windows mobile is shit but symbian takes shitness to new, yet undiscovered levels.

If Nokia don't make some of their new phones work in 2009, we will be talking about them like now talk about palm...

Oliver V 01-01-2009 11:04 PM

Could anyone please explain what cellular network data means?

Dave 01-01-2009 11:05 PM

Internet access on a mobile phone

Oliver V 01-01-2009 11:08 PM

And can that include access from the wi-fi in our house?

Dave 01-01-2009 11:11 PM

No.

This is accessing the internet via 3G or gprs NOT wifi

Oliver V 01-01-2009 11:13 PM

And can I at all prevent the phone from accessing the internet by any other means but wifi?
I was under the impression that I was only using wifi for browsing and certain applications but now I'm not so sure.

If you have a UK phone and have cellular data off (roaming) then the only way you will be using applications or the internet is via wifi if you are not in the UK.

In the UK you would clearly be using 3G, Edge or GPRS. You can turn 3G off as well if you wanted to (eg. to save power) but you'd have to have Edge and GPRS enabled.

Oliver V 02-01-2009 12:20 AM

Thanks both of you, I found this website http://brent.kearneys.ca/2008/07/21/...ternet-access/, it's a quick read and if either of you could take a look and let me know if that will solve my problem I'd appreciate it.

Ridcully 02-01-2009 12:38 AM

Oliver easiest way to try is to switch off wifi and see if you can access the internet before the fix and after...

Oliver V 02-01-2009 01:35 AM

Alright got it now.

Thank you both I wouldn't have been happy with the already expensive bill I get on the contract they offer in this country.

So I have an iPhone in my possession with a 3G O2 Simplicity sim card all ready to go. Put the sim card in, having restored the phone, open iTunes. Now I am confronted with a message saying 'Waiting for activation. This may take some time'. Earlier I must have waited for about 4 hours. How long is this going to take??!! Is something wrong? The phone I have is second hand, might that be the issue?

Dave 07-01-2009 11:11 PM

could be anything up to 24 hours....

Of course it does!

My sister lives in Bangkok and uses Skype on her PC. She has never heard of Fring. I am able to talk to her (voice when using my wireless home network - text by Edge/3g) when she is logged into Skype.

Why don't you try it and see?

My new baby turned up this morning and I am pleased to confirm that restoring all my old data and setting transferred across as smoothly as you could possibly hope for.

Interestingly the battery life appears infinately better than my old handset (on it since it arrived and still a full green bar) my sticky text delete key problem also appears to have gone away.

Happy me. :)

Just received an iphone on 02 £30.00 a month tariff, what I can't work out is if receiving and sending emails included in the tariff, anyone know?

Thanks

Ecalap Latsyrc 14-01-2009 02:00 PM

It is included - counts as data.

I'm going to have to cave and get a case of some sort, already got nasty scratches in the plastic after less than a month. Preferably something grippier than the gloss plastic as I keep dropping it on concrete.

They must have improved the battery is all I can say. I continued using the phone to browse most of last night, then intentially didn't charge it, have made and received a dozen calls today plus a couple of hours of browsing and has finally warned me that only 20% of the battery remains.

My old phone wouldn't have made it through last night. :)

Nightmare!

Only had the phone for a month and it's decided it doesn't want to send text messages anymore.

Done a full restore and everything that o2/Apple have told me to. Still won't work.

Seems to be quite a widespread problem having done a google search. There is a fairly long thread on the o2 forums about it...

http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?...er=asc&start=0

The woman I phoned at o2 said I should send the phone off for repair but that could take ages for the phone to come back to me. I'm going to take it into the Apple shop on Regents Street tomorrow and hope they give me a new one... really don't fancy waiting for the best part of a month for them to repair it or decide to send me a new one.

Dave 14-01-2009 08:15 PM

The useless woman at o2 said up to three weeks.

To be honest even 10 days is too long. I really hope the apple store give me a new one tomorrow.

Dave 14-01-2009 08:26 PM

If you bought from 02 why would Apple exchange it?

richdeniro 14-01-2009 08:28 PM

Not sure if it's the case in the UK, but over here Apple are generally pretty good with replacing their own products, even if you bought them from somewhere else.

Does anyone know if, having gone and bought an 8gb iPhone, you can 6 months later go and exchange it for a 16gb one instead (at a cost, of course!)?

Pretty much what the guy I spoke to in the Regent Street store said today.

However got to go through the motions and have an appointment with of their in-store "Genius's" tomorrow before they'll give me a new one.

I think you will find that they were willing to do that as you were upgrading from 2G to 3G, not because you wanted to go from 8 to 16Gb.

:)

Dave 16-01-2009 10:16 AM

Oh - I thought that was what he was asking.

yeah - they won't let you upgrade a 3g to a bigger disk

Had my appointment with the 'Genius' in the Apple shop today.

He spent 10 mins doing some diognostic stuff with the phone and told me the problem is quite widespread. Sent a load of data to Apple from my phone and then gave me a new one. I didn't even have to show a receipt or anything.

Was pretty impressed with the service.

From my experience, Apple actually seem to keep a record of all the products they produce, even if they are sold through a third party. As long as you're within warranty, they'll fix it.

One of the better companies out there, me thinks.

Using your finger and thumb to stretch is better, imvho

Yes - as Dave says, the trick is to 'stretch' the picture by putting your thumb and forefinger on the screen and widening or narrowing.

I didn't know about this for a while after I got my IPhone, and like you was frustrated by the tapping to enlarge feature. This doesn't work very well - and of course will only enlarge to a fixed size. By stretching the image, you can resize by any factor.

Thanks Dave and James :)

Kevin T 21-01-2009 02:12 PM

I'm due an upgrade in March. All things are pointing to an Iphone. I love the look of email and browsing is ace.

But the camera is really holding me back. I have a SE 5MP camera phone at the moment, and don't use a seperate digital camera. The 2MP camera, lack of picture messaging and no flash is really making me think twice.

Dave 21-01-2009 02:19 PM

You don't care there is no drinks holder when driving a Ferrari

Kevin T 21-01-2009 02:24 PM

You might care if there was no back seat if you were looking for a family car.

James 21-01-2009 02:26 PM

They really shouldn't have bothered to put a camera in the IPhone. It's almost useless - and compares starkly with (most) of the other excellent features in the Phone. If a good camera is important to you, then go for something else - or simply carry a dedicated camera in addition.

I wouldn't be without the IPhone. I have had a number of leading edge mobiles before, and none has come close to rivaling this marvellous bit of kit. If you do go for it, I know that you won't regret it.

Oh, and there are drinks holders in Ferraris.

I don't take photos to send to people. I take them to keep. Every single photo I've ever taken of James has been with a Sony Ericsson Cybershot.

But.... the music player software is crap on an SE as is the message viewing software. It would be nice if someone would bring out a phone that was all things to all men. If I go for an iPhone, I have to go out an buy a digital camera as well. Which I will never have on me when I want to take a photo, so it's pointless.

joe walker 21-01-2009 07:11 PM

I got one of these for Christmas (16GB 3G) and I love it!
Although...
My relationship with the auto-correction system on the keyboard is let's say bittersweet!
The ipod doesn't have a sleep facility
The camera doesn't have a flash or video function

Besides that though I do enjoy it thoroughly. The helicopter game application at 80p or something is a gift from God!

In danger of going a bit off topic, I had this very dilemna before I got my iphone, the camera was bothering me because of the photos of the kids, and was glad to have taken the plunge. Instead of then having the phone/camera problem, I decided that the videos I had of my kids were rubbish as they were being taken on our old stand-alone digital camera. So instead I got an iphone and a separate camera/HD camcorder. Only £150 for a 10mp camera that does 720p HD videos, pocket sized too. Decided that this would serve me better than the phone option. The iPhone camera is good enough for casual pics you're not going to keep though.

And I am now an iPhone bore - I love it and can't believe I ever doubted getting one

Kevin T 21-01-2009 07:29 PM

Quote:

During Apple's earnings conference call yesterday, Apple COO Tim Cook fielded a wide variety of questions, but two answers in particular helped shed a bit of light on the likelihood that Apple would enter the netbook market or release a lower end iPhone.

iPhone Nano

The origins of a rumored iPhone Nano stretch back to July 2007 when a JP Morgan analyst essentially made it up out of thin air (citing "sources" in the supply channel). Since then, other analysts have chimed in and noted that if Apple truly wants to garner significant market share in the smartphone market, it needs to offer a variety of iPhone models at different price points.

Over the past few months, rumors about a cheap iPhone Nano have taken various forms. Some predicted an iPhone with a smaller screen, while others speculated that Apple would release an iPhone Nano with limited functionality (i.e, no access to the App Store). Adding fuel to the flames of speculation were case renderings for an iPhone Nano like device that were recently posted online by case manufacturers.

Tim Cook, however, squashed any notion of an iPhone Nano at Apple's conference call. In response to a question about iPhone pricing, Cook stressed that Apple will not be producing low-end phones, and that Apple has no desire to be the market leader in terms of units sold. Instead, Cook emphasized that Apple will continue to focus on building the "world's best phone."
