so can I download / stream, whatever the term is something on iplayer when I'm in a wifi zone and then watch it when I'm not pls? That is on the Itouch.

Dave 11-09-2008 02:06 PM

Not unless you jailbreak

Shoreditch CPFC 11-09-2008 02:09 PM

is jailbreaking reversible? I.e. if it all goes wrong can you restore factory defaults and thus still use the guarantee?

Short answer is yes, longer answer available if you want it.

Shoreditch CPFC 11-09-2008 02:52 PM

yes pls to longer answer.

Dave 11-09-2008 03:18 PM

So when you jailbreak there is a small chance you could lock yopurself out of the phone or 'brick it' - so bear that in mind. Seems to be very rare though.

The other issue is that if you go > standard firmware --> jailbreak --> standard then I *believe* you may lose your settings and have to add them again.

Shoreditch CPFC 11-09-2008 03:23 PM

cool. I'm gonna get me a mic attachment for Skype & then jailbreak I think

Dave 11-09-2008 03:38 PM

Personally I think you would have more love for the Skype phone than this

Shoreditch CPFC 11-09-2008 03:59 PM

well I've got a blackberry & a touch. What I want is to be able to make Skype calls occasionally without carrying a 3rd device around. It isn't really a money thing, it's a functional practical thing.

You mean like unlocking a vodafone mobile phone to install apps on it that vodafone doesn't approve of?

No but they lock them down to restrict the software you install on them

Dave 12-09-2008 09:07 AM

If vodpaphone locked down the phone and the phones were unix based then yes it would be called jailbreaking.

Nokia runs symbian.

The Samsung runs Windows mobile, from the people who brought you Vista, Internet explorer etc.

PalaceMonkey 12-09-2008 04:20 PM

indeed.
that review says the samsung is a bit buggy, but still better than the iPhone.

5 mpix. Just a gimmick. Unless you are a professional photographer, generating large format print ads, you do not need anything above 3.5 - 4.

It's as eddie says above. You my need to chop down the title that is displayed.

I tried doing one for the BBS but the icon is just the main page and looks a bit guff.

Ridcully 13-09-2008 01:01 PM

I'd like to see an option that auto sorts the icons based on popularity, I'm also at three panes now but its only going to majorly increase as more apps come out.

Off button and Home button together for a second and release.

The screen will go white for a second and you'll hear the camera shutter.

I think I would buy it again, even if it went up to 99p.

It's a good app to show off the multi-touch and accelerometer. I've found that some people think that multi-touch is the same as what is in their k850i and others haven't a clue what an accelerometer is!

The inclusion of 'shake to feed' to the Koi Pond app was a lovely addition and has people saying "wow" when I show it to them.

Had an Iphone for a few weeks now, a few issues (another one I posted on the Itunes thread but no one has been able to give any hints yet)

1) I use my calender and contacts at work so need to sync there however my music is on my itunes at home. Got both set to manage music manually but as soon as I plug into Itunes at work it says that I've been authorised with another itunes and it erases all my music. I've googled but cannot find a solution. How does anybody else deal with situations like this ?

2) I can't get music streaming to my bluetooth headphones the phone works via bluetooth but no music.

Apologies if these have already been answered earlier in the thread but couldn't obviously find it.

Dave 17-09-2008 02:35 PM

2) Iphone doesn't support A2DP yet, so if you are pairing with the phone itself then it won't work.

On the first point you can only manually manage your tunes from one PC unfortunately. I have my calendar and contacts from my work laptop, which is set to not sync any music, and then just manually manage my music from my home desktop. It works pretty well for me, so on your work computer just set it to not sync any music.

I can't help on the second one unfortunately.

Cpfc121 17-09-2008 02:41 PM

when the message pops up about erasing press cancell then

on the iphone device page at the buttom underneath the picture of the iphone should be a options section

uncheck the one that says "Automatically sync when this iphone is connected"

then click on the info tab at the top next to summary then select what you want to sync then press apply ( all done ) thats how i do mine

Axie 17-09-2008 02:47 PM

Thanks chaps for 1) I have exactly Andys' settings on my work computer just that at home I've got manually manage set (as there's more than 16gig to sync) when I sync at work I get the erase or cancel message. Shall try cpfc121's method tomorrow.

2) Hmm no A2DP yet, I naively assumed it would have it. Why would Apple not implement it ?

I believe that the bluetooth stack isn't up to it yet, I'd be fairly confident they will implement it at some stage.

It's going to kill battery life.

I got my IPhone yesterday - signed an 18 month contract and paid £59 extra for the 16gb model.

It's great fun - but boy am I frustrated trying to get movies onto it. I would have thought that a modern, top of the range, media device like this would be able to cope with a DivX encoded file without any problem .... but no. I am having to convert all my movie files to IPod compatible MP4 format before ITunes will let me load them into the device.

It's also frustrating not to have a simple 'drag and drop' facility. Why does every file have to go via the ITunes setup?

If you got it through your existing mobile company, you should have said you would leave if you never got it for free and you would have saved £59.

Is a commercial decision, if it supported Xvid then less people would buy from the Itunes store.

Here is a nice tip though, downloading from BBC Iplayer gives you nice high quality Quicktime files that your Iphone will love. Don't ask me how to download on a windows machine, I only know the Linux and Mac way.

Also, on my mac I can drag and drop films into itunes, not sure if this is possible in windows...

This seems to work - pressing cancel when the erase dialog box comes up and then sync although it does automatically uncheck the manual manage music checkbox so I just assume I'll have to be careful. Thanks for help.

Panorama - Terror in the Skies.mov: ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie

James 20-09-2008 08:57 AM

OK - I have had my IPhone for a few days now, and broadly I am happy with it, but there are a few niggles.

First, as I mentioned earlier, many common movie files (including DivX) are not recognised.

Secondly, there is no way of using the BBC 'Listen Again' service. There is a beta version of the BBC IPlayer, but that only works with a WiFi connection.

Third, many applications seem to crash. I recognise that this is probably the fault of the application authors, rather than the machine itself, but nevertheless it's frustrating.

Fourth, at times the IPhone seems sluggish, taking time to respond to a command (key press etc).

Fifth, no easy access to the drive (i.e. drag and drop). I installed the airsharing application - but I couldn't get this to work on Vista. Curiously, typing the IP address into my browser connected and showed a couple of folders on the IPhone - but no way to access them.

Ridcully 20-09-2008 09:39 AM

James, on the mac I connect to the iPhone through the windows equivalent of explored, is you map the ip address as a drive not browse it through a browser. On the iPhone you can then just touch the folder to see what's inside it, works really well. You just drag and drop to the drive on the mac through browser and then point at the file on the iPhone. Any format the mac supports can then be used. So QuickTime files office and PDFs are all easily accessed.

Ridcully 20-09-2008 09:43 AM

OK - I have cracked it. It's a known problem with Vista, but easily solved by installing THIS file sharing update from Microsoft.

Yes - it was the first thing I did when I got home!

James 24-09-2008 03:12 PM

I wonder if one of you can help me?

So far, I have been using my IPhone touch using WiFi (because there is no 3g signal here in Ewhurst). However, I was in Woking last night, where there was a strong 3g signal - but using Safari was awful. I managed to get a single page loaded in about 5 minutes - and after that I was getting server not responding errors. I tried several WebSites (including the BBC, the BBS, Wikipedia and Amazon).

I checked that I was connected using 3g (I was) and tried switching off and on again a few times.

Am I missing something obvious?

Dave 24-09-2008 03:39 PM

Not very helpful but sometimes 3G may appear to have a strong signal when the reality is that it's very weak. This is compounded by 02s network.

In these scenarios it can be easier to switch to edge.

Dave 24-09-2008 03:49 PM

Is that a case of switching from O2-3g to just o2? I tried that and the speed was the same (i.e. non existent).

I believe there are third party apps that will allow you to stream live, these have the restriction of having to be be active in memory, so when using them you can't use anything else

Yopu can disable 3G in settings --> general --> network

James 25-09-2008 08:58 PM

I am SO tempted to Jailbreak my 3g - and have downloaded all the necessary files and guides ... but I am nervous. Has anyone here done this to a new 3g IPhone who could perhaps give me some confidence (or, conversely, persuade me not to do it)?

The Iphone is one of the most frustrating gadgets I have ever owned - so much potential constrained by hardware restrictions.

Dave 25-09-2008 09:00 PM

It's really unlikely to be bricked, the risk is that your data gets lost

James 25-09-2008 09:11 PM

Surely not if I back it all up first?

Dave 25-09-2008 09:19 PM

The risk is you can't restore from backup

James 26-09-2008 01:42 AM

Hmmm ...

I was going to do it tonight. I'm going to leave it until the morning.

Actually - I didn't mean hardware restrictions!

I meant Firmware restrictions. The hardware itself has it all - but it is hamstrung by a very restrictive Operating System.

I am intrigued by this James, you listed 5 problem areas on the last page, all but the first one are resolved I believe with subsequent firmware and application upgrades although there were some problems down to the choice of OS you use on your PC. What does it not do for you?

Divx support is always patchy anyway, it requires licensing to use corporately which is why so many avoid it. MKV I'd prefer personally but I think you'll need to get the Ugly phone to get 3rd party open source support for that.

The iPhone whilst not perfect beats the WM6 platform hands down from my experience. It will however be interesting to see what happens when they bring a decent G-Phone out.

I meant Firmware restrictions. The hardware itself has it all - but it is hamstrung by a very restrictive Operating System.

Good luck and do give us your views on how easy the process is and what its like afterwards (ie. what you can now run etc.)
