Wait a second!! Where’s that come from?!?! There’s a couple of seconds of new footage in there than the original that I believe our James originally placed on You Tube. It’s also bloody good quality. The celebration for the Swindlehurst goal they show I’ve never seen before I’m sure - well, since that night anyway.

StanRd2005 27-08-2020 08:27 PM

I thought there was a bit more footage than I've seen before. That why I posted it . I just going to load the rest of the program with better audio. There is a bit more with Malcom Allison taking about Venables.

Ooooh. I am interested in this. Where did this good quality vid come from? Is it a clip from the mythical Phillips tape? I remember reading that they videoed every game. Someone put together a terrifyingly ruthless search party and report back when it's found.

Failure not an option.

Hey hey Palace v Charlton 1974 on the itv hub now( or whatever it’s called) . Venables playing, Flanagan playing against us. Never seen it or don’t remember having done. I know it’s been on before, just flagging up it’s current existence.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have seen most of our Big Match/Match of the Day games from the 70s, but for some reason, have never been able to see this one (even though I was at the game, and remember the cameras being there - we always remembered when the cameras were there back then!.

The goals are on the Centenary DVD, but it's a thing of beauty to see the game as was shown.

Things that stick out:
1. The pitch was terrible - and all they could talk about was how bad the pitch was on the previous Tuesday at Tooting & Mitcham
2. We didn't play very well.
3. No one did.
4. Except Derek Jeffries. He looked class.
5. A forward line of David Swindlehurst (9), Paul Hinshelwood (10), Peter Taylor (11) and Alan Whittle (8) - all forwards - none of them could be described as midfielders, attacking or otherwise
6. Although our goals were scored by our Left-Back (Jim Cannon) and 1 of our 2 midfielders (Nicky Chatterton)
7. Nicky Chatterton always seemed to score when the cameras were there.

How times have changed with one incident in the game where 2 Palace players go down injured after a clash of heads and we have possession with Whittle, instead of playing the ball out he continues with the play trying to set up a attack with a forward pass. Frank Lord our coach pushes one of the players who went down back up to get him to continue. :D

That's when football was played by men

Thanks for flagging this up. Enjoyed watching that. Peter Taylor looked good. Loved Big Mal and the team clapping the "best fans in the country". Quite right too. Wonder why was Whittle in a different shirt (one badge in the middle of the shirt)?

Those blue nets! Quality.

That's probably why we had been relegated in two successive seasons :sob:

I was definitely at that match, but oddly I couldn't recall anything about it except the Charlton goal!

The only thing I could remember about this game was Big Mal & the players coming out and clapping the fans in appreciation of our support.

Big Mal was always beefing up the fans to keep us onside. I can remember Thames television doing a 30 min discussion program about Palace with Big Mal & fans. I think it was just after we were relegated from Division 2. At one point the presenter started to criticise our drop to the 3rd division and asked what do the fans think. Big Mal shouted him down saying something like I tell you what these fans are the best in the land, they are fantastic. Does anyone remember this? Love to watch it again.

There were only 3 London clubs in the top flight that season - Palace plus Spurs and Arsenal.

It's on the itv player, 24.000 crowd, muddy pitch, some memory jerking advertising boards, as well as seeing the Whitehorse with both sets of fans mingling together and a good win . It's a good watch .:p
