Fring is brilliant. Dave is paranoid.

Dave 31-03-2009 09:05 AM

Skype are part of the same company as me.

In general I wouldn't share my IM details with third parties

James 31-03-2009 09:34 AM

Seriously - what is your concern?

I use Fring only for Skype. I have about £5 Skype credit (which has been there for months as I hardly ever use Skype out). If someone did get my password, surely the worse thing that could happen is that they could use that credit - and perhaps (if they are juveniles) make a few prank calls (or send messages) pretending to be me. How likely is that?

OK - I know that there is a remote possibility that my account could be hacked by some terrorist group and used to coordinate a dirty bomb attack on London, or by some organised paedophiles sharing information, which could result in an embarrassing knock at the door in the early hours, but that's a risk I am willing to take to use what I regard as one of the better Phone applications.

Dave 31-03-2009 09:40 AM

So basically you are saying is that because you don't use Skype for much then you are happy to give your details away.

I'm not in that position, I use skype for work.

Also if I were you I'd also read up on what Fring actually does to be able to proxy your chats and voice calls then you might be a little more concerned that some startup is decrypting your conversations.

James 31-03-2009 09:52 AM

I use Skype primarily for chatting to my Sister, who lives in Bangkok. I also use it occasionally for messaging (mainly Lizzy when she can't sleep; Kevin has gone to bed; and I am still up for some reason).

What should I be worried about? If I was concerned about my conversations being monitored, I wouldn't use Skpe at all. I would regard any IP communication to be basically insecure. If anyone really wanted to find out what is going on in my rather mundane world, they could bug my house or monitor my telephone. I assume however that I am relatively unlikely to be tapped as my conversations are by and large as dull as ditch water.

So - in simple terms, what should I be worried about?

Dave 31-03-2009 09:57 AM

I could care less if you are worried not.

I'm simply telling you that I'm not prepared to use fring.

It's not my job to educate anyone on why giving your login details to third parties is a dumb idea.

Fair enough.

Doing the latest updates in cydia makes skype stable :)

Blind_Eagle 03-04-2009 08:16 PM

The Skype app worked fine for me 'straight out of the box' so to speak.

Question for you guys, is there any way to visit the ITV site using an iPhone without it defaulting to their wank limited content mobile web site?

I've read and re-read your views on this Dave (because I respect them) and can only assume that you don't use the web commercially on a personal basis. Surely it is impossible to carry out any commercial transaction on the web without sharing IM details with third parties?

I can't think of any other time I have given a third party my login details

Dave 09-04-2009 04:58 PM

So, rumour is that the new Iphones will have 'n' chips which will allow them to act as FM transmitters for cars etc

GodstoneEagle 09-04-2009 05:04 PM

I can't get one for ages though I assume. Just looking forward to 3.0 in June

Dave 09-04-2009 05:10 PM

they will let us upgrade if we pay

Conger 09-04-2009 05:11 PM

WHen the new one is released, I along with a lot of others will presumably be in a rush to upgrade. Having only become a disciple of the Jesus phone on the latest 3G version, how much did O2 screw people to upgrade handsets while still mid-contract on the older version last time round?

Dave 09-04-2009 05:12 PM

I paid 150 quid

GodstoneEagle 10-04-2009 12:13 PM

I would do it if it had loads of better stuff. Not just an FM transmitter, doesn't really seem like a dealbreaker tbh. Would have to have a better camera amongst other things.

Niceaction 10-04-2009 12:18 PM

A move to 32 gig would get me paying £150 regardless of other things.

Dave 10-04-2009 02:07 PM

Agreed

Kevin T 10-04-2009 03:11 PM

I thought we can upgrade for £99 now? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

As for the FM transmitter, I'm sure it will be just as useless as the iTrip in London. I had a thought the other day while in the car wash. I wonder if I took my antenna off the roof (as I had just done for the carwash), it would block out enough of the weak pirate signals in London to allow a better sound with the iTrip.

And thirded on the 32GB point.
