The iPhone (and the iPad 3g) uses Assisted GPS. This means that it utilises both the signals from the geostationary satellites as well as information from 3g transmitters locally - which helps the iPhone to 'lock in' accurately and quickly.

However, like most car GPS systems, it works fine without 3g (or WiFi) provided the Application has its own map store. The TomTom does. So you can switch off 3g and wiFi, and it will get you to wherever you need to go, just by using GPS.

Does Western Europe have updates?

How good is the quality of the Western Europe one in terms of the UK?

The Download size is just under 2 gigs, so you should be OK.

Yes, there are plenty of map updates. This is done without having to re-download the entire programme. Small revisions happen all the time. You can also upload corrections if you find a closed road (for example).

I can't compare to the UK Version, as I have the Western Europe one - but I believe it uses exactly the same maps (but over an extended area).

Edit: I see you said you have 2.5 MB free (not GB), so no - of course you will not have enough space. Sorry!

I meant GB, was rushing the typing ;)

Think i'll give it a go.

Got a tax rebate (after 8 letters), so will treat myself with some of it.

I use co-pilot. Costs £20 and never had a problem with it.

Paul, try Skobbler lite. It's free and works well for whenever i've used it in the past. Can't be bad for nitto.

Too Late.

Got the Tom Tom.

Worth the money.

Absolutely spot-on to Ipswich. Then to Allhallows, Kent. And then home today.

James 10-04-2011 11:06 PM

Excellent - glad to have been of help.

Apparently I've repped you for something else recently which means I'm not allowed to do so again. Crack is nowhere near as addictive as this :p

I would just like to echo this as a convert from Wunder Radio (which is over £4). Tunein works better; has a far better interface; offers more facilities such as pause and record; and I would highly recommend it for both the iPhone and iPad.

I put it on the iPad thread but gamers here might like to know that EA have big discounts on a number of their apps this weekend: http://www.macgasm.net/2011/04/22/ea...s-sale-easter/

Sure is. All three of us in the family are driven demented by this at the moment. Trying to get the 175,000 objective.

I'd echo this. TuneIn Radio rocks especially if you are abroad and want to get UK radio (or you are here and want to get radio from abroad)

Guys I dont know if this has been mentioned before but Air Video (app) combined with Air Video Server (app that rus on PC or MAC) has changed my life in using my iPhone and iPad.
I was able to stream a video from my home server via 3G to my iPhone, and it done it well ..O happy days :p

hong_kong_hg 28-04-2011 05:25 PM

That sounds like a winning combo - no need to arse about copying vids to VLC or CineX?

Slough Eagle 28-04-2011 05:39 PM

The server app is free, and the Full iPhone/iPad app is £1.79. Very easy to setup and use .... Also seems to be able to handle all movie file types :p
