I was just told by someone that if iOS 8 is causing your iphone problems. Back up, restore phone to factory settings and then restore from your last backup, then the performance should improve. Does that make sense? Was also told to 'take everything off you don't need'. Not sure that would make much difference.

Firstly charge it overnight through a wall port and see if that helps if its been left in a drawer for a while the batter will be completely drained.

How old is it? If it is less than 5 years and its a battery issue you can legally take it back and say They need to replace it due to EU regulations. I luckily bought mine from Apple went into a store and said this and they just swapped it over for a swollen battery. As long as it doesnt look like its been thrown around you should be ok. But you are supposed to take/send it back to wherever you got it apple/o2/virgin etc

Thanks, but it is the update that's the problem. Patience has evaporated and "restore" is the only option now.

It's not a difficult job to change the battery yourself - plenty of info on Ifixit.com

HELP!!!!!
I gave my son my old iPhone 4s and told him to wait until I got home to clean it up. He didn't switched on Icloud and proceeded to delete all the contacts on the phone. the cloud thought I didn't want them anymore and proceeded to delete them from my phone and the Mac. Unfortunately not knowing he had done this I backed up my phone to iTunes with all the contacts deleted. When I do a restore I get a tantalising glimpse of all my old contacts before it defaults to the mucked up version. has anyone used any software to grab this data back. I have seen posts from people who say some of the software out there is a rip-off and doesn't work and that the reviews are all spam. Can anyone recommend or point me in the right direction please?

Isle of Wight 20-01-2015 09:20 PM

OK I managed to restore the old phone which had a back up of most of the contacts so I restored that. Stopped it updating and manually put in the contacts on the Mac. SO big panic over. However I now have another problem. I have switched off the cloud on the old phone so that will stop it effecting anything on either my phone or the Mac. BUT... The contact when put in the mac are appearing on the iPhone but any contacts that have been put on the phone are not appearing on the mac. Both have cloud switched on. Any ideas? Thx

Hedgehog 21-01-2015 02:30 AM

The whole cloud thing has be baffled.

I think this is to do with the default address book the device you are adding the contacts too, is using.
I had assimilated issue between MacBook and iPad. Perhaps check each address book to see whee they are saving new contacts to. Hope that makes sense.

Is the camera on a 5s really crap? I can't get any sort of decent picture with it. They all come out too dark

Maybe the settings are all wrong but I don't know what settings I need. I just want a setting that will take a reasonable picture when I just shoot and go.

If you look in iTunes you back up your iphone from any saved back up , it doesn't have to be the latest one

What's app not working properly as it shows message on phone screen but it's not on the actual what's app message?. Tried to open emails earlier and that shuts down before it opens.
Any help hugely appreciated.

Assuming your using os8, when you take a photo touch the screen onwhat you want the focus to be on, such as a face, a greeny yellow square wll pop up - when this is up you can adjust the brightness bu moving up or make darker by moving down, to zoom move your finger off and pinch.

Probably describes it a lot better here though...

Your welcome!

Do you have a case? Some cases shade the camera hole or reflect the flash. If you have a case, I would take it out and see if you have the same issue, if you do get a new case!

Anyone more iPhone or iOS savy than me able to help?

I am having storage issues on my phone. I have deleted over 1000 photos and 50 videos, have no music on there and yet somehow I am still hitting 12GB (which is full). But this morning, I had 10GB on there after going on a deleting spree. However, it is back up to 12GB already and I have not saved anything on there!

And in terms of space, I have been inti "manage storage" and having added up, I don't know how it has got to 12GB:

1.3GB of photos
2123GB of everything else

What else is taking up space? I understand I have 12GB because it is a 16GB device with 4GB of iOS.

kolinkins 04-03-2015 04:44 PM

In the last 2 days, I have deleted 4GB of photos and apps I just worked out. But it has crept up to 12GB again. I do not get it

Tomo 04-03-2015 04:48 PM

Check "Deleted" photo file and empty it.

kolinkins 04-03-2015 04:53 PM

Just since posting this thread (and not using my phone) available space has gone from 100MB to 12MB

Something is eating my phone!

Conger 04-03-2015 05:05 PM

Things like Twitter and Facebook are memory hogs and use a cache. If you use them a lot and end up with full memory, close them and do a hard reset. You'll free up memory for a while.

If you don't use them, not sure!

kolinkins 04-03-2015 05:20 PM

They are using 88 and 92MB respectively.

It makes no sense

In memory useage, there is a total of 2300MB and 1.3GB. Why is that filling up 12GB?

Ferris Bueller 04-03-2015 05:50 PM

Kolinkins- what does the Storage screen show on device?

http://i.imgur.com/JpeLBcKl.png?1

kolinkins 04-03-2015 06:01 PM

Used 12 GB. Available 0

Earlier today it was used 10gb. And it's crept back up to 12 without me saving anything

And the screen above shows 1.3GB Photos and everything else adds up to 2300MB. No idea where rest of space is

Stavros 69 04-03-2015 06:49 PM

Are you using icloud? Are you syncing automatically? If so it may be putting stuff on your phone when there is space to do so. It shouldnt be that aggressive though.

However I would suggest you turn it off and on again, :D but im sure you have done that already.

IN which case I would back up your phone on a computer and reboot it. Somewhwere along the lines its got confused.

Nope The only thing you can do is set up a folder called CRAPple and put all the apple app junk in it.
I have Tips, news stand, ibooks, passbook, podcasts, iTunes store in mine. Others may find them useful but they are just a waste of space and storage as far as I'm concerned.

Hedgehog 21-03-2015 10:01 PM

Yep - I slid it into Extras along with a couple of others like you say.

So far today, my NBC Sports Extra wouldn't authenticate me, and my cycling App has changed to Kilometers for no apparent reason.

Might be a coincidence, but I'm paranoid!

I think I forgot to mention - I upgraded to iOS 8.2 yesterday.

cranesparkeagle 22-03-2015 01:06 AM

You should be able to transfer them via usb, as long as you have a computer and a lead

montstar 29-03-2015 08:15 PM

Just had to sort an issue with my other half's phone where she had run out of space, mostly it seemed due to photos. Although there were clearly only 30 pics on her phone it was saying there was 4 gigs worth. after resetting etc nothing seemed to work i tried this neat little hack, which I thought I would post here a, becuause it might help people and b, I might need it again and this is an easy way to find it! :D

Why does my iOS device say I have more photos than I can find?

Dropped my iphone 6 on Friday night and now it won't turn on. It already had a smashed screen from when I dropped it at the work Christmas party last December.

Have booked a appointment with a 'Genius' at the Apple Store tomorrow.

What are the chances of them replacing it?

I was pleasantly surprised to find my iPhone was covered on home insurance. My other half spilt a tiny bit of water on an iPhone 4s, genius bar wouldn't touch it, home insurance gave me an iPhone 6. Worth asking them if you have any!

I know it's all horses for courses, but is it worth spending the extra to get the 6 plus or is the 6 more than good enough? The 6 plus looks good (and my preference) but is big, but is it too big for general day to day use and for the standard pocket size?

The Omen 19-06-2015 12:37 PM

Anyone else suffering from the iPhone shutdown text message?

Seemed to really hit my school today with lots of students sending it to each other. Can't believe the only solution is to turn messaging off. Terrible 'bug' to allow this.

james powell 19-06-2015 12:49 PM

When the phone turns back on, double click the home button to bring up all the apps open a apps and close the messaging app. If it is closed then go into messages and the only way to correct it is to swipe on the person that sent it and delete the whole message conversation from them.

I've got the 6 and I think it's a good size. The 6 plus just kind of looks and feels a bit too big but that's just my personal preference.

In saying that, if I had the 6 plus I'd probably tell you to get the 6 plus because I'd think its great because it'd be the one I was used to.

So just get whichever, and when you have it, you won't feel too bothered that you didn't get the other one.

Full steps here. Different version

1. Ask Siri to "read unread messages."
2. Use Siri to reply to the malicious message. After you reply, you'll be able to open Messages again.
3. In Messages, swipe left to delete the entire thread. Or tap and hold the malicious message, tap More, and delete the message from the thread

You can correct it by sending a picture to the person that sent the code to you (as long as you know who sent it). Do it through the camera roll as it won't let you actually get onto the messages app.

I think the two flashes are too far apart the first flash closes the pupils then the second flash takes the picture without red eye. On a normal camera they are close together. On second thoughts It may be to help auto focus in poor light.

Not sure where to post this, so I'll try here.

I bought my wife an iPhone last week, and today I was pairing it with the phone in her car. (her old phone had been working just fine in her car).

I got the phone paired OK, but in the phone book it now has every Contact listed that I and she have, not just hers. Yet on her phone in the contacts there are just her contacts.

I've tried all sorts of combinations of iCloud, Contact on this Phone, and turning of groups etc.

This really is a case of being too smart for it's own good.

Any ideas oh wondrous BBS?

I like to keep down to 20 quid more or less which I can now get on an EE upgrade but only with a 5c. The 8GB on my 4 is now running out regularly so I don't want another 2 years on 8GB.

Yes. Go to Settings, iTunes and App Store and just enter your iTunes account (mine is a hotmail account) where it says Apple ID.

Though you can have this for your iCloud account also (I do) there is nothing that forces you to have the same iCloud and iTunes account on your phone

Blind_Eagle 01-07-2015 11:06 PM

If you download the latest version of iOS apparently you automatically get a free three month trial of Apple music when you agree to the T's & C's.

Anyone know if this is one of those schemes that you need to actively cancel or you may be charged monthly for x months?

Or do you need to actively opt in?

Couldn't find anything out there and I'm 55 years of age, so don't have enough years left to fully read Apple's terms and conditions pertaining to this minor update.

Imajica 01-07-2015 11:36 PM

You can opt out of the auto renewal as soon as you upgrade.

Once you are in Apple Music, select the icon in the top left, tape view Apple ID, scroll down to subscriptions and click manage. Click on Apple music then you can turn off auto renewal from there

I've been using it today and very impressed, easy to use and good integration

Change Bank Account, Password, User Name, and if necessary, your address. 😎💸

Not an urgent issue but an annoying one here.

All my apps are up to up to date, yet that annoying little red notification on the corner of the App Store logo will not **** off. It's stuck on the number 6 and will not disappear.

Anyone got any bright ideas?

Do you have two accounts (I have US and UK apps, and have to switch between to update both)?

Otherwise do a hard reset.

Maybe a silly question, but. I have just ordered a 6 plus it upgrade from my old 4 that is arriving later today. Is it just a case of swapping my SIM cards over to get all my current apps/music/settings/photos etc or how else do I get all my existing stuff from one phone to the other?

I'm a bit of a dump ass in this regard, but I think either iTunes or iCloud will take care of it.

I'm not sure phones even have SIM cards now do they?

It is odd, as my credit card long expired, but they seem to have no trouble taking from my new one... yet when I go to buy something it tells me my card has expired. Same card number obviously.

Just seems rules are made to be broken when it suits certain circumstances.

Back up your phone to iCloud (settings, iCloud, backup, backup now)

Turn new phone on. It was ask you for your iCloud details and put all your apps, etc, on.

You can also plug your phone into your computer and back up to that, then plug new phone in to computer and set up from that. It's just a case of whichever you prefer doing.

My preference / recommendation is to do a full itunes backup via PC / MAC and then restore onto the new phone. I believe I am right in saying that an icloud backup doesn't backup all your data / some is missed out. From memory its photos.

Others may know different - but I am just letting you know my preference. Cheers

Thank you all. It's been 5 years since I bought my 4 so are new to all this as I've never gone from one iPhone to another as the 4 was my first Apple phone. Last time I tried to backup to iCloud it failed as I ran out of space so needed to buy more, which I didn't at that time. I am also going from a 32gb to 16gb. I use probably about a quarter (if that) of my music on my old phone. Is it possible to back up everything and transfer that but NOT the music as I'm sure most of my storage is used up with music that I don't listen to?

Yes, but the best way to do that is to do a full back up to a computer. Do you have a PC/Mac with iTunes on it (and have you ever backed up to a computer before)?

montstar 03-07-2015 08:28 AM

Or maybe it's your system software that needs updated 8.4 just came out

I can use my work computer but It was not the original computer I used to start up my 4. I don't have that computer anymore. Can I adopt my work computer as the master computer now for the 4 as I thought you could only have one computer which is the first computer you originally start the phone up with?

I think you can switch but can't recall how. I definitely changed computers somehow!

montstar 03-07-2015 08:55 AM

I think you log into iTunes iCloud and it has a list of computers under preferences or settings

andyocpfc 03-07-2015 09:21 AM

Cool - Thank you. I shall have a play.

Just one account. I'll try a reset, cheers.

How long does back up to iCloud normally take - mine seems to be going for ages and the green bar doesn't seem to be moving anywhere? It's an iPhone 4 32gb.

Golf Boy 03-07-2015 08:14 PM

Backed up iphone 6 less than two weeks ago and now want to restore that to a new machine but it says the software is too old? Can anyone enlighten? Why don't these things just work.

Golf Boy 03-07-2015 09:09 PM

.

Golf Boy 03-07-2015 09:09 PM

It's now taking hours and hours for a software opdate from itunes for the new phone. Is it being naive to back up the phone, get a new phone and expect It to work fairly painlessly.

ollie_porter 04-07-2015 09:13 AM

Apple Music is a great concept but I'm having a few issues that I really hope they sort out!

I can't transfer old tracks I've downloaded onto my phone if iCloud library is turned on. And these old tracks don't show up when I search for them on my phone (as they probably should if iCloud library is on when connected to wifi)...

I also can't 'add to my music' on my phone without making it available offline (downloading it). These songs will then appear in my iTunes library on mac- the only bit of syncing that seems to be working.

If I add something to ' my music ' on the mac, it then won't appear on the phone.

Quite frustrating as the idea is great! And if they sort this out I'd pay the £10 subscription.

Anyone else having issues?

andyocpfc 05-07-2015 10:46 AM

Anyone know of a decent, reliable app that you can use to transfer contacts from one iphone to another without using iTunes or iCloud as in losing the will to live with those?

Away 05-07-2015 11:32 AM

Just did a search on iPhone backup in the App Store and the first one that came up looked like a simple solution if you use email on the phone.

Not a recommendation - just a thought. Thankfully I'm not having problems with iCloud ATM.
