RIP Jimmy Greaves.

Movement on and off the ball in the penalty box was second to none, made scoring goals look easy. His enjoyment playing football was evident to everyone. Impossible to dislike and a marvellous foil to Saint in his later career.

Thanks for the memories Greavsie

How sad, although perhaps a blessing for him after his massive stroke. What a total legend he was and such a character.

Very sad to see this. The finest English striker of his generation. We will never know if he could have won the world cup for England. I think he and Hurst could have. Hunt was the lucky one. Admired him winning his fight with alcoholism. Sadly the pictures of some of his goals do scant justice to how good he was. We do have a memory of what a funny guy he could be as well.

RIP Jimmy, a complete one-off

We ended his Spurs career a 1 0 win for us in the F A Cup and Bill Nicholson dropped him and a few others. Jimmy never played for them again.

He was one of the great goal scorers starting at Chelsea before the move to Italy then joining Spurs and West Ham. The World Cup injury robbed him of the chance to make his name on the World stage.

Great friends with Bobby Moore in 1970 was in the Ford Escort to Mexico race. Saw him at an after dinner speech where he told the story of visiting whilst he was under house arrest. He also hinted that a younger squad player was involved and Bobby was sorting it.

Punditry after football was fun and extended his career.

The battle with alcholism for years which was not unusual for players of that era and he eventually won it.

Great player RIP Condolences to his family and friends.

RIP Jimmy. Just loved him and Ian St John together on the telly. Always laughter with a few odd football clips thrown in.

Such sad news.

RIP Jimmy, my childhood hero. I adored the man.

Was living in Highbury and got into a few scuffles because of this.

I remember I used to stretch my socks so I could get a big turn over just like Jimmy.

Simply the greatest pure scorer in the history of English football, over 400 goals, all in the top division. RIP.

He played in the first match I ever got taken to see - Palace v West Ham in 1970 - and was involved in the opening goal:

Obviously he really made his name with Spurs and also AC Milan - probably unlucky not to be in the England World Cup winning side in 1966 - he actually started his career at Chelsea as a youngster and from reading some of his life story, he actually lived in a flat at the pub at the old the Plough Lane Ground at Wimbledon FC when he was starting out at Chelsea, obviously way back when the Dons were firmly a non-league club.

Hugely talented and the archetypal goal-poacher or fox in the box striker, no doubt he would be sensational in any era - but in his day you had to be able to withstand very physical defending, so would probably be right up there with Messi and Ronaldo in terms of his finishing ability if he was around in the modern era IMO.

Obviously, his battle with drink blighted his reputation at the end of his career - but in reality, one of the greatest forwards of not just his generation but probably all time as far as English League football is concerned.

His TV punditry with Ian St John was a huge feature of following the game on TV in the 1980’s and early 1990s - a great source of fun and possibly part of the spirit of the game we might be missing today, where nobody in the game, big or small, could escape the humour and they were both fine players as having an obvious chemistry together.

Not a really a reflection of his striking ability, but here is a legendary moment from the 1962 England v Brazil World Cup match from 1962 when Jimmy tamed Garrincha’s dog.
