It doesn't run in memory and terminates as it per Apple standards when closed so it should be OK. I read somewhere that Jobs doesn't have a problem with VOIP over wifi.

Caught me out too James.

To be honest its a bit of a pain in the arse as you have to either retype the numbers you have in your phone book to adjust. Would like to see a software improvement for this for local calling.

Cant see that changing either.

Voice calling over MSN works to, just freaked out my daughter on the laptop upstairs :D

I love the iPhone - and I probably wouldn't have got one if it hadn't been for the BBS and this thread.

The point is until their is IM that can run in memory it's effectively pointless.

I'm fairly sure that is what apple will hold out for with Ichat, make it the only IM client that runs in memory in the background and they will clean up.

I think you may well be right there for a IM but for VOIP this is the danglies.

But what is the point if people can't skype you unless you are running fring?

I also have an issue with the call quality, the missing contacts in skype and the polling of skype's servers only every ten minutes (the last two are the same issue I guess).

It's a sucky user experience compared to the skype phone

But its the first and accepted by apple too, hopefully that means Skype can't be that far away.

My iPhone broke tonight :sob:

Despite no headphones being anywhere near it it still says they are, quite a common problem apparently but no matter how many times I plug in and unplug the headphones, no joy!!

Back to the Apple shop tomorrow for me.

I'm obviously not being clear, sorry.

Even if there is 100% official Skype client until such times as it can be run in the background it's pretty much useless.

Sorry to hear about your phone :(

No I did get what you meant and I think for a number of people the functionality (ie. memory residence) is critical but for others, like me, its not an issue. I can live with only being 'seen' when I am in the app. For me I prefer it that way to be honest as I find the whole IM thing pretty intrusive so to go online and use it to make a pre-arranged point to point call is fine.

I also completely agree with your other point too, ie. iChat will be the killer app in this space when Apple finally decide to break their own rules.

As for the phone, it has now fixed itself, no idea why but its working again after the 100+ time of plugging the bloody earphones in, it has cleared. I did a full restore too which may have helped. Ironic thing is its the first time I've used the official headphones tonight and after that it broke. Oh well at least it saves me the hassle of having to go near Bluewater (for which I am always grateful :D)

More customising would be nice without the jailbreak.

Anyone know a better online TV guide than this http://www.tvguide.co.uk/iphone/ ?

This article shows that this functionality is in the pipeline but has been delayed...

Top sheet! Thanks fa that! What was that PDA net stuff about? Does it mean you can watch videos on iPhone?

sheriff 06-10-2008 09:55 PM

also, is there any way when updating an app to make it replace the old one automatically?
