That certainly was a big contributor, but political direction was the key.. A distinct policy of relying on the invisible (then very lucrative) industry like finance & banking and not protecting or investing in manufacturing. Frittered away the oil money instead of investing in British industry. The uni milk round was no more after MT came in.

Guess its a wee bit of a moot point, but for me denying the direction we took is re writing history.
