Worked fine for me - no trouble - just update via iTunes

Can someone tell me if "backing up..." should be taking this long? It's been going for a good hour or so now. I've read that it seems to be normal, but I'm wondering if anything is even happening.

I've a 32gb 4g and it took backing up took ages, maybe 2 hours or so. I'm thinking it was because it was more or less full to capacity with photos and music.

That's what I don't understand. I have the 16GB, with barely anything on it! Maybe 2Gb taken max :(

Also, while its "backing up", what should be on my iphone screen? Because there is no sync in progress or anything, I can use it like normal.

From what i remember i also had this. Normally when i connected it to Itunes it said 'Syching' but when doing the software update it didn't say this. I just left the phone alone and let it do it's thing.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I was worried that it was all going to be for nothing. Will leave it be and check on it later.

Hmm, really weird. Felt something was wrong, so I stopped everything, restarted laptop, starting process again, and everything was updated in about 20 mins!

The iphone does seem a tad slower though.

I tried signing into the icloud thingy and it said there was some error, so i just skipped it.

Seems ok so far.

No, it's not normal, even if this is a first backup.

If this happens, close iTunes and reboot your iPhone by turning it off and on again. If it won't shut down, force it to do so by holding both the home button and the on/off button together. You need to restart the iPhone, otherwise you will get an error when you try to sync the device again.

The backup shouldn't take any longer than 5 minutes at the outside.

After the update how do I stop my email from downloading all my old emails all the time?! Getting on my tits! I've read them all as they were from months ago but it keeps downloading them after I've deleted some

Under advance settings, have you checked 'delete from server when removed from Inbox'?

Thanks James, this is exactly what I ended up doing, just gave everything a restart, and it was all done quick time after that.

And I never knew that about the email setting either, gonna change that now. Good stuff.

I have no idea whether this is connected to the latest IOS 5 update but in the last 24 hours I now cannot hear the other person during a phone conversation yet they can hear me. If I put it on loudspeaker that works fine but if I take it off it is completely silent. I've tried using the volume buttons on the side while making a call but this does nothing.

Should I restore the factory settings or look to get it repaired? Having a quick trawl through other sites it does seem a fairly common problem which either requires repair or a replacement phone.

Sorry if this has been brought up before but I'm not able to go through the whole thread.

Settings, Mail, Choose your account, change mail days to sync to 1 day.

Since updating my iphone to iOS 5 it has been shite. All of the covers on my apps have been greyed out

:(

Nope, ill delete 30 odd messages from say june, then come out of mail, then go back in nd it will then download another 30 from the previous few days of the ones i just deleted :(

Getting pissed off with it now

James 21-10-2011 09:59 PM

Check if the messages are still on the server. Use something like mail2web.com and check there. If they are, delete them.

I do however wonder whether the messages are not on the server (i.e. are not being re-downloaded) but are still in your iPhone's memory somewhere, because they haven't been deleted. Do they just reappear - or can you see them being downloaded? This is a known problem with some iPhones.

It basically sounds like iOS 5 is wank

I don't think I'll bother for the sake of some random notification centre. J actually quite like the way they pop up now anyway

Well that has been a nightmare :grrr:

My apple I'd has magically changed from isle of wight to my 8 year old sons email address . Apple have no idea how this happened and can't change it back or even change it to my email address. It juts picked one of the linked iTunes email addresses so that I have all the benefits of this "Cloud" bollocks.
I still can't download apps or music direct to my phone as the apple servers are now under attack, so they say, and the change of password hasn't updated yet.
All in all a week of emailing and phoning and they still can't help or tell me what went wrong. They did say they had been inundated with call on IOS5 and it had been appalling.
