Forgot to mention, i was on the phone to O2 earlier about my lost/stolen phone and he mentioned that by September 3rd (my upgrade date) the 3G IPhone in white will be available, which should be pretty damn sweet!

As i can now get internet radio via the ipod and the remote app by apple i feel i can use it as a replacement for a hifi system.

Was looking at the JBL On Site which seems more compact then those suggested so far. But 222 reviews for your recommendation says loads about the product imho.

Thanks :p

Be very careful a lot of the older accessories don't work on iPhone 3G. They have cripled the connector so although its physically the same it only accepts the USB 2.0 standard for charging at not the old Firewire design. Net effect is that although the thing will dock and you'll get sound it won't charge....bastards!

Ridcully 14-07-2008 11:54 PM

And here's why...

From a post on the apple support site:

..The Charging System…

Most chargers on the market today are designed to charge via USB or via 12v through the firewire portion of apple dock pins (pins 19,20 12V DC and pins 29,30 Ground). This was an easy choice for the manufacturers because your car is already a 12V based system that kept the charging solutions inexpensive to make. If they already had 12V available, why step it down to 5V to charge via the USB pins? Makes sense right? As you know, Apple has eliminated 12V charging from their newer units but has left a sensing circuit on the firewire pins just to tell you that your old device doesnt work anymore. Your existing chargers will not harm the Iphone, but they are certainly useless.

The new way to charge is through the USB pins on the Apple dock connector ( pin 16 USB GND, pin 23 USB Power 5 VDC, pin 25 USB Data negative, pin 27 USB Data positive ). BUT, you cannot just apply 5V to pin 23 and ground to pin 16. The Iphone is also sensing voltage on USB Data positive (approx 1.8v) and USB Data negative (approx 2.5V).

…The Audio System…

If you had an older gen Ipod like an Ipod Video then the audio outputs were real easy, it always put line out audio through the audio pins in the dock connector. The Iphone is a different animal. The audio and serial pins are still the same on the dock connector, BUUT, there is an accessroy pin (pin 21) that senses the type of accessory that is plugged in. If the correct resistance is NOT on pin 21 then the Iphone completely ignores the connection and does not redirect the audio to the dock. Thus most of your old Ipod Interfaces are now obsolete..

Everything that we've got in the house, AV adapter, Kensington Speaker Dock and car charger no longer works...

That sucks

GodstoneEagle 15-07-2008 08:56 PM

So who has the 3G who had the 1st gen and how do they compare?

Blind_Eagle 15-07-2008 11:57 PM

I've got neither as we speak. :(

I may be wrong Dave but I think that quote refers to the original iPhone and the incompatability between chargers for iPhones and other Apple products such as iPod etc.

AFAIK if a charger worked for a first gen iPhone then it will work with a 3G version.*

*Disclaimer. This information came from an Apple employee so it could well be complete bollox but I pass it on in good faith.

Hmm - I have had someone else tell me the I-Grove won't work with the 3G.

Hopefully I will get a V2 soon and can test in work

GodstoneEagle 16-07-2008 11:41 AM

Just recieved my iPhone :)

Question though, I have put my sim card in which has all my numbers on it and the iPhone is saying I have no contacts :(

GodstoneEagle 16-07-2008 12:04 PM

A venerable and kind chap who is upgrading to a 3G version of said phone.

Yep, complete bollocks :D

The 3G iPhone is the first one to have the 12V Firewire rail disabled. Most car chargers will not work as its much cheaper (easier) to do a 12V to 12V charge so unless you are lucky (or bought official products) it won't work. As I said earlier all the things I have for my families iProducts, Nano 1, 2, iPod classic IV do not work on the iPhone 3G. There are rumours of convertors but they will lose the aesthetics if they do happen.

Apparently Apple have been telling suppliers for three years that they were going to do this but this is the first product they have.

Near the bottom :

Please note: the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G will work with this speaker when your iPhone is used in flight mode only.

Potentially won't charge either but you'll have to test that one out as its a mixed bag compatibility wise.

WooHoo just got an email from O2, my new 16 Gb iPhone has been dispatched and will be with me tomorrow.

No more withdrawl symptoms. :D

Dave 16-07-2008 01:14 PM

02 say limited stock available in some stores - not richmond tho

GodstoneEagle 16-07-2008 01:44 PM

how can i connect it to my wifi?

it's security enabled so i'll have to add it to the access list on the router but to do that i need the MAC address of the iPhone
