Thanks - I found two individual apps to transfer all contacts and photos costing £2.29 in total. A bargain as I was spending hours and hours trying to get iTunes and iCloud to work. :p

looking forward to the iphone 6s/7 or whatever its going to be called sometime in September just the time my upgrade is due.

Adlerhorst 09-07-2015 01:08 PM

So took my phone into Apple just now to see if they could fix the touch ID.

Was quoted £99, it's out of warranty. Which I agreed to. And then this happened.

"Did you purchase the phone from Apple?" Why yes, yes I did.

"Do you have the receipt?". <trawl emails>. Yes. Yes I have, **** me I spent £709 on a phone.

"Excellent, even though it is out of warranty we'll repair it for free, and if the repair doesn't work we'll give a new phone for free. Come back in four hours".

Wow. When did Apple start paying attention to UK consumer law?

Brett 09-07-2015 02:36 PM

Good news but they are are still going downhill. Maybe not on the sales sheet but in terms of the magic and the day-to-day stuff.

It is awful. Spent all day yesterday adding tracks to a playlist only to find it was empty today.

Spotify has nothing to worry about from a usability perspective.

Ferris Bueller 09-07-2015 09:21 PM

Apple Music is just awful. Firstly it screwed up all my album artwork on my devices when it synced to the iTunes Cloud Library, sometimes even choosing random artists. I can't add songs, albums or playlists using the remote app so I have to add them directly on the mac mini that I use as a media server and even they are not even visible in the remote app unless you download them locally to the Mac first. I'm definitely sticking with Spotify + Airfoil for my home streaming setup.

And don't even get me started on the Watch. No way that would have been released in it's current state if Jobs were still alive.

Stavros 69 10-07-2015 02:16 PM

I hate it the more i use it.

Don't forget to turn the data off for it.

Its actually European law, they told me about it with my phone when the battery started expanding, in the uk they only have to give a years warranty, whereas according to the EU it should be 5 years. So as long as when they look at it, they can tell its not user damage they need to fix or swap out. I was told to quote eu law xyz no the phone, and they swapped mine no probs

Hedgehog 11-07-2015 03:14 PM

I've had my iPhone since around last November and average about 150 MB's of data use a month of my allotted 1 GB.

I get my wife an iPhone and notice than in the first week of her having it that data usage shot up to 1.05 GB... I found out she has been listening to the radio station feature in the Music App for hours on end.

Also all her crap has synced on to my phone and iPad. I really dislike the iCloud sometimes.

Stavros 69 12-07-2015 08:48 PM

So annoying that in the music app it has taken off how many tracks that are in your playlist and how many you are through.
Such a small thing but I liked it.

Is it really my internet speed that is the problem?

CT_Palace 13-07-2015 01:35 AM

yep, judging by the speedtest you did a few months ago. (which means it's either the speed (or lack-of) of your data contract or the wifi router, which btw always knocks off a big chunk of the data speed that arrives from your telephone line).

I'm responsible for all of the gadgets in my house, so thats 5 X adults, if you count the 17YO as an Adult. Apple products have caused me the most grief out of everything I've owned. 2 Mac books have karked it on my daughter and I can't tell you how many Iphones I've had to take back to be repaired. I'm sitting here tonight wondering why a Iphone 5s with a 3 month old battery won't hold a charge for more than 6 hours. Hardware fault most likely caused by a dropped phone and a replaced screen, how flimsy are these bloody things.

Wish the bastewards were out of my life....

As for Itunes what a fxxxing joke. Their best product is the only one that I use, The Ipod Classic, except for Itunes, Has anyone ever used media monkey to manage it ? I know you can but It seems a pain in the arse to set it all up.

Smoz 15-08-2015 01:51 AM

Any idea why I am unable to see images in tweets on my iPhone 5? It's running the up to date version of iOS

I don't think it is a problem with the apps that I use for Twitter, whether I use the Twitter app or Echofon to access my tweets the images aren't showing, just a blank box (both apps are using their latest updates too). I have tried shutting down and restarting my phone. This problem started a couple of days ago.

It makes no difference if I am on wifi or 4G. However if I tether my iPad from my phone the images show as normal.

FrenchImmersion 15-08-2015 02:07 AM

IIRC there was an update very recently where photos will not load on twitter automatically to save data. You have to go in to the settings on Twitter to change it.

Hi all,

I'm having issues with my laptop recognising my iphone. I've tried following all of the tips on the apple website but no success.. When going in to the Device Manager to try and review it, it is completely blank?

Anyone got any ideas?

CT_Palace 15-08-2015 04:45 PM

Sounds a bit simple but have you checked the cable?

ed_glenn 15-08-2015 05:02 PM

Yeah i've used a few different cables. It recognizes it enough to make a noise once connected, but that's where the action ends unfortunately..

Hedgehog 25-10-2015 08:06 PM

Very odd... I just updated my phone to iOS 9.1 and then did my wife's.

They are the same phone and had the same revision iOS on them, but hers took a lot longer, and asked a bunch of different questions when opening it back up after the download.

These things really are a life unto their own.

"Excellent, even though it is out of warranty we'll repair it for free, and if the repair doesn't work we'll give a new phone for free. Come back in four hours".

Wow. When did Apple start paying attention to UK consumer law?

I booked a slot at the nearest Apple Store to take my iPhone back as the front camera lens was becoming obscured by one of the filters becoming dislodged. Was told it was out of warranty so I mentioned UK consumer law. They politely told me to take it back to where I purchased it whereupon I pointed out I had actually purchased it from Apple and produced the receipt. They could not find my phone on their records and then it occurred to me, within a week of buying the phone I dropped it and broke the screen. My insurance supplied a replacement phone the next day and I didn't thing any more of it. It turns out that they didn't update Apple about the handset change.

As a consequence Apple said that the phone I had wasn't purchased from them and that I should pursue my insurance company over any repair. They would however, as a gesture of goodwill, replace it for a mere £273.

On my return I spoke to my insurance company who stated that the phone they had supplied was just out of its warranty period and, as I hadn't bought it from them, the extended warranty offered under consumer law didn't apply.

£700 on a phone that is under 13 months old and I appeared to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Eventually, after much discussion my insurance company agreed that they had "possibly" made a mistake with their records and agreed to replace it for my excess - £75.

To conclude, in my experience Apple continue to use any means at their disposal to avoid actually replacing an iPhone if there is any way they can. :veryangry

As an aside, that was my first ever visit to an Apple Store and what a hateful experience it was. Never again.

Tomo 03-11-2015 09:05 AM

Right, hoping someone can help.

My iPhone 6 is not notifying me of text messages. Won't give me a notification, doesn't even show the number of text messages in the app.

On Sunday, I did turn on my old iPhone to see if it still worked. It did for 5 minutes, before crashing and now won't turn on so don't know if this has anything to do with it...

Probably not. Well I am sure you would get a guarantee, but in America.

I am sure they would look at it for you (and then charge you for any repairs etc).

karl.eldridge 04-11-2015 11:58 AM

Do I have to get a specific model or does it matter?

iPhone 6S+ 64GB is £699.00
iPhone 6S+ 64GB is $849.00 + $73.86 Tax = $922 (£598) - But this comes without the standard 1 Year UK Warranty.

So is it worth saving £100? (not including claiming the tax back if I wanted to)

Adlerhorst 04-11-2015 12:20 PM

You will have a warranty, just an American one. I doubt the UK and the US entities that make the sale are the same so if you tried to claim on it in the UK they'll simply say you didn't buy it through us sir, please take it up with who you purchased it from, which will cost you a plane ticket.

As for the rest. You almost certainly cannot claim the sales tax back. Sales tax is at state level not federal, and only two states (Texas and another one which I forget) offer refunds for international travellers. So unless you happen to be in one of them, it is a real cost to you.

Also you run the risk of the UK catching you on the way back if you don't declare it (you are supposed to as it is over the limit). That will cost you another £116.50 if they do. You won't get a discount for the US tax you have paid.

Also you are only saving £100.

Adlerhorst 04-11-2015 12:40 PM

Also you would need to make sure you get the correct model. I think the two different types of US iphone both support the UK LTE bands now but best to check

http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/

Heb 7:4 04-11-2015 12:40 PM

If you wanted to you could buy AppleCare in the UK within 60 days for £109 to give yourself a three year warranty, but I'm pretty sure Apple cover you in any country so long as you bought the phone direct from them.

Walk into an Apple Store and ask.

Adlerhorst 04-11-2015 12:44 PM

Apple warranties are definitely not international. If you want to get it covered you have to go down the apple care route

Heb 7:4 04-11-2015 12:51 PM

I'm pretty certain apple care (cheaper in the US) is international. I'd be surprised if the free one year one wasn't too. A London Apple Store genuis bar telling you sorry you have to go to New York? They'd just give you a replacement and say have a nice day.

Adlerhorst 04-11-2015 12:55 PM

Apple care is international. The warranty isn't.

Golf Boy 04-11-2015 12:59 PM

Apple care?

kolinkins 04-11-2015 01:04 PM

We have bought iPads (a 2, a mini and an Air 2) from the US, have had to take 2 in to Apple Store (Kingston) and had no issues with getting help/replacement. Don't have Apple Care

I'm sorry if I sound like a cracked record... but iCloud drives me frigging nuts!

I deleted "a message" on my wife's phone, and it deleted the whole history of the conversation from day one.

I tried to restore it, and iCloud did not include text messages. So I did the iTunes back-up which was from July, and now it has lost every thing since that date.

I've lost my technical mo-jo! :sob:

Away 18-11-2015 09:20 PM

Can someone talk me through switching an iPhone 5 from (possibly) EE to Post Office.

I've just bought a second hand iphone 5 which the girl selling thinks is locked to EE, at least she was using it on an EE contract and has just upgraded. I think she's dealt directly with EE, not Carphone Warehouse or whatever. That's ok - I'm prepared to unlock by using a PAYG sim - and in fact she said she would be prepared to get it unlocked if I pay her back. (There are no other complications - it has been reset.) But I thought there was a possibility it would unlock in any case after the contract period is up.

It seems I need a SIM to set it up and/or test for network lock. Unfortunately, I don't have a nano-SIM in the house (all phones on standard or micro).

So Q1 - can I use any network to test this? I'm worried about this automatic locking to the first SIM it comes across? ie, if I've lucked out and it's unlocked, but then I go and lock it to a random SIM. I didn't think this was the case with network-provided iphones, but didn't want to end up locking it to the wrong network.

If it turns out it's locked I'll want to get an EE PAYG SIM so I can pay the £8.99 out of the credit. But I have to get {some other} SIM to check whether it's locked. Because I've bought this to replace another handset on an existing phone, this {some other} SIM won't be the SIM I want to end up with.

So, as mentioned, I bought it to replace my son's phone which he has on Post Office PAYG. (This is a great deal because it's PAYG - no shock bills - and it has a recurring monthly £5 bundle which suits him and is carried on the EE network which is the only one that reliably gets reception indoors at home.)

Presumably, I have to get POMobile to send us a replacement SIM (because existing one is wrong size), but presumably as soon as I activate it the old one is useless.

Another couple of complications. This is a Christmas present and ideally I want him to have it all ready and working on Christmas morning.

And we're spending Christmas away from home.

And one last thing. Do I need to connect to iTunes to activate the SIM/Phone?

At the moment I am thinking:

Test phone with ASDA PAYG nano SIM.
If locked, get EE PAYG nano SIM and book unlock through EE.
Arrange delivery of replacement POMobile PAYG nano SIM.
IF(no need for iTunes)
Don't put in until Christmas Day
ELSE
Put in on Christmas Eve and connect to iTunes before going to sister's in London.

I'd be grateful for any (reliable) guidance. Am I unnecessarily confusing myself?

Rizza 19-11-2015 11:43 AM

Your best bet would be to get an EE and post office SIMS
and try the post office first.
If that doesn't work it's locked to EE.
If the phone is unlocked it stays unlocked so doesn't matter what sim you put in there.

You can if your feeling crafty cut down a normal sim to put in the phone but maybe it would be easier to just go and get one of each.

You can set up and use iPhones without ever connecting to a pc.

Away 19-11-2015 05:57 PM

Thank you Rizza, that removes a number of variables.

It does appear to be locked. I tried a Vodafone SIM (you have to order PO SIMs online).

Next challenge: unlocking.

Popped into an EE shop and they said, since I had an account (though it's unconnected) I could unlock by phoning Customer Services.

Customer Services said, as it wasn't connected to my account I had to get the previous owner to unlock it, or I could use the online form if I have the phone number and IMEI (I do).

The online form says, as it's a second hand handset you have to ... you guessed it ... go into a shop.

Hedgehog 02-12-2015 02:44 AM

OK... can someone put an old man out of his misery....

I noticed my iPhone was not delivering my e-mails until I opened my mail App.

By searching Google I now realize this is a Push verses Fetch thing - I really don't know which is best for getting instant e-mails when they are sent. It would appear from Google that Push is best/quickest.

After making sure all the mail setting are to Push, it is still not working until I open the App.

When I got home I laid my wife's and my phone side by side and made sure the settings were identical, which they were. I then sent an e-mail from the desktop computer to both e-mail addresses. Her iPhone got the test straight away, as did my iPad, but my iPhone still did not get it until I opened the mail icon.

We have the same iOS 9.1, and every setting on the damn phone is the same.

HELP! - I hate shit like this.

As I had just rolled out of bed, and they would be dressed up and ready to go out half the time, it always seemed a bit unfair. I would be in my PJ's and they would be all clean and shinny.

Plus I found it really distracting, and actually hard to hold a meaningful conversation.

I think this is a case of nice technology, but can be put on the back burner.

Use FaceTime constantly when travelling

Kylie_Tracey 27-12-2015 12:39 PM

Facetime is particularly brilliant, use to call my kids daily, miles ahead of Skype

Hedgehog 27-12-2015 03:43 PM

Yep, I suspect people with kids would appreciate it more than me.

Or people with any family abroad they actually like

Biggineagle 28-12-2015 12:30 AM

Gosh, people still have Iphones?? Quaint. :)

Trist 28-12-2015 06:06 AM

iphone users

Use it a lot to talk to my parents since they moved north.

I've got a little nipper on the way next year and I'm guessing I'll be using it even more once she arrives. Excellent tech and as said above, far better quality than Skype. Not sure why that is the case.

C) Ask Siri to beatbox for you
D) Enjoy

Can someone assist in resolving an annoying issue for me please. My iPhone keeps saying I have one email on the app on the home page yet I don't have any. How can I resolve this? I've turned it on and off but to no avail.

you might have an unread email somewhere, especially if you have multiple accounts

Probably one unread in a thread of conversations.

anything on icloud or outlook?

knowlesyUCLA 18-02-2016 03:54 PM

Try going into the Mail option on the Setting and removing your email accounts that are synced to the app, then adding them again.

andyocpfc 18-02-2016 07:46 PM

Superb - thank you. I went into settings and email and deleted my account and started again by logging in and it worked [emoji4].

Can anyone offer any help with this? Have always resolved any problems I've had with a phone with a google search of the problem but this time nothing seems to work! Plugged my iPhone 6s into my laptop yesterday, itunes loaded and said there was an update (ios 9.0.2? I think), selected to update but at some point during/after update my phone appeared frozen - it was locked to the start up screen with the apple logo. It wouldn't turn off by the power button and I can only turn it off by holding the power and home button at the same time.

Now everytime I switch it on it is just stuck on the startup screen and doesn't get any further. When I connect to itunes with the USB it powers up, start screen loads but nothing else happens. Turning off holding down the power button + home...then releasing the power button whilst it loads prompts an attempted restore of the phone. In itunes it reads, 'extracting software' then 'waiting for iphone'...the phone has a blue screen but then comes up with the apple logo and progress bar below then itunes says 'verifying restore with apple' and then it stops and I get the error message 'the iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (6)'.

Followed some advice online but nothing seems to resolve it and given up! Anyone else had a similar issue and can offer a solution?

Have you had the screen and or home button replaced at any time?

Bognor Eagle 24-02-2016 07:45 AM

Yes, I replaced my daughters screen with one that had the home button in place. It's easy I looked at some YouTube videos, orderd the parts from eBay then two screw at the bottom of the home button edge, small suction puller old screen out new in, works perfectly. In total £30 and 1/2 hour which now I know would take 15-20 mins

PoolKing 24-02-2016 08:12 AM

No not had the screen or home button replaced - only upgraded 2 months ago and been fine until now

Update to my phone problem above: Ended up booking the phone in at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. Took it in and they took it away to see what the problem was, 5 mins later the bloke came back and told me he couldn't diagnose the fault or fix it but that it shouldn't have happened and he gave me a brand new phone. Excellent customer service from Apple :p:lux:

Remember the last iPhone? Well we made it smaller like they used to be!

Remember the last iPad? Well we made it smaller like they used to be!

Earth shattering stuff.

Kylie_Tracey 22-03-2016 09:44 AM

is there much more smartphones of any brand are going to do that will be earth shattering? this will be my last iPhone when this contract expires next year, happy with the handset though a 6S plus and I hope it will last 2 more years beyond that, then it will be purchase of a far cheaper handset with an all you can eat data plan, I very rarely make calls and would need about a 100 texts per month after.
