I too suffer as do many other contributors.

Because we had our youngest two kids later in life, with our youngest being born when my wife was 41 it's meant that we've been child-rearing for most of our married lives. Anyway finally, like finally, my youngest moved out about a week at age 24.

Meantime my second youngest has been living with us whilst her and her partner have a house built, so we've got them here for the next year at least. They've gone away for a holiday, we are alone in our place at last. Which means we can wear, say, and do what we like without any feedback, positive or negative from our offspring, a very rare thing for us....As we've been child rearing since 1983.

Anyway, we were supposedly going to a local gig tonight, got tickets the lot. This morning my missus gets an emergency call from my 2nd oldest daughter re having to child care our only grandchild... So one of the few nights we can spend together on our lonesome is thwarted again.

Not only that, the 2nd oldest daughter is coming to our place, with our Grandson on Sunday for two days.... So much for the first few days of being together on our own in decades. My youngest daughter comes back on Wednesday. We got one night alone in our own home for the first time in about 40 years!!

We have to leave our place to get time to ourselves... Gotta say it absolutely pisses me off. Especially as I have a hankering to walk about my place without clothes... just from the bathroom to the bedroom for xsakes!!

We moved to the coast several years back. Just now my wife spends 30% of her time helping my daughter out in Santiago with the grandkids. And that doesn't include the time they spend here.

I've met full time campervan traveller women here, that have openly admitted they did that to get away from grandparent duty, or they would be doing it full time they reckoned. How common that is I dont know, but it's definitely a thing.

I have certainly read stories of UK and US women absolutely refusing to be used as 'carer' grandmothers. To the indignation of the parents - the story usually goes along the lines of 'but we both work, how could you be so selfish'.

Somehow, I think a certain couple of got their perspective all wrong there.

In other similar cases, the couples have that arrangement but begrudge paying for it.
