Yes, i have that problem too. I now have a separate icon shortcut via mobile web next to the app and when this happens just use that link to see notification correctly. The mobile web version i find is a lot better anyhow.

Good tip - thanks. Wonder if they will fix the app. It happens on the iPad too - much annoying.

WhatsApp messenger, currently saving me a fortune while my other half is in Australia. Once you've paid your 59p you can effectively text any other iPhone for free, works exactly like texting in that you get a text like message pop up on your phone and after that it takes you to the conversation with previous messages.

If only I had known about it a little sooner I would have saved about £80 on January's bill :sob:

Have you tried Viber? Its a free app and you can call IPhone to Iphone anywhere in the world for free as long as both IPhones have downloaded the app. This only works over Wi Fi so as long as you both have a Wi Fi connection it means free calls!

What's the best satnav to download to the iPhone?

Or is there a way of using the maps?

Using an iPhone 4.

I use TomTom Western Europe, which is excellent. It doesn't rely upon a WiFi or 3g connection (it has it's own maps - so it's a very big download) and it's not the most expensive. However, at £53 it isn't cheap. Slightly cheaper is the TomTom UK and Ireland - but that's still £50, which is why I went for the Western Europe version.

st albans 08-04-2011 07:11 PM

Doesn't it need 3G to track where you are?

How big is the download size?

I've got about 2.5MB free?

Does Western Europe have updates?

How good is the quality of the Western Europe one in terms of the UK?

The iPhone (and the iPad 3g) uses Assisted GPS. This means that it utilises both the signals from the geostationary satellites as well as information from 3g transmitters locally - which helps the iPhone to 'lock in' accurately and quickly.

However, like most car GPS systems, it works fine without 3g (or WiFi) provided the Application has its own map store. The TomTom does. So you can switch off 3g and wiFi, and it will get you to wherever you need to go, just by using GPS.

The Download size is just under 2 gigs, so you should be OK.

Yes, there are plenty of map updates. This is done without having to re-download the entire programme. Small revisions happen all the time. You can also upload corrections if you find a closed road (for example).

I can't compare to the UK Version, as I have the Western Europe one - but I believe it uses exactly the same maps (but over an extended area).

Edit: I see you said you have 2.5 MB free (not GB), so no - of course you will not have enough space. Sorry!

pauldrulez 08-04-2011 09:07 PM

I meant GB, was rushing the typing ;)

I suspect it may have been mentioned before, but Appshopper.com is a brilliant site to visit if you want to keep up to date with free or discounted iPad and IPhone Applications.

There is an RSS feed you can subscribe to, which delivers news of all App price reductions. Sometimes some very good Apps are discounted (or made available for free) for a temporary period and this is a good way of discovering these.

"Image to Text. Superb OCR software which so far has returned 100% accurate results from newspaper, magazine and other printed media. Neil 21-09-2011 11:10 AM

Just pimping a friend's first game for iPhone. Please give Call Connect a try.

Quote:

Description

Ever dreamed of being a 1950s telephone switchboard operator? The glitz! The glamour! The hairstyles! The never ending stress of handling communication for an entire city!

Dream no longer, for Call Connect is here! Call Connect is a unique, fast-paced switchboard simulation and the first release from Melbourne-based indie developer Walk Through The Clock.

You'll be faced with a daunting wall of sockets and jacks with colour coded rows that represent region codes. Flashing white lights indicate incoming calls; touch and drag a red jack to the incoming call socket and the region light will flash, indicating which colour region to connect the black jack to. Drag the black jack to any free socket in that region to connect the call. When the call is over, both lights flash; tap both to disconnect. That’s Call Connect!

Sound simple? Things get more than a little hectic when you're juggling six or more calls at once! The faster you complete calls, the higher your Efficiency meter and score multiplier will go. Leave callers waiting or connect to the wrong socket and watch your Efficiency needle drop. When the needle hits the bottom of the meter, it’s game over.

Luckily there's also a match-pair bonus mode you can activate when things get tricky. Keep an eye out for the multi-coloured special calls needed to activate the bonus "Test" mode button; once activated, match coloured sockets to boost score and Efficiency.

Call Connect offers frenetic, high scoring gameplay and will challenge your co-ordination skills as you try to keep your board from overloading.

FEATURES:

- Unique, addictive gameplay

- Graphics hand-crafted by a small order of game developing monks

- Music by Melbourne band Star Express

- Local leaderboards

- Hit the Feedback button and email your hopes, dreams (and opinions) directly to us, the developers. We'll be replying to every email we get and your feedback will influence future updates. Don’t hold back, we can take it.

************************************************** ********
What’s new for Version 1.1 update (out soon):
- Game Center support (Leaderboards! Achievements! Bears!* Oh my…)
- Easy Mode: Is CallConnect just a little too much to handle? Fear not budding switchboard operators, there is an Easy Mode incoming. Fewer sockets, gentler difficulty and anything else we can think of to ease you into becoming a Call Connexpert.

*Bears may not be included in update.

Although Taiwan does indeed allow for people to get their money back

Go Taiwan! Lack of a trial period really does suck. When I could be arsed to jailbreak, that was one of the good points. Try something out, then buy it from the app store if it was worth it.

Im fully aware of the exemption you are referring to but I don't see how can it apply to downloaded apps?

(d)for the supply of audio or video recordings or computer software if they are unsealed by the consumer;

Since when have apps been sealed? ;)

Do i just need to plug my current phone into my laptop and let it update/sync or this there anything else i should do?

It doesn't really help at all though. Can you point me towards any source where unsealed is defined as used as I cannot find one.

No, but I found this from a research report prepared for the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills:

Quote:

The regulations contain the only provision in domestic law specifically aimed at digital products. They give the consumer a "cooling off" period in distance contracts during which goods supplied under a distance contract can be returned. However, recognizing that digital products can be perfectly copied without harming the original, the consumer's right to return the product is excluded in the case of digital products.
