If you are connected to WiFi, it won't use your allowance at all. Away from WiFi however, and your Phone will use the 3g data and the amount will obviously depend upon what you are using your Phone to do.

Browsing the web (i.e. reading the BBS) will use a small fraction of your allowance, as will using Google maps, checking stock prices or the weather etc. Streaming from the Radio will use a bit more - around 1 or 2 MB per minute. Your 500MB would give you several hours listening to a streaming radio station (more or less depending upon the quality).

Video uses bandwidth fast. Again, there is no precise measure, because it depends upon the quality. HD video uses many times the bandwidth of standard video. Your data allowance won't last long if you spend much time on TV Catchup and/or watching YouTube videos without a WiFi connection.

Help please.

I'm after a lead that will Connect my iPhone 4 and iPad2 (that I intend to get shortly) to a tv and transfer videos and play sound. The video as it stands is on YouTube but hope to be able to save it to my iPhone/iPad or failing that play direct from YouTube.

Any recommended links would be great. It's for a wedding speech i have to do and to project pictures.

I have looked on amazon but varied reviews on some that say some advertised don't do as they say so need to know the one I get works for both video and sound and also for both iphone4 and ipad2.

TIA

Buy an appleTV and you can send videos and music direct to the tellybox

And it's only 85 pounds - not much more expensive than a cable

Query for people on 3 One Plan contracts: Why does the My3 page for my account show the amount of available Internet allowance for the month when the One Plan comes with "all you can eat data"? Surely that means my allowance is unlimited?

Is there a distinction between data obtained over wifi and 3G?

I reckon iPad 3 in March, iPhone 5 later in the year. Apple have never had such a short release cycle between phones before.

Adlerhorst 08-12-2011 08:22 PM

yep, that's my guess as well.

Hopefully they will have restocked the iPad by May when I hit the states next (assuming they have a vastly improved display - if not not bothering).

Chris Finch 13-12-2011 10:17 PM

Can anybody recommend insurance for the iphone 4s?

Just bought it on an 18 month contract with o2

Considering getting Barclaycard Insurance for 6.99 per month

Thanks

keithywonder 13-12-2011 10:20 PM

Should it not be covered on your house insurance?

Chris Finch 13-12-2011 10:22 PM

Oh and to add more pointless context to my mobile phone life....

Been on o2 simplicity since April 2008

Paying 21 per month for;

600mins
Unlimited text
Free o2 to o2 calls
Could cancel anytime after 30 days (rolling contract)
Been using a crappy Nokia for years but now need emails on the go

Now paying
41 per month for 18 months for

500 minutes
Unlimited texts
Unlimited o2 to o2
1gb internet

Plus got to pay 29 upfront for a 16gb Iphone 4s

Advice as to whether people think that is worth it??

Over last 3 years I have averaged 300 mins per month (main number I call is an o2 number)

Cheers

If you can afford to replace said phone when it is lost, stolen or breaks then don't get the insurance.

Insuring things you can afford to replace is a mug's game.

If the phone was dropped down the toilet after 1 month, I would have to shell out 499.99 for a new one from Apple.

If I was to drop it down the toilet after 1 month and had insurance, I would have paid 6.99 plus a 50 excess.

Insurance makes sense with iphones for me, though I agree with the sentiment about over-insuring.

How many times have you dropped a phone down the toilet?

Zero

I have had the same phone for the last 4 years

Why didnt you just keep the simplicity going and buy the phone outright? Cheaper in the long run.

21 simplicity plus 1gb of internet would have cost me 31 per month

31 x 18 = 558 plus 499 from Apple for the phone = 1057
(appreciate eBay would be say 100 cheaper? If you buy off eBay it is harder to get insurance/less comeback if phone defaults)

41 x 18 = 738 plus 29 = 767, and it is easier to get it insured

So taking the contract makes it 290/190 (eBay adjustment) cheaper?

I still have 14 days to cancel after I receive hence me asking for advice here.
Judging by the backlog, not gonna get it for 7 days or so anyway!

My iphone battery seems to be deminishing quicker than normal past couple of days. I dont have wifi and location services on by default as I know this hinders performance.

But is there anyway of seeing what is running and using battery on it??

greybot 14-12-2011 03:11 PM

Double click home and see what is running in the background, then close everything you aren't using.

Also put brightness as low as possible when you aren't using it.

Turning off 3g when you aren't using it is also helps save battery, but admittedly is a pain going in and out of settings to do so.

Sbsettings which previously was only for jailbroken iphones is now available for non-jailbroken iphones and let's you toggle stuff on and off with icons, without having to go through settings.

Everything on my iphone comes up. How do i close them? As there is no close option to get out of an app??

greybot 14-12-2011 03:18 PM

Hold your finger on the icon to make it wobble and a little red icon will appear on it. Click that to close it.

It's a pain to go through them all but on jailbroken phones you can do it with one click using removeBG and killbackground which are cydia tweaks.

I couldn't survive on 1gb internet per month. I use Sky Player on 3g all the time - as well as streaming Internet Radio.

GiffGaff is fairly good - offering unlimited Internet for a low monthly fee - but you would have to buy the iPhone separately. That's why I use the Three Network.

Buying on the One Plan (40 per month) you get:

2,000 minutes
5,000 texts
All-you-can-eat data

and pay a one off fee of 49.00

or if you prefer, a one-off fee of 99, and just 35 per month.

One real benefit of the One Plan is tethering. You can use the iPhone as a WiFi hotspot when on the road, and tether your iPad or Laptop at no additional cost. Also, the AYCE data is expressly unlimited and not subject to any fair use policy. last month, I downloaded over 20GB.

True but giff gaff give you more free minutes for your buck and unlimited 3g on monthly contracts, so I can change depending on my usage. Sype keeps my international calls cheap or free and for all that I pay 10 a month. :p

It doesn't stop notifications. Just stops apps opening to where they last were opened (which uses more RAM and drains battery more).

The more notifications you turn off the more battery you will get too

Do you mind posting up what exact allowance you receive and pay?

Thanks James also for the info on 3, I wouldn't go over the minutes or text allowances so makes more sense to get unlimited 3g!

Cheers

greybot 14-12-2011 04:29 PM

250 free uk minutes, unlimited internet, unlimited texts, free to giffgaff calls for 10 a month.

Next one up is same as above but with 150 extra uk minutes for 15.

I have a fiver emergency in case I forget to top up but you can buy these packages in advance and am sorted up to end of February now so will have no downtime with 3g, free calls, free texts.

Have to own your phone but the savings from not being on a contract with someone else for a lot less of a deal, is well worth it.

More info here:

Its crazy, they design a phone with so many capabilities, but they can't even get the battery to last more than 24 hours if you use just some of those capabilities.

And when you look on Apple for advice on battery life, they basically say turn everything off and don't use applications. Whats the point in having them??

Yesterday, I unplugged in the morning about 7.30 and when I went to bed had about 8% battery left. I'm at work all day so hardly use it.

Yesterday I unplugged at 7:30, at 8 at the train station (3G) looked at twitter for about 5 minutes, and when my train came in at 8:06 I had 79% battery. It's ridiculous, has got significantly worse in the last two weeks or so though.

Why are you paying 31 a month o2's simplicity is 15 a month isnt it? though the data isnt great I doubt you would use that much, if you do then go with 3

If you go with 3

300 minutes and 3000 texts 15 1GB Internet (if you believe James and others 3 really have upped their game in fact they use the o2 network dont they?)

18x 15 = 270 + 499 phone = 769

The beauty is you dont need insurance as if you lose your phone just sign a contract and get one!

There must be some significant variation in the battery lives of iPhones then. My current iphone 4 is 18 months old, has everything switched on, l use it for browsing, using apps, photo's, videos etc regularly every day yet I only need to charge it every two days. Weird.

No one else answered it, but on checking my last bill, even though I "exceeded" the data allowance, I was not charged for data use, so thanks for providing the explanation.

My battery life is fine, incidentally, I usually charge it every other night, unless I've used it a lot during the day, in which case I charge it every night. Not a problem to plug it in overnight, is it?

If that's the case then fair play to you, my iPhone 4 will be a year old in March.
I arrive at work around 8am with my phone at 100% every morning as I charge it in the evenings.
I don't get either 3G or WiFi at work, have the brightness turned down to slightly below half way, and only really send texts, maybe make a few calls at lunch etc, check my emails and play the odd game here and there.

By the time I get home at say 6:45 it is down to below 40% everyday, there is no way on earth I could charge it just once every 2 days.

That would drive me nuts! My usage is massively more than that yet still only charge the phone every other night. Mrs Blind's 3GS, which admittedly gets far less use than mine, frequently goes three - four days between charges.

gone with Orange. When I tried to get my PAC off O2 they came up with a better deal. No cooling off period with Orange which is a bit weird in this consumer protected world but I think their coverage is probably better anyway

Anyone else with a 4s having bluetooth troubles?

Mine will not recognise any bluetooth devise. It's forever looking for devices to connect to

Dave 06-01-2012 03:04 PM

No

kolinkins 09-01-2012 02:46 PM

Thanks Dave.

So, I went to Apple and my Jawbone, which has been excellent thus far, didn't work with any iPhone 4s or iPad 2.

Rang Jawbone and they said there will be no software release to fix this.

So now this 60 bit of (excellent) kit is to be wasted!

James 09-01-2012 04:27 PM

I have had a quick look on the Internet and people do seem to be able to pair the iPhone 4s with jawbone. I honestly don't want to seem rude, but are you sure you have been doing it properly? Here's a tutorial:

Also, HERE is a post from someone who may have had the same problem as you - who seems to have sorted it.

If your 4s isn't recognising ANY blue-tooth devices, then obviously there would seem to be something wrong with your iPhone.

Good luck!

kolinkins 09-01-2012 04:29 PM

James, I have tried it all - and properly. In the Apple shop, it wouldn't pair with any Apple device and two of their employees tried it too with their phones and it didn't work!

Having used it for a year or so with my 3Gs, I do know how it works

Rude mod.

Sorry - but I did apologise in advance in case I was patronising you.

Did you look at THIS?

kolinkins 09-01-2012 04:31 PM

I forgive you grandpa.

James 09-01-2012 04:32 PM

Did you look at THIS sonny?

kolinkins 09-01-2012 04:33 PM

Yes you put it in the first post - getting forgetful?

James 09-01-2012 04:34 PM

To reset and re-pair your Jawbone, perform the steps listed below:

1. Turn off the Bluetooth on your phone.
2. Delete any existing Bluetooth profile for the Jawbone from your phone.
3. Press the Reset Button on the Jawbone for three seconds by inserting the metal end of the earloop in the Reset hole (the center charging slot on the tip of the Noise Shield Button).
4. Re-pair the Jawbone with your phone according to the instructions in your Jawbone User’s Guide. You may download the User’s Guide from our website at http://www.jawbone.com/support_usermanual_us.php.

Have you done all that?

if not, and it works, will you aplogise to me?

James 09-01-2012 05:01 PM

I take it that it worked then?

kolinkins 09-01-2012 05:03 PM

No James, it didn't - I tried it yesterday.

James 09-01-2012 05:06 PM

Oh ****.

Try it again.

Barbara4003 09-01-2012 05:07 PM

What on earth is Jawbone (apart from the obvious bone in your jaw)?

I have the 4S on Orange. Must admit I'm disappointed with the 3G Coverage. Heard from everyone that it was excellent but seems to be worse than O2 !! I don't suppose there's a setting I'm missing by any chance is there that's making it sub optimal (I have 3G and x number of bars but no internet) :(

Are you new to the iPhone? How many internet using apps do you have in 'stasis' double click the home button to reveal these they list from left to right in order of use so close all you dont need open from the right hand side by holding one for a second or two til they wobble and then tapping the x.

you should turn your phone off every now and then too

A quick question.

I have recently downgraded my contract to a bare minimum - I think I get 100 minutes and 100 texts (which is more than enough). I do most of my browsing, data stuff at home and my Wifi picks that up.

I want to completely prevent any 'accidental' data access while I'm out and about. Bar not accessing Safari/etc, are there any settings I can change that will lock all that out except when I'm at home?

kolinkins 25-01-2012 11:59 AM

Settings - General - Network and switch Mobile Data off.]

Every time you go out.

Dave 25-01-2012 12:01 PM

madness

Scrumpy 25-01-2012 12:02 PM

You can leave "mobile data" switched off permanently and still be able access wifi.
