It’s a shame we couldn’t get the deal over the line but I trust that our recruitment team will have alternatives, just as Parish had alternatives for Nuno and Favre, that didn’t turn out too bad!

No idea of the detail, but it’s a story repeated several times. I.e. signed the contract.

Carl has mentioned it numerous times on Twitter. Pretty certain a well known itk journalist has referenced it too but I think I heard that rather than read it.

From Carl’s twit. He was 100% close to joining us, he’d signed the contract!
Went to Fulham instead.

Was a shame when we missed out on Bent but the real killer was Ashton or even (Tim) Cahill. They'd have kept us up, even only one of them. We can now add Bowen, Antonio and Downes to that list, all to the same sodding club!

We did poach Gallagher from Leeds at the last minute though. Jansen opted for us over the wankers.

I can remember Spurs crying that Berbatov was tapped up by the wankers. The wankers crying about Ronaldo going to Madrid. Sometimes you cannot do anything about it, the player will the just choose the bigger team and larger payslip.

Poor form from Downes but it is his boyhood club. Obviously there is no bitterness from my point of view and I hope he goes on to achieve f all in his career now.

People saying that his sudden u-turn is understandable given that he is a West Ham fan are ignoring the fact that it condemns him of a much more heinous crime: supporting West Ham.

I do think we’d have been better for his development than West Ham. Unless he hits the ground running there, he’s not going to start anywhere near as much for them as they are a level above us at present.

I guess only time will tell if it’s a good decision, he’ll be living the dream though for the time being but I expect he’s burnt his bridges with us.

Not sure they needed to bid higher. Just match us to be given permission to talk, and as a lifelong Hammers fan, the whole dynamic of the deal changed.

Having said that, I wouldn’t believe Talksport if they told me my house was burning down.
