Apple say that applications that you have opened and moved on are not running in the background but I don't believe them so I regularly turn off any applications that search for updates, the net or location, that's if you've got location turned on. (maps, Safari, Google earth, Weather, Camera, Skype) are all a problem.

Battery life on the iPhone4 is infinitely better than both the 3G & 3GS in my experience. Indeed it's almost reasonable.

My biggest gripe is with supposed multi tasking which is anything but as most apps simply reload when you go back to them rather than returning you to where you were in an app. For most apps it is nothing more than a short cut icon to load the poxy things.

Absolute crap implementation IMHO

Not sure what you mean B_E all my application load where I last used them even if not multitasking and when multitasking they do the same. I sometimes find it a bit of a pain to find I'm still somewhere else in the country on maps or some random site I last visited.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? But if I say am in the NatWest app and I double click the home button to open say, safari, when I go back to the NatWest app I have to log in again.

Same with my Tide Table app, Sky News app, O2 app etc etc. All of them reload when I go back to them. Safari returns to the same place but Inquisitor, another web browser app re-boots!

Am I doing something wrong or is my handset duff?

Confused of Dorset

Firstly are you on Iphone4?

Basically if you are in an app and press the Home button which used to close it, it doesnt anymore, it suspends it.

If you double click the home button does a little window appear at the bottom?

These are the apps currently 'suspended' ready to jump into action should they be opened again. To close them press and hold and they will wiggle, and have an X above them press the x and they will close properly

Blind_Eagle 31-08-2010 12:44 PM

Yes it's an iPhone 4.

Yes the 'little window' appears at the bottom if I double click the home button.

Unfortunately the vast majority of these 'suspended' apps aren't suspended at all. When I click on them, most start the app up from scratch, not from where I left it.

Thats not what I call multi -tasking, I might as well just re-launch the app seeing as it doesn't return me to where I was in an app, it loads it again.

Safari returns to the same place but then it always did even before iOS4. All very odd, I'm just not sure whether it's my phone not working properly, or just a shit implementation of multi tasking by Apple. (or the majority of the downloaded apps aren't capable of multi tasking)

Help!

Maybe those apps are not yet iOS4 compliant?

Smoz 31-08-2010 01:01 PM

I get the same as Blind on my 3GS/iOS4, some of my apps restart as opposed to picking up where they left off, e.g Wolfgang's Concert Vaults cannot play while other apps are running and restarts at the beginning of the track as opposed to where it left off, Texas Hold'em Poker (an Apple app) restarts at the title screen rather than mid-game.

I thought backgrounding apps only worked for those that supported apple's backgrounding API

That would explain it. So basically it's a shit implimentation by Apple, where only apps specifically written to do so will run in the background.

yeah, I am afraid so

Dave 31-08-2010 01:17 PM

although lots of apps are getting api support I believe

Blind_Eagle 31-08-2010 01:39 PM

Ta, lets hope developers of existing apps do the update before iPhone5 comes out! :D
