By logging on to skypeforiphone.com, users can access their Skype account, allowing them to make free Skype to Skype calls, and use their SkypeOut credits to make calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world. According to Shape Media, the application will work across different networks and does not require Wi-Fi to operate.

The application was designed for use with the iPhone's touchscreen, and has the added benefit of offering more cost-effective call charges than many carriers, for both landline and mobile calls - domestic and overseas.

Similar software has already been developed for platforms such as Windows Mobile, RIM's Blackberry, Palm and Symbian devices.

Internet access is bundled in with the cost of the monthly O2 tariff,s you shouldn't need to pay any extra.

I believe there are deals with the cloud to use their wi-fi hotspot's for nothing if you have an iphone, and the answer to that middle question is yes.

Ok, i might wait till i get back from holiday before i make my decision then.

It was an iphone or a 32 gig ipod touch. I just didnt know what i'd be better off for with net use etc.
