I've got a keyless entry car and it won't open until you're in close proximity to the vehicle.

I think you may be referring to key cloning:

Never understood why the fob doesn't have an on/off switch to stop it emitting the signals.

In Sutton they will make a special trip to rectify if you notify either by phone or online

My other half's nephew lives in Waddon, who we visited yesterday, and had a very different view on Suttons collection, facilities and general operations where general services were concerned.

When you fight through the online help and get a real person and they never answe your questions just give you links to stuff you have already looked at as they haven’t bothered to red the question so you start getting pissed off as it’s taken 30 mins so far and all you want is a simply ******* answer. Happens all the time. Things are supposed to be easier but idiot chat bots followed but Customer service that thinks oh it’s this general stuff I’ll send him that drives me crazy.

I guess I'm not too fussy about it but waste collection in my part of Sutton seems fine. I rent a garage though, which has not received any maintenance for at least 20 years. Sutton is also too rapid in issuing costly summonses if Council Tax is late, but I suspect most boroughs are similar

Reminds me of the Microsoft help forums where queries are not met with any answers from the admins, just simplistic, unhelpful, questions

I'm not sure if I'm annoyed or impressed...

I'm taking my car in for a service on Thursday to the dealer. So far today I have received an email, 2 texts, a phone call and a voicemail reminding me of my appointment, and the voicemail was a real person not an automated message.

Got to love technology, but kind of think this might be a bit over the top use of it.

Plenty of time for it all to go pear-shaped, Hedgers. Could be one of your trademark service standards posts in the next 24/48hrs. Although honestly, I hope it all goes well.

Tiswas was fab for getting over teenage hangovers, specially with the gorgeous Sally.

Bipe 15-06-2023 09:10 AM

I have a couple of items to place before the committee today.

The first is Ad Blue, whatever the **** that is. I seem to spend half my life on an endless loop of traipsing to Halfords to buy these bloody Ad Blue pouches, squeezing the contents into the Ad Blue receptacle, driving for a few miles, observing that the 'low Ad Blue' warning has come on yet again, driving back to Halfords etc. Think it would be cheaper for me to buy a branch of Halfords.

There was also the unfortunate incident last winter when I put Ad Blue into my screen wash container, wasn't thinking straight after a long early morning car journey, and for week afterwards every time we used the screen wash we ended up with a blue haze on the windscreen. But that was entirely my fault.

The second is interest charges on credit cards. As someone who generally tries to pay off their balance in full this is not something that's really on my radar, but last month due to an administrative oversight on my part I ended up paying £50 short on a balance of over £6k. I was somewhat stunned this month to then be slapped with £200 of interest charges for the incomplete payment, and was so convinced that they'd made an error that I queried it. It turns out that if you don't make the payment in full then interest is charged daily on the entire running balance through the month, not just the bit you didn't pay. How the hell is that fair? So in theory I could have paid all bar 1p and still ended up with £200 of interest charges to swallow.

I still can't believe that this is legal and I'm thinking of asking Martin Lewis to start a campaign on my behalf.

Do they not charge that exorbitant interest rate if you use your card to get cash from a cash machine regardless of your balance.

I made that faux pas one time... never again.

P.S. I don't have a clue what Ad Blue is... I'm off to Google it.

Edit: Some kind of diesel fuel additive it would seem.

The young lady who I manage was late for work Monday and Tuesday, she then compounded this on Tuesday lunchtime by having a hour and 20 minute lunch break so when she came back we had a car park chat. On Wednesday she was on time, cracked it I thought.
Today she strolls in a hour late says hello and sits down. I decided to have a chat with her again to which one her first comments was I am not going to apologise for being late.
Love young people and their new attitude to work.

Any probate lawyers out there?? My son passed away 8 months ago without a will. They have just discovered a will after 8 months. Should it not be the first port of call to check with other lawyers in the town. As it happens two people were named on the will who have now deceased. So I am told I am the next in line. Also told that probate procedure will cease but now they have to implement a new procedure at a cost of 1.8 thousand and in addition my eventual costs will probably be 13000. I have been told by friends that if I complain it will take longer and therefore more expensive. It appears there are no checks or balances or accountability. Same with buying a house. It took me two weeks to sell two condos in USA. I hear that in uk it takes 4/5/6 months . Is uk that stagnant, slow.

Sorry for your loss.

You clearly need someone who understands probate in the US, and all that entails. The online fee in the UK for applying for probate is £273 for an estate in excess of £5k, although using third parties would be subject to their fees / negotiation.

Not sure whether your 2 weeks to sell two condos is a start to finish process - advertise > receive sale proceeds. Selling a property in the UK can take as long as a piece of string. All depends on the property and price, but doing the paperwork will certainly not be as quick as 2 weeks. Average from advertising > sale proceeds is at least 4 months according to reports.

I suspect she aspires to be an influencer. There seems to be a mini-trend of young people fed up with their jobs before they have started them and showing the world how they resign.

Sasme people will be online soon complaining about how unfair it is that they can't get a job.

I would get in there first with a HR meeting and the first official verbal warning. For attitude if nothing else. It affects all workers in a team.

And don't have this thread open or available anywhere near your work.

Why was she late?

No reasonable excuse then do the deduction. However things can get beyond our control sometimes, and sometimes things have a habit of compounding in awkward time frames. The late lunch is inexcusable I will admit and points to a habitually Tardy person. The reason is important though.

Put my old Shop Steward head on just then.

Above all, the first required step following the perfectly reasonable private chat is a written warning with an explanation of likely next steps should she be found to be taking advantage again in the future.

I was a great believer in discussing these potential issues with the staff that reported to me. Making them understand what constituted taking the piss was paramount to me managing them and them understanding what were my or the company's boundaries.

I really like Pallet on these boards. I'm kind of conflicted now though, because of my past experience in Shop Stewarding.

Thing is the following says a lot. Especially if the reason for being late, is exactly the same twice. I'm almost certainly going to regret putting my hand up on this.

Are yoou missing the bits when he said she was late 3 days out of four with the latest one being an hour late. Add in the extended lunch. And the coffin nail of her stating she is not going to apologise for being an hour late.

Two issues, One is solved by wage deduction, and see what the reaction is to the employee owning that. The other seems to be a power struggle to me, which is unnecessary. I'm not there though, so can't really say.

Plus I'm used to big organisations, where people aren't totally reliant on someone 'having' to be there. So I probably shouldn't have spoken up.

It is two issues though.

Tbf to them they had the power back on again within the hour and so difficult to complain too much this time. The local assumption that the ‘evil builders’ had sliced a cable can’t have been right either unless it was on pe of their own on the development and that blew the local sub.

pallet 16-06-2023 07:52 AM

Thanks for all the advice and feedback and also Ozzie the kind words. Age teaches us all I think to be more patient and I have to honest the work space has changed massively since when I started work. I have tried so hard with her, last week she had to go to our office near Heathrow, my boss asked her to be there at 9am she arrived at 11am claiming she had left at 7am from Catford.
Last night I told her to go home and think if this is the right job for her. I like her she is smart and more than capable of doing the job but what annoys me is the lack of respect and the understanding that in any job when you first start making a good impression and showing willing are the miniumn requirements of anyone.

RazorsEdge 16-06-2023 08:21 AM

4 hours from Catford to Heathrow? Even public transport would be quicker.
Maybe the job is not for her, but any job she takes, she will have to make it on time.

Stopped watching years ago now. My problem is that they stopped reporting the news and instead attack the guests to make news. I prefer to hear what the interviewee wants to communicate and leave me to interpret whether it’s right or not. Keep asking intelligent, awkward and insightful questions but the relentless and stroppy delivery is beyond tiresome. Leave that for in depth news programmes and the interviewers that are smart enough to know the facts.

On top of that, everything seems like filler pieces that get an ahhhh or an ooh as they groom their next candidate for Strictly.

They really should just try reading out the news headlines.

Maz 16-06-2023 11:12 AM

You would think, by now, there would be a browser add-on to block whatever settings you opt in or out of. Cookies are probably too lucrative for the browsers, I guess.

I like the ones that say 'reject all' or better still, like the CPFC site that lets you decline straight off the bat.

I come back the previous power cut.

All fine as I went to pick up my lunch. Came back, looking forward to watching the Palace lads play for England, no electricity and no internet on my phone.

We can go a few weeks without an issue, but when it does happen it's invariably when I want to watch football and have the freedom of the house to do so.

Got back on around the 70th minute mark.

How does that work? My internet and electricity still went down when the football was on. The village of Puchuncavi is not full of locations to watch England play Malta, and I suspect the downage affected most of the surrounding area. The lunch in itself wasn't a problem. I bought two (2nd is dinner) because I am flash like that. TBF. When I am on my own it doesn't cost much more than me forking out and cooking fresh. I fancy getting some fish and cooking on the morrow, though.

You need to think these things through my prickly friend.

I don't as a rule do packed lunches. I might make an exception over the next few days as there is an overland trek to the beach that we want to do with the dogs - about 6 or 7 miles.

I will keep you posted.

Hedgehog 17-06-2023 02:28 AM

Peter old boy... I was getting in before Maidstoned rises in the morning to remind you of the value of a packed lunch.

PeterH 17-06-2023 02:46 AM

I suspect Maidstoned is far too busy these days with his karaoke.

Indeed. Now Sir Paul is going to start making Beatles records using AI.

Anyway... cleaning up leaves and pine needles for 2 and a half hours this morning, only for the wind to come up this afternoon, and it now looking worse than before I started the clean up...

(I think I may have done this one before)

My garden is pretty sorted. I have some tree pruning to do, and I have to constantly keep on top of the weeds. We have the next batch of fruits and veggies coming through, plus the cultivated weed.

Turning into The Good Life here.

Which reminds me I came across this the other day. Final episode of The Good Life filmed in the TV studies in the presence of The Queen. Worth watching at the beginning for references to Saville and some sexist introductions that would blow the lid off the BBC today.

One detests "Karaoke". My good self is in my 80s with mobility problems so do not grace 'Hostelries' like in the 'Good old days'.If I saw "Karaoke" advertised I would gave it the old Franz Klammer hip-swerve.What on earth is entertaining about some chap/lady with no singing voice belt out a song at high volume and totally out of tune ? And they are usually 'Three sheets to the wind'. Ruddy awful.:wallbash::wallbash::frown:

You are missing the point here old chum. It's a Maidstoned appreciation society - a bit of a love in, if you will.

And 'rent free'? What's happening to the subscription I send you every month to be Top Fan. I trust that isn't a scam. Oh, and while I'm here, you haven't added any new webcam videos since last year - could you look into that.

It depends, some of them, like Beatleboy and Maidstoned, aren't half bad. Ya know, if you were a long way from the stage and looked up occasionally from the doldrums of your two hour solitary beer. You could almost feel you had a bit of a social life and some friends in the pub. A fleeting respite, granted, but something for the evenings when the supermarkets are closed and there aren't any cashiers to bore.

Legal is not quite the term. De-criminalised.

I wouldn't rate my chances if the police were intending to get you for something much bigger, and found nothing more than a couple of plants for personal use. They've done a few people for that.

As in, they look the other way until they choose not to.

I think I need to go across and tell him there is a setting where you can turn it off. Mine was doing it when I first got it.

Never quite sure what the point of it is.

A bit of an update: The kid across the street seems to have disabled the "chirping" door locks on his new car.

Maybe it was annoying him as well.

He's still my mate.

I think most thought of Mat has one of those 'ironic racists' doing it for effect on the BBS. At some point there seemed to be a resalisation that he believed in every 'chortle' he posted on here.

That is my take anyway. I was on a posting sabbatical at the time of his removal.

Maybe he turned into a disenchanted middle aged affluent whitey not entirely content with his place in life, family/relationships, work and society, and thus looked at others to blame for this malaise. There are certainly a number of those on here.

Maybe he reads the BBS and when he went to write a post about the annoying Limey across the street he saw your post about his pride and joy alarm system.

Our mutual friend and boss doesn't have much work for me, and if my health is declining I need to set up a fund for my family for when I've gone.

It would make a good TV show I reckon.

Not sure if it’s annoyed but rather amazed that someone got cancelled for this.

“According to Pink News, Donald "liked" Tweets that included criticism of a campaign promoting period product inclusivity featuring trans men”

Reminds me of that scene from Life of Brian “but you haven’t got a womb”

Probably he's annoyed at me making all sorts of noise between 7:00am and 8:50am on a Saturday morning all through the winter when he is trying to get his beauty sleep.

If you really want to get irked, there is an awful lot of noise around that very scene at the moment. And, as you can imagine, John Cleese doesn't really have the beliefs to be drawn into a debate about whether the scene should be cancelled now or whether representatives of Monty Python should apologise for its existence.

Personally, I think that the scene is more subtle and relevant to today's debate on the subhject than its silly detractors are able to give it credit for.

I copied this over from another thread.

This is a classic because I feel it annoys on various levels.

BBC headlines like this irrationally get my skin crawling

'Prince Louis delights crowd as grandchildren watch King's first birthday parade'

That's just pandering to dumbed down idiots. I can't imagine anything more vomit inducing than seeing a couple of members of public being 'delighted' by some ponced up little prince waving on daddy's or mummy's prompting.

My own grandkids sometimes do some 'cute' things or say something startling. But that's where it should stop for everyone.

PeterH 18-06-2023 02:09 AM

And yes, I will be that guy. I will go there.

Just stop BBC, enough.

Articles like this is why BBC should start using adverts so we do not have to cough up money for this kind of crap. The BBC should scrap the licence fee, introduce adverts on tv and go to a paid subscription service for their online content.

We saw one of those cooking shows yesterday.
They ALL star James Martin, but that is only slightly annoying.
What is properly annoying is we made the roasted chickpea and paprika dish the guests were all raving about.
It was disgusting.

ozzieEagle 18-06-2023 09:58 AM

I think I'm being totally ungracious with this one. Mates missus here, who knows stuff all about football and lives her life organising events and functions, mostly good, in fact always good. Decides to take my Football going mate, me, and my missus and herself to the "Womens world cup" here. I thought nice, I'll enjoy that, will make a change to go with the girls and a proper world cup, well of sorts! "Bought 4' She says proudly. Turns out we are going to the Prelim freindly Bastille day game v France. Mate and I don't know whether to tell her or not.

As an organisation, I understand the BBC is a long way behind being technically competent enough to move into this area. Let's revisit this in 10 years.

TBH I am not sure why teachers are getting involved in this in the classroom.

There should be some sort of pre-term training for strategies to avoid getting caught up in this shite, and ways to teach without using stuff like pronound at all - using names.

Teachers should have the right not to be drawn into student evoked discussions. Teenagers can be devious little scrotes, and now they have the tools to create a scandal that gets way out of hand for their own self-entitled pleasure.

You'd after be a bit of an idiot as a 'teacher' to make a stand or attempt to 'teach' your point of view in today's environment. I would say that is as mental as the situation we find ourselves in regarding these issues in the world. How are you ever going to get your points across and accepted as an 'okay' personal view against this backdrop. It would take one child complaint and one pissed off parent, and you are toast. And plenty of activists and media outlets are out there just waiting to lap it up. People are going to, and losing in court over all this madness.

I get, kind of, what the teacher was saying badly. I am 100% convinced that there are people who were born male but are wired as a female and visa versa. Those people certainly get my support and it’s great that they can convert and live their lives how they feel they should. It’s all the stupid stuff that seems to ride in the back of this that gets my goat. Super swimmers that were ex men. Athletes breaking all womens records as they had their bodies built and then decided to switch. Oh any anyone DARE question it gets vilified. The kids get put on report for questioning. Questions can lead to education.
