No - but I had problems. Several of my paid-for applications stopped working for some reason and the IPhone kept crashing, so I have reinstated it for the time being.

One big triumph over the weekend however was successfully unlocking my T-Mobile USB 'Web and Walk' modem, using instructions found on the Web. The Sim Card from my IPhone 3g works fine with it, so I can use my new account with my Laptop and get the full 3g benefit.

Good news on the modem.

Bad news on the iphone, and it all sounds so simple according to the lifehacker instructions.

Dave 29-09-2008 07:53 AM

It's pretty easy

ozzieEagle 29-09-2008 08:31 AM

Viewty Airshare..... and 16gig microsd card and upwards capacity.

Hows your camera guys ?

Do you think the Iphone will actually catch up to the Viewty eventually ?

Just stirring, however the Iphone isnt the great leap forward that people seem to think.

Just in case anyone reading doesn't want to waste their money in a lemming like frenzy.... Heres some more Viewty Apps... pity about the gps but they are working on it.

http://www.mobileexpert.co.uk/mobile...-software.html

Oh and there are 64 gig Micro sd Cards on the Horizon, so you will be able to use this phone for a long long while.

Dave 29-09-2008 09:29 AM

I think it's good that there are lower end phones for people to cheap to get an Iphone.

ozzieEagle 29-09-2008 09:45 AM

I reckon the advertising Guru's have done a fantastic job with the Apple brand. It's amazing the kind of people they have sucked in.

No wonder people working in advertising get paid so well, they obviously push the right buttons.

The only thing lesser about the Viewty is the advertising revenue.

Now lets move on to Android eh ;)

Nonsense.

You don't buy a car because it has the largest engine,

The Iphone kicks the viewtys ass on a number of levels, including, but not limited to

* Styling
* Operating system
* Browsing experience
* Ipod experience
* Synchronisation
* App store

I thought this was the thread for iPhone users?

I always think there is something a bit desperate about people coming into forums/threads for Apple devices just to slag off an Apple device.

If the other devices are that good, then why such insecurity about the choice, which manifests itself in having to go look for Apple users to argue with?

I am simply offering an alternative, albeit in a theatre which doesnt want to believe.

Just evened up the playing field slightly, with some choices that most people didnt know about, specifically the myth that the Viewty only has 2gigs of memory.

LOL, I've a mobile account with two phones in my name, neither are mine. I worked out that for me, Mobiles equate to keeping me on a leash.

I do like tinkering with the phones in this household though :p

Islamic fundamentalists use that line, as well.

AndyStreet 29-09-2008 04:16 PM

I've used the Viewty a fair amount in the past. It has nothing on the iPhone in any sense other than the camera.

glaziers fan 29-09-2008 07:58 PM

how do i transfer contacts from iphone to another phone?

ie are they on the sim card automatically?

Dave 29-09-2008 08:00 PM

No, they are stored on the phone. When you backup your phone you can transfer to another phone.

The Mac also has the 'contacts' app, I can't speak for windowze

Anyone here done it yet?

Fring is now out on iPhone, MSN, Skype etc all included including free VOIP calls or use Skype out for cheap calls to friends over a wifi network.

Dave 05-10-2008 03:27 PM

I'm hugely wary of entering my IM details into any third party apps that aren't open source

BRILLIANT!! - It works! Finally, Skype on the iPhone.

It doesn't work with Skype out - but I have just had a conversation with my Sister in Bangkok using my iPhone. Thanks very much for pointing this out.

Risks with everything on the internet though, if you want VOIP without unlocking its the only available solution at the moment. I guess the only solace is its from the guy that used to be in charge at ICQ and has been steadily progressing the idea of Fring over the past year. It has an open source API available for add-ons which is why its proving popular.

As first to market it should get quite an advantage over the others. I'd recommend that passwords are unique for any apps to lessen risk.

Should work with Skype out, are you sure you've got credit?

Agree its a major step forward.

I have - but Skype out doesn't seem to work. Are you able to try it?

Dave 05-10-2008 04:02 PM

skype out works for me - serious lag though

It's also a funny with showing users online or not.

Dave 05-10-2008 04:03 PM

Apple will clean up when they release something that can run in memory - does fring run in memory on unlocked phones?

OK - I am trying to dial my home number - so I am using the keypad and dialling +441483 plus my number. When I press 'Skype Out' the application terminates. What am I doing wrong?

Dave 05-10-2008 04:11 PM

the number is wrong

Dave 05-10-2008 04:13 PM

It also appears that the skype text chat uses frings chat server not skype although calling works

It's still being lame with showing who is online

James 05-10-2008 04:14 PM

Every time I dial a number - I get an immediate 'Call Terminated' when I press 'Skype Out'.

My area code is 01483 - so what should I be dialling? On my PC, it's +441483 ....

James 05-10-2008 04:16 PM

It's a shame that this won't work on 3g. It's only on a WiFi connection I believe.

Dave 05-10-2008 04:17 PM

00441483....

James 05-10-2008 04:47 PM

Now I feel foolish.

It doesn't run in memory and terminates as it per Apple standards when closed so it should be OK. I read somewhere that Jobs doesn't have a problem with VOIP over wifi.

Caught me out too James.

To be honest its a bit of a pain in the arse as you have to either retype the numbers you have in your phone book to adjust. Would like to see a software improvement for this for local calling.

The point is until their is IM that can run in memory it's effectively pointless.

I'm fairly sure that is what apple will hold out for with Ichat, make it the only IM client that runs in memory in the background and they will clean up.

But what is the point if people can't skype you unless you are running fring?

I also have an issue with the call quality, the missing contacts in skype and the polling of skype's servers only every ten minutes (the last two are the same issue I guess).

It's a sucky user experience compared to the skype phone

But its the first and accepted by apple too, hopefully that means Skype can't be that far away.

My iPhone broke tonight :sob:

Despite no headphones being anywhere near it it still says they are, quite a common problem apparently but no matter how many times I plug in and unplug the headphones, no joy!!

Back to the Apple shop tomorrow for me.

I'm obviously not being clear, sorry.

Even if there is 100% official Skype client until such times as it can be run in the background it's pretty much useless.

Sorry to hear about your phone :(

No I did get what you meant and I think for a number of people the functionality (ie. memory residence) is critical but for others, like me, its not an issue. I can live with only being 'seen' when I am in the app. For me I prefer it that way to be honest as I find the whole IM thing pretty intrusive so to go online and use it to make a pre-arranged point to point call is fine.

I also completely agree with your other point too, ie. iChat will be the killer app in this space when Apple finally decide to break their own rules.

As for the phone, it has now fixed itself, no idea why but its working again after the 100+ time of plugging the bloody earphones in, it has cleared. I did a full restore too which may have helped. Ironic thing is its the first time I've used the official headphones tonight and after that it broke. Oh well at least it saves me the hassle of having to go near Bluewater (for which I am always grateful :D)
