Mrs Smoz's iphone 3g is kaputt. It is only a couple of months old, I have made an appointment at the Regent Street store tomorrow but thought that I would also seek help here.

Able to send/receive SMS ok but unable to make calls (receives message "call failed" when attempted). Incoming calls ring as normal but when answered unable to hear/be heard.

Web access and ipod functions seem to be fine.

Have tried a restore via itunes to no avail. Have alsp followed the suggestions on apple's support pages (ie restore via itunes, reboot etc), still no joy.

Anyone got any ideas?

RDSdaEAGLE 23-01-2009 08:13 PM

Might be worth giving o2 a call too. It seems to me that it's not a phone issue if you've done a restore.

I didn't think that it was a network fault as she can send receive texts and access the web via 3g using it. However no harm in trying I suppose, will look up their number and give them a try.

Travelcard 24-01-2009 12:36 PM

Can you connect an iPhone to Microsoft Exchange to get mail/calendars etc? Don't want to use OWA really.

You can and the emails are all formatted perfectly. It's just like looking at Outlook basically.

Update, it was faulty, Apple Store replaced it, you can all stop worrying now.

Dave 25-01-2009 01:45 PM

did you buy via 02?

Smoz 25-01-2009 01:58 PM

No, she originally bought it at the Apple Store in Regent Street.

2.2.1 firmware released today, doesn't seem to be anything too exciting though, just bug fixes.

Is there any way to find out how many text messages I've sent? Don't want to go too far over my limit and I'm not sure I'm in the mood for counting messages from over 30 conversations.

Assuming you're on an O2 contract send a blank text to 21202

It is still locked to O2. It would be interesting to know just how long O2's contract with Apple for exclusive rights is.

Pretty long I'd imagine, wouldn't really benefit either company to have more than one phone company selling the iPhone

PalaceMonkey 29-01-2009 04:48 PM

it'd benefit Apple not to be exclusive surely?

O2 must have paid lots & lots to get exclusivity

Johnson 29-01-2009 05:16 PM

I think O2 signed a 5 year deal with Apple for the Iphone, could be wrong but I think it was 5 years.

Baloo 30-01-2009 07:31 AM

When I gave notice on my T-mobile contract, saying I was moving to O2 for the iphone, they told me the exclusivity expires in 2009, and then T-mobile would also be able to offer it.

Of course I believed him.

Blind_Eagle 30-01-2009 08:08 AM

According to the Guardian O2's contract with Apple runs until 2012. There was an option for renegotiation after two years but this has apparently passed without any change.

Kevin T 30-01-2009 05:11 PM

I got bored of waiting to be elligable for an upgrade with 02 so phoned them today and piled on the pressure. My new iPhone should be with me Monday / Tuesday :D

If more companies carried it then monthly contracts would drop, so unless all the companies paid Apple the same set monthly amount regardless of the contract people are on then it would. However if the iPhone is out on a 20 tariff then Apple aren't going to get as much from the contract compared to people being on the minimum of 35 contract (surely no-one has the 30 one?!)

Blind_Eagle 30-01-2009 06:21 PM

I'm on the 30 one Steve. 600 minutes and 600 texts pm plus free insurance for 30 seems pretty good to me.

Kevin T 31-01-2009 12:54 AM

My phone bill is always between 50 and 60 so the 45 tarriff with unlimited downloads, 1200 mins and 500 texts seems good to me.

Were/are you still on an existing contract with them? Only that I pay 25.50 p/month + 7.50 insurance but am pondering whether to try and convince them to up my existing contract for the next 8 months with them to an iphone contract, then continue on for as long as an iphone contract would demand, in order to get one now....

I was also paying between 50-60 monthly. It's your monthly spend that's important here. I don't fancy your chances to be honest.

Not even if I pay the extra 8.69 on my current contract (which would take me up to the deal I want with 02 online + 7.50 insurance) for the 8 remainding months then agree to be bound into a further 18 months at that price? I'll even pay the 99 for the handset.

Kevin T 03-02-2009 01:46 PM

I dunno. Just ask them what you have to do to get one now!

Or sit tight until nearer the end of your contract, there will be almost certainly be a new iPhone out early summer (see link below where one of Apple's senior directors mentions the company's timelines for new product releases). .

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/09/...uct-timelines/

There have also been reports of iphone 2.1 being detected in use in the south SF Bay area, there is plenty of speculation that this is 'evidence' of the new model being tested in the wild

All of this is currently just blog talk so take it with a pinch of salt.

Kevin T 03-02-2009 08:48 PM

Does anyone know much about the o2 fair usage download policy on the iphone? I asked if there was a download limit and they said no. I asked if there was a fair usage policy and they said 'yes, but it's huge and it won't cause you a problem'

I only ask as I've just downloaded the LBC radio application, and there's a disclaimer that it downloads shed loads of data as you listen.

Dave 03-02-2009 08:55 PM

MatOV.fm on the jesus phone, I could cry.

There is no data limit.

I have streamed last.fm for entire days on 3G, to the point where the phone was so hot I thought the black plastic would melt.

Probably going to hold out and see if a new one comes out. My current phone (Nokia N95) is fine but I want to be able to go on the net whilst out and about etc etc. Was speaking with a mate today who thinks a new one will appear sometime this year. Best sit tight.

A year with a Nokia, good luck with that

Kevin T 04-02-2009 07:49 AM

A day with a Nokia would drive me to distraction. That one I had at Securicor in 2001 is the only one I've ever had.

RDSdaEAGLE 04-02-2009 07:52 AM

I won't be getting an iPhone just yet after all. I can't feasibly spend $300 on a phone and then spend another $90 every month.

I am coming in to a little money soon, so maybe then - but we'll see.

Sounds like the septics get a really bad deal. Here the phone is free on an upgrade (50 to upgrade to 16GB) then I think you get 1200 minutes and 500 texts for 45 per month (inc of VAT)

Hoping to recoup the money by selling this one.

over here (hong kong) i've got 1400 minutes and unlimited texts for less than eight quid a month! :lux:

on the down side, i have to buy the iphone (or A.N.Other i guess) as a phone only deal which means it's steep - 500 quid.

Swanny32 06-02-2009 11:16 AM

Got a slight problem lads that I need some assistance with if you would be so kind.

I have my iPhone setup to automatically connect to my WiFi when I get home which it does but as soon as I go to load a webpage it drops the wireless and uses plain 2g signal, any ideas?

I have tried a reset, tried switching to aeroplane mode and back, and I have tried forgetting the network and re connecting but it is still doing the same thing.

Dave 06-02-2009 11:24 AM

does it all back to edge when doing mail too?

EagleSE24 06-02-2009 11:37 AM

Anyone playing Real Football 09 on their iphone? 3.49 but definitely worth it in my opinion. Just try not to get caught playing it at work...

Swanny32 06-02-2009 11:38 AM

Not as far as i am aware.

Dave 06-02-2009 11:39 AM

sounds to me like your wireless isn't connected at all

Swanny32 06-02-2009 11:50 AM

It must be, the wireless symbol pops up until I try to load a webpage, in the settings it says it is connected to my network as well. Also have it setup to automatically connect to my Mums WiFi when I go round there and that works fine.

Dave 06-02-2009 11:51 AM

That wireless symbol doesn't mean much, ditto 3g or E

Swanny32 06-02-2009 11:57 AM

It must mean something otherwise there is no point in having it

Dave 06-02-2009 11:59 AM

When wireless is shown as connected, go to settings Wi-Fi, click the arrow next to your wireless ssid.
What IP does it show?

Swanny32 06-02-2009 12:07 PM

I'll let you know later when I get home.

Just seems strange as I set it up exactly the same way as I did at mums only yesterday. One works, one doesn't, I have tried forgetting both just in case they are conflicting but nothing.

Dave 06-02-2009 12:11 PM

It might be connecting but not getting an ip address -

Swanny32 06-02-2009 12:16 PM

If it is doing that Dave then how would I fix it?

Only been doing it since I installed my new Netgear Wireless Router so maybe it is a setting on there?

Dave 06-02-2009 12:23 PM

Yeah - if it connects fine on other routers then it's the new router for sure.

When you get home - turn on wireless then log into the router and see if you can see your Iphone connected under attached devices or similar

Nope, not attached even though the wireless symbol is present.

Tried forgetting the network and connecting again but it's not having it.

Swanny32 06-02-2009 06:12 PM

Nope, don't worry, it had access restriction on my router so although it was saying it had connected to the router anytime you wanted to actually use the connection it would drop out, all sorted now.
