It is a game that stands in my memory more than many and and though we lost Ii came out of the ground as a 10 year old very proud of the team.

Tambling 2 Birchenall. Law 2 Best 3. Remember the game well. Very Pardewesque performance before anyone had heard of him.

Keep an eye out on BT Sport...the other night Big Match Revisited featured Palace v Charlton in Dec 1974. It was the main game with Malcolm Allison talking Brian Moore through the game at the end. After all these years supporting Palace, I didn’t know Paul Hinshelwood played as a No10 not just at right-back.

He started out as a centre forward, but for one reason or another it just didn’t work out. I’m pretty sure that’s where the ‘Doris’ tag come from. His conversion to right back proved to be inspired. Arguably our best ever in that position.

Thought that was because of that dodgy perm?

jhc 30-08-2019 01:55 PM

They all had dodgy perms in those days:D

Thought it was because some fans said he played like an old woman when he played up front, but I stand to be corrected on that!

Whatever, I’ll always regard him as being our best ever right back. A wonderful player & competitor.

Turning a forward into a classy right back seems to be our thing:D

Enjoyed watching the home FA Cup 3rd round 1970-71 game against Chelsea on BT Sport last night.
Was at the game and conditions underfoot were the worst I've ever seen. Most players wore baseball boots as so slippery. They still managed to put on a great spectacle for a massed vocal crowd though. Alan Birchenall particularly impressive against one of his old clubs. Bought back great memories of that team.
Jackson
Sewell. McCormick. Blyth. Wall
Scott Payne Kember Taylor T
Queen Birchenall

Never seen that one before. Caught it this morning. Nice goal to go ahead. Loved half-time draw being done by John Hollins and the ref as they walk off. Think they just wanted to get in the warm dressing room! See if they can get Van Dijk to do the draw at the weekend!

Pretty sure it’s a reference to Doris Day from his time in the Palace Youth - very similar hairsyles!

Paul Hinshelwood was also known as ‘Fish’ to fellow Palace players and staff due to his drinking exploits!

That was the match I picked out in another thread as the best atmosphere I'd experienced at a Palace game.

Friday 13th December on BT Sport 2:
3am-4am - 29/4/79 Palace v Notts County
4am-5am - 6/5/79 Orient v Palace not mentioned in the summary but it was shown back in the day so I assume that it will be again.
5am-6am - 13/5/79 Cup Final edition. Can't remember whether they had any clips of the Burnley match.

Good memories of that game, despite it being before I was born. The only time I've ever watched it was on the supporters coach to the Villa Park semi final. Slightly strange to show us losing to boost morale for the day.

I guess the coach organisers knew what we'd be getting at VIlla Park that day
