Questions:
1: Do you love or hate the software keyboard? 2: Do you find it generally fast and responsive? 3: Is there any way to download podcasts without using a PC or MAC i.e direct to the device? Ta |
I dont have the iphone but have the ipod touch.
To download podcasts to either of them you have to jailbreak your iphone or ipod touch .Then you can install an application which is supposed to let it do it for you. http://www.maccast.com/2007/12/27/do...th-mobilecast/ That above might sort you out. Other than that I have found a website for the ipod touch that has all the bbc podcasts on them. You can then using wifi download to your ipod touch.Once loaded you can disconnect from the wifi and listen to the podcast but you cannot save it. |
Can i hi-jack this thread?
Too late :D, i want to know, Is it worth it? I want to buy the iPhone mainly because i need a new iPod and i was going to get the iTouch 8gb (£199), but i thought, 'im bored of my phone i want a new one'. The iPhone (£269) has a 8gb iPod built in, i don't want to spend the same amount on the iTouch 16gb, i might as well get the Phone for the same amount of money. BUT! Mates and family have been telling me the Phone's not worth the £269 and i should get the 16gb iTouch and get a contract phone where the handset is free and get a better pay monthly rate (e.g. Viewty etc, something with a touch screen, because, lets be honest, the £35 a month tariff on the iPhone is only for 200 mins and 200 texts. OK! Got a bit carried away there with figures and facts, bottom line is: Do i get the,
Arggghhhh soooooo many choices! Help :( |
I wouldnt bother with the 8gb touch.I have a 16gb and what with films music and photos I already have to pick and choose what I put on it.It is a nice bit of kit to use but go for the 16gb if anything.
Vodafone have a Samsung f700 going for free at the moment on 30quid a month contracts but I do know that the 02 contract on the iphone is unlimited internet on it. Films and music videos really do look good on the touch though. |
jp i have the viewty and it's nothing special, wish i'd stuck with sonyericcssons, they're much better
|
dave, if the touch keyboard is anything like the viewty, which i think it is, then it's a nightmare and should be avoided

I have been deciding to buy the iphone or not and jailbreak it as i would want to use my simplicity tarrif and get the o2 web addon as it would make the tariff far more appealing. As you "buy" the phone i dont see the need for o2 to make you to take out a contract stupid marketing malarky. |

TBH I was looking for opinions of people who actually had an Iphone |

You not waiting for a 3G model Dave?

No native support for rss sucks.
No dynamic updating of calendars suck. Does anyone else have problems using the zoom in safari? |
What are the data speeds like on EDGE? I was hoping MWSF would herald a 3G iPhone but alas no.
|
the iphone is crap, end of
|
I've been setting one of these up for a client. It's lump of turd, IMO.
Horrible keyboard & horribly slow. Not very inuitive or user-friendly when you need to alter settings and basically he just wants it mainly for the phone, ipod and an occasional bit of 'net. He doesn't want it to do anything particualrly clever. |
Ive got the blackberry pearl 8120, everything an iphone does it does, just better!

The good thing is that you can set up the route at home and even without internet access while on the move as long as you stick to the same route it will get you there as it saves journeys into the memory. |

Web browsing on blackerry is beyond shit and there aren't many 8Gb Blackberrys

Try viewing the BBS on a blackberry - horrid. I actually enjoy the bbs on a mobile device for the first time ever - stretching the screen is so cool.
|
Sorry for all the questions Dave, but is yours on O2 or have you jailbroken it to work on another network?
|
I'm on 02 - I won't be jailbreaking mine
|
The keyboard takes getting used to, but is neat once you've used it for a bit. The only problem with it is not being able to type whilst not looking at the phone. On normal mobiles, you can feel your way around the buttons and just glance down every so often to make sure what you are typing looks ok, you can't do that on the iphone.

Not on an Iphone, which is my point
|
So in total you will have paid roughly a grand+, to browse the internet nicely?

Seems fair to me |

Shame the rest of it was so shit. :( |
I'm loving the email client and can do two finger typing - its a smashing piece of kit
|
When can we expect the next gen iPhone? I think I may hold out for that...
|
What sepcidically do you want in the next gen? More disk space? 3G? GPS?
I just want them to keep developing the software - so much potential there. I even like the youtube application |
I installed the new update - 1.1.3 - this morning. It has destroyed my iPhone. It will not upgrade, and wants me to restore it to factory settings, which it then won't let me do. Am trawling through maccy forums to see how to fix it. This is a new unhacked iPhone and I am disgruntled. Lots of people are having this problem, it seems.
First problem I've had with it though and until now have been loving it. The minority report pinchy stretchy thing is both aces and cool. |
:(
1.1.3 works fine for me |

Various solutions include total reinstalls of iTunes, restoring the phone on another computer, and basically a whole lot of hassle. Not good. Are you enjoying the map enhancements? |
I don't use the maps - I have a phone with real GPS too :)
|
lookin to get one of these in a months time but could do with some advice....
does an unlocked iphones features still work as a legit one would?(youtube, maps, itunes updates etc.) will a new updated version of the iphone be released within 18 months? (encase i sign to O2) and what sort of battery life do you get out of yours? |
Batter life is pretty good although I charge most nights
No clue about the other questions |
cheers dave, although i think i'll just go for an o2 contract now.
been reading a bit about the unlocked ones and i think they pick up faults after updates etc. only thing that worries me about o2 is the tariff and signal strength. |
The tariff has just been doubled.
Signal strength is much improved these days. FWIW I haven't even considered unlocking my phone |
Quote:
They are opening it up to third party developers so they can design more applications, and Apple will then approve some of them. Battery life is fine but if you are online a lot it drains much faster. They just announced a 16 gig version. The nice thing is that when they put out an update, you get any new features it has. So your phone will keep improving. As Dave says, they just made the contract twice as generous, and you have unlimited data online so don;t have to worry. |
Thanks for your help dave and micky.
I think i'll play it safe (and simple) by choosing the o2 option. looks like an excellent phone, and i need to get a new ipod with more memory anyway. only using a 2gb ipod,so having to delete files everytime i download music. perfect combo for what i'm after at the moment! Hopefully i wont be disappointed..... |
I guarantee you won't
|
Rumours of an imminent price drop and perhaps a move to 3G on www.macrumors.com

3G wouldn't incentivise me to upgrade if was to cost and it certainly wouldn't stop me buying an Iphone now.
GPRS is fast enough for email and web browsing so unless they are going to offer IM or streaming then I can't leave it. edit: In fact IM wouldn't need 3G |
|
|
Just got the 16gb version and managed to unlock it in about 5 mins using some free software.
Very impressed! |
the keyboard on my touch is a beauty, it's easily the most acccurate touch device I've ever used. I was doign a fair bit of typing on it today and didn;t have any problems
|
Beauty. Best phone on the market.

I got a 16GB iphone on tuesday, and am really pleased with it.
Only problem so far is connecting to the internet. Maybe i've missed something, but havent found anywhere to connect through wi-fi yet. So,so far i havent made full use of the phone (youtube, itunes etc.) but still really impressed! |

the problem is my home system is locked, and im not sure what password i'm meant to enter. i've tried entering the wep key,but no joy! can anyone spread some light? as soon as i suss that out,the phone becomes so much more appealing and usefull! |
I hear the latest upgrade to the iPhone will allow the keyboard to be horizontal as well as vertical, which should make typing easier.
Also they will be more business orientated, i.e. you can use Word and Excel. Disclaimer.... I don't have one, was just talking with a guy at work yesterday about his. I have to say I was impressed with what he was showing me.... but then again I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to this stuff.... my cell phone is 6 years old and doesn't even have a camera in it. |
The June revision rumours seem pretty strong.
Do people here think that we'll be seeing an update then? |
Quote:
i hope not,not yet anyway..... only got mine last week so i'll be a bit gutted. |
16GB nearly convinced me but I might as well wait until June.
|
That means four months at the very least with some rubbish phone.
Get one now |

I have a blackberry too and it's Ok for making calls and email as well as having GPS but an Iphone it ain't.
|
Agreed entirely - my ipod is six years old as well. :(

Can anyone help with this? Its really annoyin me now,as the wep key is all i can think of that i'm supposed to enter. Or is there any simple way of just unlocking my livebox instead? |
what about iPod touchs? I am getting an 8gb one from the states for £125, i sold my 30Gb video one on ebay for £70 because basically i will never use that space for music i actually want. i have a huge external harddrive and will basically chop and change a certain amount of songs, whilst keeping some must haves on there. im not really bothered about video, having had a video ipod for two years and only ever really watched a few episodes of lost on it.
the ipod touch just looks awesome, cant wait to get my hands on it. how does the wireless net work anyways? i mean, does it work well for browsing/sending emails? |
Quote:
For using the touch as a MP3 and video player it is quality. If you want to have it to check your email, browse a few webpages on the move then i would seriously consider getting the phone version instead imho. Is a very slick device i would consider getting if the contract plans where more competative with day to day pay monthly price plans :) |

WPA not WEP is the way to go but http://www.hackszine.com/blog/archiv...ep_networ.html |
OK, having said I would wait for the next generation of these to come out I am now sorely tempted to get one as my shite Nokia N95 has completely packed up for the second time in 11 months.
18 month contract. I'm not going to regret it am I? |
Nope
|
It will change ur life.
|
Only if your life wasnt that great to begin with.
|
Have had an iPhone for a day now - it is awesome.
Only slight niggle is the signal strength at home, it isn't as strong as my previous O2 phone and only picks up in the lounge. Hey ho, its definitely worth it though, just need to discover everything on it now! |
Just call 02, I think they are swapping out some units with lower strength signal
|
Can you play AVI files on the iphone?
|
Quote:
|
Correct.
|
iplayer for iPhone released
|
I wish I'd got one, the N95 8GB is a load of shit and now I'm stuck with it. Or am I? Can you buy yorself out of the contract? I also have an N80 in good nick, so the pair would realise a tidy sum on Ebay I guess.
anyone know? |
Who is the contract with?
|
Three.
:( |
Fook :(
No option other than paying up the whole contract then :( |
I think I'd probably break/lose it if I had one.
|
Home insurance
|
oh, and I don't want one.

it's too big & expensive.
my phone & mp3 player combined are smaller and with better battery life. That's all I need. |
Why are you posting inane chatter on this thread then? :)
|
it's what I do.
Anyways, I came on here to see if I could be persuaded, but nothing you've said has. Charging it every night? Madness! |
Quote:
Anyways, I don't think you really fit the Iphone demographic :) |
:(
actually I do. I am male, early 30s, uni educated and on above average income. And that who apple are aiming at. so there. and I'm an early adopter of new technology, just not in phones. |
He shoots.
He scores. |
gah :grrr:
at least I managed to resist your music snob bait the other week. |
I love my iPhone more than I love my wife. Although, I'm pretty sure she also loves it more than she loves me.
|
PM - having said I wouldn't get one I decided to take the plunge on Monday this week having had to put up with the Nokia N95 for the last 11 months - a shockingly bad phone.
Yes its expensive and I'm sure the novelty will wear off but the iPhone is an amazing piece of kit. I can't believe how good it is. I'm not regretting buying one at all so far and I'd be surprised if anyone was disappointed having purchased one. * * with my luck at the moment expect the touch screen to totally give up or apple to release the most amazing upgraded phone any day now. |
Seconded. It's the best gadget I've ever owned, bar none.
