Only for setup, I think

EagleSE24 07-04-2009 05:53 PM

Has anyone tried/ is anyone planning on getting this http://www.slingmedia.com/go/iphone ?

Television transmitted direct to your phone...

Some great recommendations on this thread! I just found Glyder which is awesome, only $1.99 here so I expect it's also cheap in the UK. Kinda like a chilled out Pilotwings style flying game.

TV Plus for the iPhone has been around since October 2008 and it works perfectly. I have used it many times and it has never let me down.

OK - Dave won't use it because, er, someone might maliciously programme his Sky Plus box if his password is compromised - but for the rest of us, why bother with the definitely inferior Sky+ official release?

eh? That is just a frontend to sky remote record, which is what we are trying to set up.

Kevin T 09-04-2009 02:28 PM

I downloaded TV Plus a while back, then tried to setup Remote Record on the SKY website. Server down. Tried a few other times in the following days. Fail. Gave up after a while and forgot all about it until this thread.

It may have been a glitch though as it didn't seem like there were ever too many planes on screen. Never got above 80 before or since...

Lizzy 10-04-2009 02:39 PM

To Sky.

Kevin T 10-04-2009 02:40 PM

It's next door to my gym - although I've just come back from there.

Dave 10-04-2009 02:46 PM

I rang them, they said they have a single dial up server and the whole of the UK is trying to register their boxes to use it with the jeebus phone,

Wankers

Kevin T 10-04-2009 03:07 PM

I have no problem dialling in to connect to the server to register my phone from the tv. I can't activate the service on the website.

All working now

$6 here so I'd imagine it would be 2-3 quid over there.

I am not happy as I have one of the original Slingboxes:

Quote:

Sling Media has announced that the first few models of the Slingbox won't work with new Sling software, including the much-anticipated SlingPlayer for iPhone.

The company, which is now owned by EchoStar, informed Slingbox owners on the Sling Media Web site Wednesday, saying that owners of the original Slingbox, Slingbox AV, and Slingbox Tuner were encouraged to upgrade to either a Slingbox Pro, Slingbox Pro-HD, or Slingbox Solo and that the company would offer those owning discontinued boxes a $50 discount to upgrade. (The Solo is the entry-level product and costs $180).

The reason? Because "software like SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and future services yet to be announced" will only be supported on Solo, Pro and Pro-HD, and EchoStar SlingLoaded products.

The notoriously vocal and tight-knit Sling community wasn't pleased, with more than 120 comments on the topic in the SlingCommunity.com forum as of this posting, most of which expressed disappointment and anger. Since the upgrade offer was actually posted Wednesday, many Sling owners mistook it for a prank.

"I just hope this is one sick April Fool's joke - if it is it's not very funny," wrote one member of SlingCommunity.com. Others chimed in with similar hope, until it became clear this was all rather serious.

While a Sling representative didn't immediately return a request for comment Thursday, the company did note in the same blog post that the older versions (Slingbox, AV, and Tuner) will still function normally on their own, but won't be able to take advantage of new services.

A heads up for anyone using the sky app to remote record that your sky remote record account is linked to your viewing card, not the box itself so if you get a new box it will still work.

The slingbox app is finally here. It's £17.99. I have got it, but it only works over wifi at the moment, so cant use it yet. I’m a bit disappointed they haven't got it for 3G.

Teemo 13-05-2009 01:54 PM

Is slingbox the app that allows you to watch freeview channels?

Is it any good? Smooth?

Niceaction 13-05-2009 01:57 PM

You need the slingbox hardware connected to your tv. The app allows you to watch and control that tv over the net.
If your using the app over wifi then the picture quality should be very good, but as I said, I haven't tested yet.

Teemo 13-05-2009 02:10 PM

Oh right, thanks for the info. All sounds a bit too much for me. I'll stick to my TV for the time being.

£18 for the application is ******* ridiculous.

It's also ridiculous that Slingbox isn't supporting the 'old' hardware.

hong_kong_hg 13-05-2009 09:10 PM

The old hardware isn't officially supported but it does work. Price is steep and lack of 3G is disappointing, but I have a classic and it works fine, other than the aspect ratio having to be letterbox and not as big on the screen as it could be.

Kevin T 13-05-2009 09:28 PM

I can't believe I got excited about Palace Radio and then had my hopes dashed within 10 seconds. Meh.

I often go to bed listening to crazy shock jocks from across the pond. The other day I listened to some New York radio station ripping into Jaqui Smith. Made me laugh that she was getting both barrels even in the US media. And they use language you'd never hear on radio over here. I was chuckling to myself as they were labelling her a witch and a ******.

Without 3G its pointless. I have had it running fine on my BB Curve even over the Edge network. Anywhere I would use it with 3G, (hotel, airport etc) I have my laptop anyway!

Niceaction 13-05-2009 11:11 PM

I've been playing with the Slingbox app all night. It's very nice and has no stutter. The Man U Wigan match tonight flowed very nicely without any lag.
If you have a jailbroken phone, you can download Tricker3G to make the iphone believe it is using wifi when you are using a 3g connection.
This makes it really worthwhile in my opinion. The picture quality deteriorates slightly as you might expect, but it is still highly watchable.

The only downside is the long pause between scrolling channels. I have now set up a bunch of favourites to make that much quicker.

£18 is expensive for an app, but for me it is worth it.

James 14-05-2009 12:50 AM

Me too - you persuaded me to try it. This is the Review I have just submitted to the Application Store:

Quote:

So - at long last we have the application for the Slingbox. First - the price. How can Slingmedia justify a price tag of this magnitude (£17.99 in the UK at the time of writing)? I appreciate that the Application has taken a while to develop, but every user will already have purchased a Slingbox (which is not cheap), so to be asked for this amount more is outrageous. Compare this to the Orb Live application at £5.99 for example (which streams media from your PC - including live TV if you have a tuner) and the contrast is stark.

Once installed it does work very well over a Wireless Network - but that's it. The second problem is that the Application will not work over 3g (note that Orb Live works fine over 3g).

I should also mention that I have tried this application using my old Slingbox Classic, and it works perfectly - although the Classic is not supported officially. Cynics might suggest that the lack of support for the 'old' hardware may be designed to encourage upgrading. It's not too hard to draw this conclusion, as the Sling Media website urges those with the old systems to 'upgrade' - and offers discounts for those willing to fork out yet more cash.

I am giving the Application three stars, because it functions very well in its limited capacity over the Wireless Networks. It would obviously get more if it was priced a little more keenly and - crucially - if it worked over the 3g Networks.

Niceaction 14-05-2009 07:04 AM

That pretty much sums it up for me. 3G is absolutely necessary, and the price is off putting for most.

It is very nice once you've got it going though!

Dave 14-05-2009 09:16 AM

Slingbox are literally having laugh

Hopng sky will port anytime to iPhone soon

James 28-05-2009 03:09 PM

Has anyone else tried the new Print n Share Application? It's not cheap, but so far as I am aware, it's the only really easy to use print application for the IPhone. It works very well - although even if you have a network printer (as I do), you still need your PC (or Mac, or Ubuntu or whatever) switched on to use it. You may print from any source on the IPhone, including web pages, pictures and documents.

Speaking of Slingbox, I went and got one of these yesterday. Works fine with 3g signal on a jailbreak (broke?), phone with Tricker3g.

Actually, really quite impressed.

It's madness that they haven't (initially), released it to work over 3g. I'm assuming it's more to do with the 'unlimited / fair use' contracts that mobile operators chuck around?
