Heb - just about to take the plunge ! Have never had a mobile before since I've always used a work one - but just about to leave and have a crack at 'going it alone' ! From all my research I think I'm going to go for the 24 months 34.26pm contract. Seems to include 600mins and 500 texts. Can't see me using more than that ! Also (allegedly) the email and unlimited surfing the net is included. Basically I will be using it for (excluding any cool Apps yet to be discovered !!), keeping in touch with email, texting sports scores, the odd call with Mrs EJ and the biggest thing, surfing the BBS !! Presumably (assuming I stay in the UK) this should all be within the 34.26pm ? (presumably its a bit more expensive if you go abroad - I'll cross that bridge later !!) Also, interested to hear what you were saying about the battery since that was a worry. I was also planning on watching bit of movies on the train instead of reading a newspaper !! Very excited but all comments very welcome !! Cheers Jez :) |
You won't regret it dude! I only went for 18 months, but all personal choice. I imagine I'll be wanted to upgrade to the new apple one when it comes out, which will probably be within 18 months, so that was why!
Quite simply, the iPhone is out of this world. I'm stunned (and my work phone is a not too shabby Touch HD, so it's not like I was using a piece of shit before, but the iPhone is miles better). Battery life, I really would recommend running it down to nothing when you get it (it comes 60% charged) and then charging to full, and running down to nothing, and charging to full. Then let it run down and charge to full once a month. Battery life isn't great, but a large reason for this is you simply can't put it down! It will do you fine to watch movies to and from work though. You just need to charge it each night is all. People who have had them longer will have more tips than me I reckon. I bought mine from the apple store in regents street and was far happier with the customer service than I've ever been in a mobile phone shop if that helps. The apps thread will have better tips than mine no doubt, but from the first few days the apps I've found best are google (just talk what you want it to search for, works quite well), facebook, tube delux, London bus/rail/tube planner, national rail, 2 Across (fantastic crossword app), movies, tv guide, around me, skype, joost, wunderradio, and for games real racing, rolando, blocked, bejewelled and peggle have all been fun :) Hope this helps! |

Interesting article on battery life. Seems the battery gets better with use, which is why my phone seemed worse at first then it does now.
Also, I've learnt that the 3GS has significantly improved wifi time (9 hours over 6 apparently) so when I'm using it at home more it is going to last longer! http://www.theipodbatteryunplugged.com/ |
Off to America in a couple of weeks and want to take my trusty iphone with me. Obv only gonna really use it for the odd text cos don't wanna get smashed with major bills! Any advice on if i need to do anything to stop myself being charged major bucks while im out there?

Turn off data roaming. Annoyingly you can't even get a pay as you go on a US iPhone carrier like AT&T while you're there :grrr:

Try this app for texting
http://www.bitesms.com/ If you buy credits off of them your texts will only cost 5p each. Use skype to make phone calls and you're sorted :p |
