Is slingbox the app that allows you to watch freeview channels?

Is it any good? Smooth?

Niceaction 13-05-2009 01:57 PM

You need the slingbox hardware connected to your tv. The app allows you to watch and control that tv over the net.
If your using the app over wifi then the picture quality should be very good, but as I said, I haven't tested yet.

Teemo 13-05-2009 02:10 PM

Oh right, thanks for the info. All sounds a bit too much for me. I'll stick to my TV for the time being.

Want to get an ipod touch for Leo to stop him hammering my phone all the time, dont spose anyone works near an 02 shop as they are clearing out 1st Gen's for £90?

£18 for the application is ******* ridiculous.

It's also ridiculous that Slingbox isn't supporting the 'old' hardware.

hong_kong_hg 13-05-2009 09:10 PM

The old hardware isn't officially supported but it does work. Price is steep and lack of 3G is disappointing, but I have a classic and it works fine, other than the aspect ratio having to be letterbox and not as big on the screen as it could be.

I can't believe I got excited about Palace Radio and then had my hopes dashed within 10 seconds. Meh.

I often go to bed listening to crazy shock jocks from across the pond. The other day I listened to some New York radio station ripping into Jaqui Smith. Made me laugh that she was getting both barrels even in the US media. And they use language you'd never hear on radio over here. I was chuckling to myself as they were labelling her a witch and a ******.

Without 3G its pointless. I have had it running fine on my BB Curve even over the Edge network. Anywhere I would use it with 3G, (hotel, airport etc) I have my laptop anyway!

I've been playing with the Slingbox app all night. It's very nice and has no stutter. The Man U Wigan match tonight flowed very nicely without any lag.
If you have a jailbroken phone, you can download Tricker3G to make the iphone believe it is using wifi when you are using a 3g connection.
This makes it really worthwhile in my opinion. The picture quality deteriorates slightly as you might expect, but it is still highly watchable.

The only downside is the long pause between scrolling channels. I have now set up a bunch of favourites to make that much quicker.

£18 is expensive for an app, but for me it is worth it.

Me too - you persuaded me to try it. This is the Review I have just submitted to the Application Store:

Quote:

So - at long last we have the application for the Slingbox. First - the price. How can Slingmedia justify a price tag of this magnitude (£17.99 in the UK at the time of writing)? I appreciate that the Application has taken a while to develop, but every user will already have purchased a Slingbox (which is not cheap), so to be asked for this amount more is outrageous. Compare this to the Orb Live application at £5.99 for example (which streams media from your PC - including live TV if you have a tuner) and the contrast is stark.

Once installed it does work very well over a Wireless Network - but that's it. The second problem is that the Application will not work over 3g (note that Orb Live works fine over 3g).

I should also mention that I have tried this application using my old Slingbox Classic, and it works perfectly - although the Classic is not supported officially. Cynics might suggest that the lack of support for the 'old' hardware may be designed to encourage upgrading. It's not too hard to draw this conclusion, as the Sling Media website urges those with the old systems to 'upgrade' - and offers discounts for those willing to fork out yet more cash.

I am giving the Application three stars, because it functions very well in its limited capacity over the Wireless Networks. It would obviously get more if it was priced a little more keenly and - crucially - if it worked over the 3g Networks.

Niceaction 14-05-2009 07:04 AM

That pretty much sums it up for me. 3G is absolutely necessary, and the price is off putting for most.

It is very nice once you've got it going though!

Slingbox are literally having laugh

Hopng sky will port anytime to iPhone soon

Has anyone else tried the new Print n Share Application? It's not cheap, but so far as I am aware, it's the only really easy to use print application for the IPhone. It works very well - although even if you have a network printer (as I do), you still need your PC (or Mac, or Ubuntu or whatever) switched on to use it. You may print from any source on the IPhone, including web pages, pictures and documents.

Surely this will be in the update later in the year though? Might wait and see if it is

Speaking of Slingbox, I went and got one of these yesterday. Works fine with 3g signal on a jailbreak (broke?), phone with Tricker3g.

Actually, really quite impressed.

It's madness that they haven't (initially), released it to work over 3g. I'm assuming it's more to do with the 'unlimited / fair use' contracts that mobile operators chuck around?

How good is this in reality though, seeing as I can't even get a radio station to play for more than a couple of minutes whilst on the move.

wickham_eagle 01-06-2009 01:22 PM
