-the iPhone will be registered to someone else (a different contract [an iPhone contract]
-the sim is sealed in an iPhone
My contract can't be renewed till jan so that's not an option, can anyone clarify for me cos i really want one of these bad boys.

Your mate who works at the O2 shop doesn't seem to have a clue then Godstone.
Firstly the iPhone will no longer be registered to someone else if they have upgraded to the new model. O2 are clear about this and are informing existing users that they can pass on their phone to be used with O2.
Secondly they obviously haven't got a clue about the iPhone if they think the sim is sealed in an iPhone, because it isn't. The access door is located on the top of the iPhone between the headphone socket and the power switch. Just push a paperclip into the small access hole and the sim card pops up.
Regarding contract renewal, O2 will cease an existing O2 contract when you register an iPhone and start a new 18 month contract from that point. If you are already on an 18 month contract with O2 then the end date wont even change.
From O2:-
Don't need 2 iPhones!
We want to make sure you find a good home for your old iPhone once you upgrade. If you've a friend, colleague or family member they can use it as a phone by choosing any of the three options below.
If they're on an existing O2 18-month minimum term contract, they can just transfer onto a Pay Monthly tariff for iPhone*. The end date of their contract will stay the same. Once their tariff has been transferred, they just need to connect to iTunes to activate the iPhone.
If they're an O2 business customers, they'll need to move onto a current business tariff with an iPhone Bolt On and will be able to keep their existing contract term*. Once their tariff has been transferred, they just need to connect to iTunes to activate the iPhone. To arrange this they'll need to contact Business Customer Services.
Existing O2 Pay & Go customers can use their current O2 Pay & Go SIM card or new customers can join O2 by getting a free Pay & Go iPhone SIM card from an O2 store. Then add the unlimited Web and Wi-Fi iPhone Bolt On (£10 a month). The only thing that does not work with this option is the Visual Voicemail.
* Tariff migration rules apply.
