Do you quit an application by pressing the menu button, or is it then still working somewhere in the background?

I think the apps quit but mail etc depending on your settings will still download emails etc

Has anyone discovered a way to accelerate the sleep mode? When I put the phone in my pocket and later take it out, I often discover I have accidentally started some application which has been running in the meantime. Rather than have to wait for the sleep mode before putting the phone in the pocket, it would be good if I could manually put it into sleep. Any ideas?

Press the power button once and it will put it into sleep mode.

yeh the only things we won't benefit from is the new camera and battery life and the updted web browsing speeds not sure if this "compass" is included in the software update

compass is on 3G models

once you connect your iphone to itunes it'll automatically update the software for you
