Also, I don't think IMAP supports remote wipe, does it? |
how is texting on an iPhone?
|
Works like a dream. The touch screen is dead easy to use if you don't have a phobia for it, and displays all text "conversations" in a great Ichat type mode.

I got an unlocked one off ebay for £200, put my original sim in it, works a dream, touch wood
|
Has anyone taken a picture with the camera ??
Uncle Dave will you take one and post it up here please so i can see quality. |
Tks. I'm still very tempted to get one unlocked and try and get it to work with my work phone sim card though. I need to use Skype for some conference calls sometimes and I'm the only one who hasn't got it, so need to figure out a mobile way of doing that. Also, my IPOD is dead.
If I buy an iphone in the US can I buy it without a contract? |

This suggests you can use Skype without unlocking. Any idea if it works?
Skype comes to the iPhone Instant messaging wish granted By Ciara O'Brien, ElectricNews.net → More by this authorPublished Thursday 16th August 2007 09:08 GMT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Be a part of The Register's Security Seminar, Live & Online, 9th July 2008 iPhone fans are set have their wish granted, with the news that a German firm has developed an application that brings Skype functionality to the device. One of the complaints that users of the hybrid phone and MP3 player had was relating to its instant messaging functionality, or lack thereof. German firm Shape Media has stepped in to fill the gap. The application, dubbed "IM+ for Skype", transforms the iPhone into a Skype handset. The web application, which works through the iPhone's Safari web browser, allows iPhones to use the Skype messaging service along with its Voice over IP (VoIP) network. By logging on to skypeforiphone.com, users can access their Skype account, allowing them to make free Skype to Skype calls, and use their SkypeOut credits to make calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world. According to Shape Media, the application will work across different networks and does not require Wi-Fi to operate. The application was designed for use with the iPhone's touchscreen, and has the added benefit of offering more cost-effective call charges than many carriers, for both landline and mobile calls - domestic and overseas. Similar software has already been developed for platforms such as Windows Mobile, RIM's Blackberry, Palm and Symbian devices. © 2007 ENN |
I'm afraid I can't talk about that
|
why? If it doesn't require unlocking, it isn't dodgy is it?
|
It's a work thing.

Can you post a pic david

Can someone tell me if i am out of a hotspot area, i.e. at Selhurst and i want to look at the net am i charged per min ??
Can i use it off my own hub for free ?? Is the whole of central london covered ?? Thanks |
Internet access is bundled in with the cost of the monthly O2 tariff,s you shouldn't need to pay any extra.
I believe there are deals with the cloud to use their wi-fi hotspot's for nothing if you have an iphone, and the answer to that middle question is yes. |
Quote:
It was an iphone or a 32 gig ipod touch. I just didnt know what i'd be better off for with net use etc. |
Well the iphone O2 monthly bill comes with all you can eat internet access (as long as you're happy with paying 35 quid a month that is) plus wi-fi hotspots.
ipod touch access is dependant on free wi-fi hotspots (IE: McDonalds, Wetherspoons etc) or paying at the likes of Starbucks for expensive T-Mobile or BT access per hour. |
Why would you want wifi when you have 3G/

If i buy an iphone, i can sit anywhere in England (as long as i have a signal) and browse the net for free and not be charged ?? Is there a cap on how much i can browse ?? If i have an ipod touch i can use it free on wifi hotspots and my own router? , but do i have to pay for them and do i have a limit on how much browsing i can do. My worry about the iphone from what i have heard is: i cant send multiple text Forward messages receive picture messages does it have blue tooth ? and the camera is crap as I take quite a few pics while I’m out and about. 16gb isn’t very big for my music. So it’s buy a 32gb touch and a new phone (any recommendations) Or Get an iphone and wait till an 80gb touch comes out. But I want to reduce the clutter I carry. Any help would be welcomed. |

Yep, there is a fair usage policy of 3Gb but you should be ok with that. If i have an ipod touch i can use it free on wifi hotspots and my own router? , but do i have to pay for them and do i have a limit on how much browsing i can do. If its on free hotspots or your own browser its free with no limit, incidently the iPhone would also be able to use the same connection. My worry about the iphone from what i have heard is: i cant send multiple text Don't know about this one... Forward messages Not true, correctable in software I believe receive picture messages Rumoured to be coming but we'll have to wait and see does it have blue tooth ? Yep and the camera is crap as I take quite a few pics while I’m out and about.16gb isn’t very big for my music. 2Mp is not great but its not terrible either. 16Gb is enough for about 4000 songs (depending on recorded bitrate) So it’s buy a 32gb touch and a new phone (any recommendations) Or Get an iphone and wait till an 80gb touch comes out. But I want to reduce the clutter I carry. Nothings perfect for everyone but a phone and a touch for the reasons above doesn't seem logical to me...your choice though Stav. |
I LIKE TO TOUCH woops caps

You can send multiple texts You can't forward messages (although someone on here posted there is a way of sorting that out) You can't receive picture messages, but I think O2 will text you a link to direct you to a web address where you can view the picture message It does have bluetooth Camera is absolutely fine. However it doesn't have video capabilities or a flash. It is a cracking piece of kit. You won't regret it. |
I've been reading this thread and it seems to be written in Chinese.
Is it easy to write e-mails and texts on this phone? I find it cumbersome on my current phone, either graffiti or pointing a little stylus at a keyboard. And does it synchronise with Outlook efficiently and quickly? Thank you. |
Quote:
you can sync with outlook via itunes, i havent done it but it seems to be a very simple process. just get an iphone. the interface is worth the investment because it is total intuition in the palm of your hand and it is therefore worth the investment. |
Yes, I am getting one I think, it's out of my hands (obviously, not literally). Telefonica are giving me one.

I think it will come in time. All software.
An Iphone with A2DP would be amazing. |
got a text from o2 with the website details for upgrading online and the site is crawling!
|
you can upgrade now?
|
If you pre registered Dave yes.
I've been trying to upgrade most of this morning but the site is running like a dog. Having said that my latest attempt brought up a different upgrade page which has got me slightly further through the site before it fell over :D |
Hmm - I think I'll hold fire until the weekend

I've ordered mine. No idea if it'll come on Friday but we shall see.
|
My Dad got one back in January / February, he told me yesterday that O2 phoned him last week offering a free upgrade (which obviously he is going to take advantage of).
A bit miffed I haven't had that call yet... |

i just checked for the first time if the Iplayer worked on iPod Touch and i was quite surprised to see it did. I would conclude that it will pretty much definitely work on iPhone 3G, using quicktime as it does on the iPod. Awesome.

Before Activating Once you've got your new iPhone 3G, you'll need to connect to iTunes to activate it. 1. Check your voicemail Before you activate your iPhone 3G, make sure you listen to your current voicemails. If you're an existing O2 customer, activation will delete your existing voicemails. If you're transferring an existing number from another network operator, existing voicemails will not be transferred. 2. Transfer your contacts, music and photos Before you activate, migrate your existing mobile contacts onto Outlook, Outlook Express on the PC, or Address Book or Entourage on the Mac. To activate your iPhone 3G Insert your current SIM card into your iPhone 3G using the SIM ejector tool found in your iPhone 3G box. Connect your iPhone 3G to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC (not on the keyboard) using the cable included in the box. iTunes opens automatically. Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to activate iPhone 3G and sync your contacts, calendars, music, photos, podcasts, videos, email accounts, and web bookmarks. |

An O2 spokesperson has confirmed that the activation process for the iPhone 3G will be different from the original iPhone. Users will need to activate the phone in an Apple, O2, or Carphone Warehouse store, a process which should take about 15 minutes on average. Activation via iTunes will not be possible with the iPhone 3G. Because of that, you will not be able to buy an iPhone through the Web sites of either O2 or Apple. |
That sucks

I have decided i'm going to get one and then i can email Dave from anywhere i like. :hi:

Here;s the deal, I've lined up a 2nd hand iPhone to buy but was chatting to someone who works at the o2 shop who says my o2 sim won't work in an iPhone because:
-the iPhone will be registered to someone else (a different contract [an iPhone contract] -the sim is sealed in an iPhone My contract can't be renewed till jan so that's not an option, can anyone clarify for me cos i really want one of these bad boys. |
The sim won't be 'sealed' as such - you should be able to remove it.
As for the contract, worth giving o2 a call and seeing if anything can be done. |
rang the upgrade line earlier. 18 month contract, can't change anything till january.
|
Quote:
Firstly the iPhone will no longer be registered to someone else if they have upgraded to the new model. O2 are clear about this and are informing existing users that they can pass on their phone to be used with O2. Secondly they obviously haven't got a clue about the iPhone if they think the sim is sealed in an iPhone, because it isn't. The access door is located on the top of the iPhone between the headphone socket and the power switch. Just push a paperclip into the small access hole and the sim card pops up. Regarding contract renewal, O2 will cease an existing O2 contract when you register an iPhone and start a new 18 month contract from that point. If you are already on an 18 month contract with O2 then the end date wont even change. From O2:- Don't need 2 iPhones! We want to make sure you find a good home for your old iPhone once you upgrade. If you've a friend, colleague or family member they can use it as a phone by choosing any of the three options below. If they're on an existing O2 18-month minimum term contract, they can just transfer onto a Pay Monthly tariff for iPhone*. The end date of their contract will stay the same. Once their tariff has been transferred, they just need to connect to iTunes to activate the iPhone. If they're an O2 business customers, they'll need to move onto a current business tariff with an iPhone Bolt On and will be able to keep their existing contract term*. Once their tariff has been transferred, they just need to connect to iTunes to activate the iPhone. To arrange this they'll need to contact Business Customer Services. Existing O2 Pay & Go customers can use their current O2 Pay & Go SIM card or new customers can join O2 by getting a free Pay & Go iPhone SIM card from an O2 store. Then add the unlimited Web and Wi-Fi iPhone Bolt On (£10 a month). The only thing that does not work with this option is the Visual Voicemail. * Tariff migration rules apply. |

My mate got told the same thing, can't upgrade till september... probably about the same time as I'll eventually get one!
|
O2 do seem to be making a balls up of this...
Ordered a handset on monday, got a confirmation email back, rang today to get an update was told it was actually not an order but a "pre-order". The email said delivery within 5 working days transpires it is actually 10 working days. As it is a business account they told me it takes 3/4 days just to go through the credit check (even though Vodafone and T-Mobile both turned me around in the shop) |
